...the place for creativity
Welcome

Greetings!

I was in South Carolina to make images of The Cistern at the College of Charleston.

On the way to Charleston I visited the Congaree National Park near Columbia.  The park is fascinating, especially the Cyprus trees and knees, and I photographed along the elevated boardwalk over the swamp and around the 4.4 mile Weston Lake Loop Trail.

While in Charleston I made images at the Magnolia Plantation.  The gardens were filled wth blooming Azalea and Camilla.  The mix of live oak, Spanish moss and blooming flowers was stunning.  This is one of the most beautiful places I've photographed and I highly recommend visiting here.  I planned to photograph the gardens my first morning in Charleston.  After seeing this amazing place I made more images that evening and again the following morning.

In June I will be teaching my photography workshop titled "Visual Storytelling".  The workshop will be held on June 1st and repeated on June 8th.  Each workshop will be limited to eight participants to allow me time to work closely with each photographer.  More information on the workshop is below.

Take care,

Jeffrey

Visual Storytelling Photography Workshop

Star Trails Gallery Downtown - Kingsport TN

I will will be holding a Visual Storytelling Workshop at Star Trails Downtown Gallery in Kingsport TN on June 1st and again on June 8th from 10AM until 5PM.

The creation of nature and landscape images that draw the viewer into the image is a deliberate process that combines the use of light, elements of design, and camera settings.

This workshop begins in the classroom with a review of each of these elements and how to use them to improve your photography.  Following a 45-minute lunch break (packing your lunch is recommended) we then move outside to practice applying what was learned in class.  The workshop concludes back in the classroom with a review of these techniques and the opportunity to critique the images you made.

The class size will be limited to eight to allow time to work individually with each participant.  The cost of the workshop is $125.  Contact Rob Beverly at Star Trails Downtown to reserve your place in the workshop.

Photography Workshop - Virginia Highlands Festival - Abingdon VA

August 10, 2013 1pm-3pm

I will be presenting "The Fine Art of Photography" at the fesitival as well as judging the festival's photography contest on August 1st.

The first photograph was made in 1826 and for the next three decades cameras were primarily used as a recording device.   In the 1850s photographers began experimenting with their cameras and darkrooms to produce prints that were art and the images they produced with their rudimentary equipment were amazing.

Beginning in the 1890 photographer, publisher and gallery owner Alfred Stieglitz set out to prove that photography was a medium as capable of artist expression as painting or sculpture.   The acceptance of photography as a fine art is due to the lifelong efforts of Stieglitz and those visionaries that followed him.

The presentation will showcase the fascinating progression of the art of photography and tips and techniques that you can use to improve your own photography.

Exploring The Roan - Exhibition and Artist Talk - Johnson City TN

Exhibition - September 4th - 30th

Reception - September 6th - 6pm to 8pm

Artist Talk - September 10th  - 6pm

This exhibition at the gallery of the Johnson City Area Arts Council will feature my images from the Roan Mountain Highlands.  The Highlands are a unique area to explore and photograph.  The Highlands have harsh snowy winters, acres of Catawba Rhododendron in spring, and the opportunity to hike the Appalachian Trail in August while enjoying the blueberries along the trail.  And of course the angora goats that graze the Highlands in the summer as part of the Baatany Goat Project.

The Meaning in Trees - Portfolio

The Meaning in Trees is a new 44-page portfolio of my favorite tree images.

I was eight years old when I first had the desire to make an image. Walking outside after an overnight ice storm, I was mesmerized by an ice-covered tree glistening in the morning sun. I desperately wanted a camera to make that image.

My ongoing fascination with trees inspired me to make this special portfolio of my favorite tree images from the Mountain South to the Sea.

The Meaning in Trees may be purchased in print or as a digital download from my publisherAutographed copies are available through my website
