Wild Phlox Trail
Just Think Outside
...the place for creativity
Welcome

I've been photographing the wild ponies of Grayson Highlands for seven years and thoroughly enjoy making images of them as well as the beauty of the highlands.

A few years ago I was hiking along the Appalachian Trail on my way to Rhododendron Gap to photograph one of the herds of ponies.  I heard a noise behind me and saw a flash of white through the brush.  I assumed it was ponies heading my way and began to unpack my camera.

Instead of a pony, a very large white Texas Longhorn came jogging down the trail and quickly disappeared around the next bend.  I hadn't had time to get out my camera and thought; no one will believe I saw a Texas Longhorn a mile high in the mountains of southwest Virginia.

See below for the rest of the story.

Take care,

Jeffrey

Ponies and Longhorns, oh my

Last month as I photographed the Massy Gap pony herd I saw movement in the distance on the other side of a wooden fence. I thought that sure looks like a Longhorn. I hiked over to the fence on the Appalachian Trail and was just about to go through a gate in the fence when a massively huge Texas Longhorn came walking down the trail. I had no idea they were that big.

I had my camera ready this time!

Soon more came down the trail including several young calves. It took a few minutes for me to get up enough nerve to go through the gate, but then spent the next hour making images of these beautiful animals.

"Fabio" has been the lead stallion of the Massy Gap herd for as long as I've been photographing them.  This year there is a new leader and he has gone into semi-retirement.  He still spends time helping to guard the herd but takes some time off too.

Catawba on High

The Appalachian Trail runs from the base of this cliff toward the evergreen trees in the distance and then to the right across the mountain bald.   The Massy Gap herd grazes in this area.

The Grayson Highlands are fifteen miles north of Jefferson, NC and seven miles from the border of Tennessee.
