Greetings!

I  hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and I wish you Happy Holidays as you celebrate Christmas, or Hanukkah and  a Happy New Year for the beginning of 2014. Best wishes to you and yours from me, my family and the staff at Stein Wealth Advisors.

As you wind down your 2013, I hope that this newsletter's expanded end-of-the-year client  alerts and tips section and  useful attachments will serve you well. Please call me if you have any specific questions, or want clarification.

As the new year approaches, I leave you with two quotes, one poetic and one humorous:

For last year's words belong to last year's language
And next year's words await another voice.
And to make an end is to make a beginning.
~T.S. Eliot, "Four Quartets"

RETIREMENT PLANS
Many qualified retirement plan contributions have to be made before 12/31/13.  This would include 401(k)'s, 457, 403(b)'s and other plans.

RMD's
(Required Minimum Distributions) - If you are over the age of 70 the IRS requires that you take money out of certain retirement plans before the end of the year

1099's
Pershing generally does not mail 1099's until February 15th each year.  They will be available online via NetxClient by that date. Please note that you may NOT receive a 1099 in the mail if you have opted for ALL paperless statements.

Tax Deductible Fees
Many financial planning and advisory fees OUTSIDE of retirement accounts may be tax deductible.  Please consult with your tax advisor and feel free to call us with questions about those fees.  They can be found on year end statements, on NetxClient under "history" as well as the "transaction" report in Albridge.

COLA Increase
Beginning in January 2014, the Social Security COLA (cost of living allowance) will go up 1.5 %.  Example: those receiving an average benefit of $1,272, the increase will be $19 per month.  Plan now how to spend this bonus!

IRS: Shutdown will delay tax filing season

It is important for everyone to be aware that while the April 15, 2014 filing deadline is still in place and companies must still send W-2 and other tax forms on schedule, the IRS will be delayed in processing tax returns because of the recent government shutdown; tax refunds for early filers may be delayed.  For more in depth information:

PNC's Cost for True Love

A client of Stein Wealth Advisors' sent an email to Melissa Stein highlighting the 2013 PNC Christmas Price Index.  This release marked its 30th year and shows the index up 7.7 % for 2013. This annual index is calculated by PNC Wealth Management, Pittsburgh, PA.  A price index measures price changes through a representative group of individual items. The PNC Christmas Price Index is an index of the costs of the goods and services given by "my true love" as listed day by day in the classic holiday song The Twelve Days of Christmas. The PNC Christmas Price Index amazingly reflects changes in the economy in the same way the Consumer Price Index issued by the US Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics does.

Since its inception at a PNC predecessor bank in Philadelphia, the Christmas Price Index has  become an annual holiday tradition which has had a good record in corresponding to national inflation rates. "While there are exceptions in given years, what's most interesting about the index's history is that since the beginning, year-over-year increases have averaged 2.9 percent, which is exactly the same number as the U.S. inflation index," Jim Dunigan, managing executive, Investments of PNC Wealth Management, said.

Melissa Stein's client said, "I've been following the PNC Christmas Price Index for several years. This year's 7.7% increase over last year is right in line with general economic conditions. Notice how the gifts requiring professional skills are an order of magnitude more expensive!  Eight Maids-a-Milking are only $58 - real cheap labor.  A Partridge is cheap but Swans are expensive. On the second day of Christmas, the first day's gift is given again.  Then on the third day of Christmas, both [the] first and second day's gifts are repeated, and so on.  In fact, by the time you reach the twelfth day, a Partridge in a Pear Tree has been given 11 [more] times.  Listen to the song and do the math."

Not Your Usual New Year's Resolutions!

As the New Year begins, thoughts turn to the traditional pledging of "New Year's Resolutions", those changes in our lives that we would like to make - or that our friends and family think we should make :-).   Read on for five ideas for resolutions that are not that hard to keep and that will pay large dividends in your life.

Number 1.  Speaking of dividends: Pay yourself $3 dollars every time you pass up a sugar-laden dessert or high calorie snack.  The psychological reward will begin to grow the more you do this and soon will be as "sweet" as the edible treat itself.   Put actual cash in a jar or keep a careful record.  Even if you only do this once a week, you will have over $150.00 at the end of the year and may lose a few pounds along the way.
Number 2.
Learn 24 new vocabulary words - 2 a month for the 12 months of 2014.  Choose your own words from a dictionary or click on the following link for 24 words that may be new to you.  (Even if you already know the meaning, endeavor to use the word that month.)  Click here for the vocabulary list.
Number 3. Buy a packet of pretty post cards and send a monthly postcard to a faraway friend. Your monthly message can be a poem, a joke, a quote or just a remembrance of a time shared together.
Number 4. Give one of the most precious things you can give - time. Volunteer, just once a month if your life is already full with family and a job. Check out your local humane society, your church, a nursing home or favorite charity for opportunities.
Number 5. Do at least one thing in 2014 that you have been thinking about doing, but have been afraid to try. Decide to absolutely do it in 2014.

Happy New Year!
