Taxes, the economy, and the construction employment   

 

 

Legislative battle averted. Thanks to the Texas Building Branch, the controversial, high-profile margins tax issue with the State Comptroller's office has been resolved. The anticipated rule was posted in the Texas Registry and allows the construction industry to handle the "cost of goods sold" tax deduction in accordance with state statute. Attention turns to breach of contract and school background check legislation.

The Texas unemployment rate has been at or below the national rate for 73 consecutive months. Also,Texas state sales tax receipts for February 2013 were 3.7 percent higher than for February 2012. And construction income grew 11.6 percent in Texas during 2012, compared with 5.4 percent nationwide.

Nationally, construction employment increased in 145 out of 339 metropolitan areas between January 2012 and January 2013, declined in 141, and was stagnant in 53. With three percent growth, the San Antonio area ranked 109th.
