Sign Board Responsibility Change
|
After four years on the job, as Signboard Lady, Margie Blake is turning over the keyboard to Jyothi Shroff who will assume responsibility of the electronic signboard and all its requests. Last month, Margie was named president of the HOA, so the Communications Committee reassigned her previous signboard duties to Jyothi who also serves on the Committee. Effective March 1, all sign requests should be directed to Jyothi Shroff at dccoasignboard@gmail.comThanks to Margie for her years of service and congratulations to Jyothi for volunteering to take on this role. Both Margie and Jyothi are veteran residents of this community; we are blessed to have these ladies who have stepped up to the plate in their new roles this year.

Where Everybody Knows Your Name
|

by Mike Milkey
Thirty two years ago America was introduced to an outrageously funny television comedy series call "Cheers". Millions of TV viewers faithfully tuned in each week to laugh at the episode. We could hardly wait to see what events would shape the lives of the "Cheers" employees and patrons. We wanted questions answered such as, "would Sam ever marry Diane?" or what silly statement would come out of Cliff's mouth next. When my wife Barbara and I started dating, she lived in Boston, and we made it a point to have a drink in the real Cheers bar on our first date. The real Cheers did resemble the TV series, however it just wasn't the same. We didn't know anyone.
The TV series had a catchy tune with lyrics that most can sing today: "Sometimes you want to goWhere everybody knows your name, And they're always glad you came; You want to be where you can see,Our troubles are all the same; You want to be where everybody knows your name."Where everybody knows your name. WOW. How much fun would it be if that place existed in real life? Well, twenty-five years ago Barbara and I found such a place right here in our community. You know it as the Deercreek Country Club's 19th hole. I'm the first to admit that they don't have a Sam, Diane, Carla, Cliff or Norm. However, they do have a Nicola and a Nick and a Jacob and a Julie. And we have wonderful patrons like Bubba and Mike and Jan and Barbara. The characters in our bar are real which makes the whole thing so entertaining and heart- warming. We have so much fun on Friday nights we look forward to it all week. It's our opportunity to catch up with our friends and share stories. The Club has become a place where everyone knows our name. It's also a place where everyone will know your name if you give it a chance. Never been to the Club on Friday night? I'll make it easy, let's sit together this week and have a drink. I will be more than happy to introduce you to the many characters in our "Creek" bar.

Garages - Cars or Clutter?
|
By Bob Kichler - Access Control Liaison
Our community is now over 20 years old. Many of us relocated from other parts of the country - bringing with us boxes of memories as well as grandma's dishes and old couches. Our own parents pass away and we bring over their stuff thinking it will re-purposed. We redecorate and while that recliner or chaise may be out of fashion, - it would be perfect for our sons or daughters in their first apartments or at college. However, our Florida homes have no basements, so we conveniently store them on shelves and in our garages pushing our cars into the driveways!
Are you aware that when you chose to live in Deercreek that you agreed to abide by the CC&R's of the community? One of those CC&R's (Section 4 of Article V-Architectural Control for those who want to check it out) states that "automobiles shall be stored in garages when not in use. No garage shall be converted to living space..." etc. More and more residents are using their garages as storage units while parking their cars on the driveways... this is not permitted as the garage must first be used for your cars! I know of at least 4 garages between my house and the gate (it was five until a few weeks ago) that only use their garages for storage while parking multiple cars outside overnight! This is unsightly and brings down the appearance and value of our homes that we should all strive to maintain.
Before you over-react, we are NOT talking about the family of 4 or 5 who parks two or three cars in the garage and then have their excess teenager cars in the driveway. This is perfectly allowed. We are talking about residents who for example, store furniture, business inventory, use their garages for ping-pong or pool tables and then park their cars outside at night!
If this is you, be a good neighbor and clean out your garage or rent a storage unit if necessary; but brings those cars inside at night!
Why do we leave cars worth thousands of dollars in our driveways and put our useless junk in the garage?

By Jim Lowell - Covenant Enforcement Liaison Nobody likes to get a ticket for a moving violation. And sometimes, we even feel the ticket was not warranted. So we refuse to sign the ticket when it is given to us by one of the members of our security unit. This failure to sign seems to be based on the idea that signing the ticket is an admission of guilt. It's not.
Signing the ticket only means that you acknowledge the fact that you received it. If you feel you were issued a ticket wrongfully, you can submit an appeal to the Deercreek Covenants Enforcement Committee (CEC). This can be done in writing or by a personal appearance at a monthly CEC meeting. The appeal procedure is simple. If you want to appeal in writing, send a letter and a copy of the ticket to: May Management Services, Inc. ATTN: Cathy Cox 240 Canal Blvd, Ste. 3 Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, 32082
If you want to appeal in person, send an email to the CEC Chair, Dudley Mendheim (dudleym2@comcast.net), and include a photo or scanned copy of the ticket. Also, let him know when you'd like to appear. The CEC meets on the third Thursday of each month at the Deercreek Country Club (in the Ladies' Card Room); meetings begin at 6:15pm.
Of course, it's always best to avoid the need to receive a ticket: the speed limit throughout Deercreek is 30MPH and the STOP signs mean what they say.
Thank you for you for your cooperation.

Architectural Review Board

By Martha Jaramillo Now that the first official frost is no longer a threat and spring is here, many homeowners may want to run out and start gardening. Spring landscaping, and increasing your curb appeal is on most people's minds at this moment. Considering that, let us just remind you of some of the Community's requirements... - Removing and replacing dead shrubs and flowers for "like-kind" does not require ARB approval; however, you do need to replace the plant material removed.
- Removing existing plant beds or installing new plant beds of greater than 100 square feet, requires the submission of a landscape plan with plant list for approval by the ARB.
- All plant and ground cover selections require ARB approval.
- Grass (ground cover) substitutes in the front and side yards shall be sod, not springs.
- Grass substitutes shall be separated from the neighboring properties by a landscape bed or other suitable barrier to prevent encroachment.
- Approved non-plant mulch materials are the following:
- a. ˝" to 1 ˝" rock in grays, tans and browns may be used in plant beds in lieu of mulch.
- b. Lava rock (red or black) may be used in plant beds in lieu of mulch.
- c. Rubber mulch in earth tones (not green or blue) may be used in plant beds in lieu of mulch.
- The use of white rock is not allowed.
- Landscape curbing requires approval by the ARB.
- Landscape ornaments (statues, fountains, birdbaths and other yard ornaments) should blend into and be an integral part of the home's overall landscaping. They should not be of a size, color, number, or be so prominently displayed, as to detract from the whole of the individual home or of the community.
Submittal requirements and ARB Review Applications may be found on the community website at www.deercreek.com/arbIf you have questions regarding ARB, please call Martha at (904) 273-9832 ext. 131
