Just Think Outside
...the place for creativity
Welcome

Greetings!

Snow has been scarce in northeast Tennessee in 2013.  However, that may change tomorrow.  A winter storm warning has been issued for a significant snow accumulation in the mountains on the border of Tennessee and North Carolina.

My camera batteries are charged, backpack loaded, and snowshoes waiting by the garage door.

The images below are from past winters though they have just been added to my website for the first time.  The first set shows my favorite winter tree in the midst of frozen fog.  In the second set the sun broke through the clouds after the storm and is highlighting the landscape, but only in the middle of the scene.

Both sets show a snowy landscape but the shades of white from one to the other are quite different.

Take care,

Jeffrey

Winter's Magic

Nature chose for a tool, not the earthquake or lightning to rend and split asunder, not the stormy torrent or eroding rain, but the tender snow-flowers noiselessly falling through unnumbered centuries.

Shades of White

I was making my way along the Appalachian Trail near Whitetop Mountain in southwest Virginia when I first spotted the large tree on the left.   I looked at how far away it was, thought about how deep the snow would be and decided it would be worth it even if I did sink up to my waist in snowdrifts.  It was.

The ice and snow stopped falling so I ventured out with my camera.  I had only driven a few minutes when I spotted this scene.  As I began making images sunlight appeared through a small break in the clouds.

The Meaning in Trees - Portfolio

The Meaning in Trees is a new 44-page portfolio of my favorite tree images.

I was eight years old when I first had the desire to make an image. Walking outside after an overnight ice storm, I was mesmerized by an ice-covered tree glistening in the morning sun. I desperately wanted a camera to make that image.

My ongoing fascination with trees inspired me to make this special portfolio of my favorite tree images from the Mountain South to the Sea.

The Meaning in Trees may be purchased in print or as a digital download from my publisherAutographed copies are available through my website
