Greetings!
January has flown by and February will end soon. Please begin to gather your tax information in preparation for April. Earlier this month I sent an email with tax reminders and current facts for your perusal. You will find that same material in a link under the "Client Alerts" section of this newsletter. If you have any specific questions or concerns, please call our office for an appointment to talk to me. You already know that February brings us Valentine's Day and President's Day. Add the following to your store of February knowledge:
- February is the only month that can pass without a full moon. This last happened in 1999 and will next happen in 2018.
- On February 16, 1968, the nation's first 911 system went into effect.
- On February 27, 1922, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, guaranteeing women the right to vote.
Sincerely,
Melissa J. Stein

Yes, These Are Real Tax Terms! Tax Drag
Amount by which total income on an investment is reduced due to taxes. Calculating tax drag is important for evaluating tax-sheltered vs. non-tax-sheltered investment vehicles or strategies, and is important as well for wealth management or estate planning.
Kiddie Tax
A colloquial term for the tax levied against individuals under the age of 17 whose income is greater than a pre-specified amount. Income above this level is subject to the parents' or guardians' tax rate. Established in 1986, this prevents parents or guardians from giving expensive "gifts" to their children in order to avoid paying higher taxes.

OPTIMISM? PESSIMISM? By: James Swanson, CFA
MFS Chief Investment Strategist
QUICK POINTS Bias and opinion should not drive action.
Keep an open mind, and be optimistic if the facts warrant optimism. The fact-driven investor sees a market correction as a potential buying opportunity.
Bullish or bearish?
Market strategists are often put into one of two camps: perma-bears, who deliver a steady message of doom, such as "prepare for the imminent collapse," or perma-bulls, who always see the rosy side.

Cloudy...With a Forecast of More Clouds!
Or as Judy Garland said, "Behind every cloud is another cloud."
You have probably heard of Sony Pictures animated hit comedy, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, the film (inspired by a beloved children's book) that focuses on a town where food falls from the sky like rain. You have also probably been hearing about the "Cloud" and "Cloud Computing" in conversations at work or with friends, or on television reports. What on earth (or in the sky) is "Cloud Computing? What does it mean when people say that the information is "in the Cloud"? Click here for the full article.
