Top 5 Things to Know About Trash/Recycle Pickup
1. Use only COJ issued containers.
Place containers at the curb with handles placed on house side not street side.
2. Place Trash containers away from Recycle container (not side by side); locate each at either end of driveway.
3. Automated arms on trucks cannot pick up when two containers are placed side by side.
4. All trash and recycle items must be inside the containers. Nothing will be picked up if left outside the container.
5. Any issues with container or service - please contact COJ 630-CITY.

Literary Circle By Pat Gross
Amanda Kieck will be hosting September's Deercreek Literary Circle meeting. The popular, award winning novel, The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt, will be discussed.
This cleverly crafted book is about a 13-year-old boy named Theo who survives an accident that kills his mother. Theo is abandoned by his father but is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Unsettled by his strange new home in New York and tormented by his longing for his mother, he clings to the one thing that reminds him of her: a small painting that draws Theo, as an adult, into the underworld of art.
The Goldfinch is an old-fashioned story of loss and obsession, survival and self-invention, and the fickle fingers of fate.

Are you looking for a way to add value to your home? An updated kitchen is one way. Bill and Carney Kirtley on Hampton Lake Lane recently renovated their kitchen to incorporate some of the latest trends. One of the easiest ways to change the look of a kitchen is to change the countertops. Kitchens in Deercreek often boast granite countertops, but the Kirtleys chose a rich marble instead. The material of the countertop can dramatically change the look of a kitchen, but the style can as well. Here, the Kirtleys replaced the raised top countertop with a California countertop where everything is on the same level. The California countertop has two advantages: visually, it opens up the kitchen; and functionally, there is a wider surface for food prep or serving.
Cabinets also play a huge role in any kitchen. Newer trends include contrasting cabinets, as seen in the dark cabinets of the island and the front of the cabinets facing the family room. When updating the cabinets in a kitchen, multiple options exist - new cabinets, replace the doors, painting or staining, or simply, install new hardware. The Kirtleys chose to stay with the existing cabinets, but added new doors. Additionally, a cabinet which blocked access to the wet bar from the kitchen was removed. Now with the improved traffic flow in and out of the kitchen, the Kirtleys can easily get to the wet bar to serve guests a cocktail.
Kitchens are the center of activity in a home. Make your kitchen beautiful and functional for your enjoyment, and the updates may increase the value of your home as well.

The View
September 2014By Rita Allen and Connie Davis
9907 Vineyard Lake Lane Jeff and Donna Bernard
The front of the home of Jeff and Donna Bernard features impressively styled ligustrum trees standing among well trimmed foundation plantings of shillings, hollies, viiburnum, and more ligustrums. Near the front door purple lantana and yellow carolina Jessamine offer spots of color while a pygmy palm nestles in one corner. Two watermelon pink crepe myrtles frame the other corner on the right.
On the left side of the home, stately oak trees provide shade for an expansive, perfectly manicured lawn that is sure to be the envy of any gardener struggling to maintain healthy grass in a Florida climate. Except for the addition of a large topiary of eugenia, the choices of the trees and shrubbery on this side mirror the crepe myrtles, hollies, viiburnum, and shaped ligustrums of the front. This continuity of plantings provides a well-balanced, serene, and welcoming landscape to our community.

Redesign - Creatively Repurposed Tuesday September 23, 10:00am
By Patty Tomka
Have you ever looked at a room in your house and thought "I have no idea how to make this look like the pictures in the magazines, I'd rather burn it all and start again?!" Well put away the matches because we have a solution that won't even involve a second mortgage. Barbara Greene, [IRIS, ADE, RESA] will show us how to rejuvenate, repurpose and redesign our homes using our own things. Her company "Redesign Today' offers many options to your decorating dilemmas. "Professional Interior Redesigners give homeowners a fresh new look without buying anything new by simply rearranging existing furniture, artwork and accessories in just a few hours." During a one-day makeover, her Interior Redesigners will 'go shopping' in your home and see a different use for many of the items you have overlooked for years. Furniture might be put on a diagonal, an old backgammon board might be hung on the wall as artwork or used as a drink tray or placed on the hearth as a background for a vase full of antique knitting needles! Walls don't need to be adorned with fine art. Do you have some crocheted doilies that your favorite Grandma made but are stuck in a closet? Frame them and make a grouping. Add some small mirrors or architectural pieces to fill out the grouping. A one day redesign will make a world of difference.
They also do 'Home Staging' before you put your house on the market. We have all seen the fabulous looks of the staged homes on TV but they come at a price! Barbara uses things you already own to get the same effect. She also does 'Relocation Staging' as you are moving in so that the pieces from the old house can fit into the new house seamlessly. Are you having a big Holiday Party and are overwhelmed with all the details? Let Barbara's crew come and look over your stash of decorations and decide how best to use them. They have also been known to 'Switch Rooms' by using the spaces more creatively. Just because the builder said it was a dining room doesn't mean that it couldn't be better used as a library or an office. Their newest service involves 'Kitchen and Bathroom Design' where they take you from concept to completion, guiding you through the process and dealing with scheduling of supplies and sub-contractors until you have your new, beautiful space.
And if you are so intrigued by the Redesign concept that you want to do it yourself, Barbara teaches 5 day ADE Approved Certification Courses in Interior Redesign and Home Staging. Come to our September 23 meeting and hear about all the different aspects of her creative business or check out her website: www.redesign-today.com or www.redesign-training.com Barbara has a wealth of information and you can't help but be energized by her enthusiasm. She has appeared on WJXT, The Morning Show and loves being an IRIS instructor, showing others how to 'rejuvenate, repurpose and redesign'.
If you are interested in joining the Home and Garden Club please call Anne Klueppel at 519-5368 or Lee Ann Phillips at 519-6931. They will be glad to tell you about us. If you would like to stay and have lunch together, you can place your order before the meeting and it will be ready when we adjourn. This is a great way to meet new friends and spend time with old friends.

Spotlight on Charity: Ronald McDonald House
by Paige Yauger
It's not too early to start thinking about Halloween costumes! We had such a phenomenal success last year with our Halloween costume drive for the Ronald McDonald House - we are doing it again this October. The children were SO excited to have brand new Halloween costumes of their own, and it certainly made a difference distracting them from the difficult times they are experiencing.
The Deercreek Women's Alliance has supported the local Ronald McDonald House for many years and it is a charity near and dear to our hearts. This organization supports the health and well-being of children by providing lodging and other services for critically ill, chronically ill and seriously injured children and their families. The 30-bedroom facility across from Nemours, offers lodging and other support services for families with ill and injured children being treated in Jacksonville. Since 1988 the House has served more than 32,500 families. The average family stays at the Jacksonville Ronald McDonald House for 7 days, but many families stay for several weeks or even months at a time, while their child receives treatment. When families stay for extended periods, they will often spend a family birthday or a holiday at the House. In an effort to provide a true "home away from home" these occasions are celebrated. You can help us make these special memories! This year the DWA will donate $1000 to RMHC Jacksonville towards purchasing new blankets for the facility and also to provide a number of backpacks and school supplies for the children residing in the house. We are collecting new, unopened Halloween costumes between October 1 and 14th, 2014 (sorry, due to the health of the children used costumes are not accepted). Suggested sizes are anywhere from toddler to young 'tweens with Halloween accessories being the most preferred items (i.e.: animal ears and tails and hats). The DWA will host a Halloween party for the children on Halloween at the RMH- Friday October 31st. We'll be handing out candy and playing games with the children. (Time TBA). If you're interested in participating in this worthwhile event - please contact Paige Yauger: 363-2809.
So remember - as you are shopping, please consider picking up a small item that could be utilized by the RMHC for Halloween and drop it in the marked bin at the guard gate or at Paige Yauger's house: 9928 Blakeford Mill Road - October 1-14th.
Your support of RMHC Jacksonville means so much to the families served. Thank you!

How to be a Thoughtful Neighbor
Tips for being a thoughtful neighbor:
1. Clean up after your pets: This is an issue that has turned neighbors against each other in more communities than you can imagine. Common courtesy (and basic health concerns) require that you pick up after your pet when walking them in our beautiful neighborhood. Did you know that when you pick up after your pet you should return their "business" to YOUR home's garbage can? Disposing of your pet's "business" in any other way is not only rude, it's gross! Not picking up after your pet is also a fineable offense in Duval County. Also, please remember that your pet must be on a leash at all times when taken beyond your property.
2. Respect your neighbor's property: Most homeowners in Deercreek utilize several types of vendors to service their properties. Please be courteous and remind your vendors to respect your neighbor's space. This includes: not blowing grass clippings and other landscape debris in your neighbor's yard, not cutting through your neighbor's yard as a shortcut, and reminding vendors to stay on your property.
3. Obey the speed limit: The speed limit within Deercreek is 30 MPH and is enforced by the Deercreek Security Staff. Please be cognizant of your speed when traveling through Deercreek, as there are pedestrians, children, pets, golf carts, etc. Your cooperation and participation is key to ensuring the safety and peace of mind of every family!
4. Parking: Please remember to park in your garage and/or driveway as much as possible. Overnight street parking between 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. is prohibited; however, if you must park on the street for a short amount of time, please be sure to not block your neighbor's driveway.
