Flag Project

American Flag The Jacksonville Exchange Club will once again offer Deercreek residents the opportunity to participate in our 2014 Flag Project.   Partiicpating residents can choose to have the Exchange Club place a US Flag in their yards on the Memorial Day, Independence Day, and/or Veterans Day holidays.    These flags are approximately 3 foot x 4 foot in size, and are mounted on 5 foot poles.    Exchange Club members will place the flag in your yard a day or two before each holiday, and will remove the flags a day or two following each holiday.

The National Exchange Club is one of America's oldest service organizations.   The local Jacksonville Exchange Club was founded in 1923, and engages in community service projects that foster Americanism and serve the youth of our community.  All monies raised by our Flag Project are used to support the Exchange Club Family Center of Jacksonville, a local organization working to prevent child abuse.   We ask for a $25 donation per holiday to participate.

A Widow for One Year

Widow for One Year

by John Irving

Ruth Cole is a complex, often self-contradictory character--a "difficult" woman. By no means is she conventionally "nice," but she will never be forgotten. - Ruth's story is told in three parts, each focusing on a crucial time in her life.

Richly comic, as well as deeply disturbing A Widow for One Year is a multi-layered love story of astonishing emotional force. Both ribald and erotic, it is also a brilliant novel about the passage of time and the relentlessness of grief.

Real Estate Talk

BJWhat is it about Deercreek that makes it so appealing to people?
Is it the location - convenient access to the beach, shopping and major roads?  Is it the feeling of community once you pass through the gates at the entrance?  Maybe it is both, plus the fact that living in Deercreek is a great value.

The real estate market has seen its share of struggles in the last few years and Deercreek has struggled along with the rest of the country.  Over the past 12 months from 4/11/13 - 4/11/14, 37 homes have sold in Deercreek ranging in price from $207,500 to $645,000, according to the NEFAR MLS.  This represents an average of just over 3 homes per month sold and closed.  The Sold Price per Approximate Heated Square Foot was a low of $97.38 to a high of $158.90.  The Days on the Market for properties sold ranged from 3 days to 539 days.  Deercreek has seen a number of foreclosures and short sales that has depressed the sales prices and extended the days on the market.  With the majority of these now sold, the Deercreek market has seen improvement.
The last three months from 1/11/14-4/11/14 shows 5 homes have sold ranging in price from $313,425 to $645,000 and were on the market from 5 days to 157 days.  The sold price per approximate heated square foot over the past 3 months ranges from $131.20 to $140.14.  Sellers are now getting anywhere from 92% to 104% of listing price, whereas over the past 12 month period, it ranged from 85% to 105%.

Four homes are currently under contract and pending closing.  We will have to see how their sales prices impact the Deercreek market once they are closed.  For now, things are looking up!
USTA National Tennis Championships

USTA
USTA In early April, eight ladies from our Deercreek tennis team travelled to Surprise, Arizona to represent Florida and compete in the USTA 55+ Women's 6.0 2014 National Tennis Championships.

"Though we did not advance to the finals," says team captain, Janet Daechsel, "we were certainly competitive, winning 5 of our 9 matches. Three of our 4 losses came down to nail-biting 3rd set tiebreak." Our Lucky In Love Aztec tennis skirts were a big hit. We received so many compliments we gave ourselves an unofficial "best dressed" award!

What an awesome adventure and great experience that we hope to be fortunate enough to have again in the years to come. In the meantime we have lots of fond memories from our experience on the big tennis stage. It was truly an honor to represent the state of Florida and Deercreek!

We are very appreciative of the coaching and support we received from Mike Hatfield, Deercreek Head Tennis Professional. Not only did Mike come to Arizona to cheer us on, he provided us with numerous clinics this past winter to make sure we were well prepared to compete on the hard courts of Arizona.

Team members: Jyothi Berman, Janet Daechsel (captain), Dena Grossman, Bonnie King, Marianne Koo, Vicki McLenahan, Linda Proudfoot, Paige Yauger

Congratulations to Bill Ireland and Lee Kermode from Deercreek who are also travelling to Surprise, Arizona in April to compete in the 9.0 Men's National Championships. Likewise, good luck to the Deercreek 55+ Women's 3.5 2014 USTA Team that is competing at the 2014 state of Florida Championships in early May in Daytona. Go Deercreek!

"It All Begins in Your Closet" with Audrey Burris

We will wrap up our year with a very full program on May 27 beginning with eating lunch together and ending with a program on fashion faux pas.  Please RSVP to Mary Louise Selzer 363-1618 or mlsezer@comcast.net

This is an important meeting as we thank the outgoing Board Members and welcome the incoming Board. These ladies have worked long and hard to make the Home and Garden Club run smoothly, provide entertaining and informative programs each month and manage our resources wisely so that we can help keep Deercreek beautiful. Please make an effort to come and let them know that you appreciate their time and energy and creativity. Did you know that there are 29 ladies on this year's Board??? Each has a piece of the complex puzzle that makes the year so interesting. Each has different talents and abilities that they generously share - and this makes the work load lighter for all. In this age of the "Me First" mentality it is wonderful to see so many women giving their time freely and harkening back to the old "Quilting Circle" mentality where the neighbors supported each other and chatted happily while they worked together. For a look at some of the things we've done this year, go to our photo albums on the Deercreek web site www.DeercreekCC.com and click on the Garden Club.

After the new Board is firmly in place we will have a presentation by Audrey Burris, helping us figure out what to wear, what not to wear and how to make the clothes in our closets make us look good instead of just making us crazy. Bring in one of your "Fashion Faux Pas" to share. You know you have one! We all do!
Fashion Faux Pas
Audrey has 35 years of experience working in women's retail and has owned her own business "Wardrobing by Audrey" for five years. Each of us has a style and color that suits us, but so many of us don't know what it is or how to achieve the look we want.  Having someone look at the overall picture - instead of our lumps and bumps - can be a wonderful help and make is easier to choose the perfect pieces from the millions of options out there. Audrey reaches many bewildered women when she is a guest speaker at programs or wardrobe events. But she can also guide you individually as a personal shopper or come to your home for closet inventory and customization. Come for a quick tip or look into a whole wardrobe makeover.

If you have questions please contact Anne Klueppel at 519-5368 or Lee Ann Phillips at 519-6931 - our Membership Chairs. We'll have another newsletter article telling you what is going on in August. Come and join us!

DWA Spotlight on Charity: Gabriel House of Care
By: Natalie Jackson

Gabriel House of Care The Gabriel House of Care is an affordable extended-stay hospital hospitality house for caregivers and cancer and organ transplant patients receiving medical care away from home. Operated by the nonprofit St. Andrew's Lighthouse, Inc., and located on the Mayo Clinic Florida campus in Jacksonville, Gabriel House of Care offers comfort and peace of mind to families requiring long-term medical care away from home. The Gabriel House of Care provides a very cozy home atmosphere with a library, fireplace and an inviting dining area.

Every day in the United States, thousands of people wait for life-saving organs and bone marrow transplants and thousands more seek treatments for cancer-related illnesses. Far from home for weeks or even months, the emotional and financial burdens can be overwhelming.  The staff, volunteers and other patients and caregivers at the Gabriel House of Care are there to provide friendship, compassion and support during difficult times.

The DWA will be hosting a Gabriel House of Care Wish List Drive in the future.  Items on their wish list include: kitchen towels, dish cloths, bathroom tissue, paper towels, Clorox wipes, trash bags, Kleenex tissues, small boxes of cereal, granola bars, small bags of snacks, canned soup, canned vegetables, pasta and sauce

For more information about this charity, please contact the DWA Gabriel House of Care Chairperson, Jan Malick, at 519-5013.
Bling Your Yard
Adding color to your Florida lanscape

By: Peter Davis

Flower Beds Florida is a tropical (south) or subtropical (central and north) climate zone, right? So why the lack of color in so many yards? For larger subdivisions like Deercreek the answer is home builders. Home builders typically put in low maintenance shrubs and azaleas (As a side note, azaleas should not be turned into hedges but that's for another article). The only color variation would be from foliage and when the azaleas bloom briefly in mid March.

So where do you begin if you'd like to add more color? It depends. What's your budget? How much time or dollars do you want to spend in the yard? If low on both counts then keep the low maintenance plants you currently have.

If you'd like to do some minor improvements, adding some pizazz consider purchasing some annuals. What annuals are best for Florida yards? Deer resistant and drought/heat tolerant ones to be sure. That narrows the list down considerably. These would include verbena, marigolds (though deer ate mine; guess they were either starving or lazy), dusty miller, Mexican heather, dianthus, rosemary, sages. There are more options but this list is a sample of annuals/herbs you can find at a local home improvement store. Try a search for 'deer and drought resistant plants florida' on Google for additional ideas or go to http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/uw137 for advice from the UF Extension service.

If you want to really add color consider removing some or all of the original plantings and adding new shrubs, perennials and annuals. A really excellent resource for extensive landscape updates is the website, www.floridayards.org.  You can select a region and then the type of plant you are interested in. Keep in mind that annuals last for only one season, perennials will come back each year. The existing foundation plantings may be fine as a base background layer of foliage. Adding taller perennials in front of those and annuals on the border is a standard landscape design technique. You may also choose to create beds of annuals for more dramatic areas of color. These annual beds could be interesting under a tree that allows enough sun for the flowers but prevents deep plantings due to tree root mass. Remember that full sun is considered as 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.

Don't forget about wildlife when redesigning your gardens. There are many butterfly and bee attracting flowering plants available at local home improvement stores. For the birds, consider native plants instead of waging a constant feeder battle with squirrels. A list of annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees can be found online at www.nsis.org (click on birds). Easy native options include sunflowers, daisies, grasses, honeysuckle and trumpet vines.

Let me know your thoughts on this article and future topic ideas. Email me at dccliving@gmail.com.

Deercreek YardWelcome Spring!  We certainly did not get the winter beating like the rest of the country but we had a cold north Florida winter. There are plenty of colorful flowers here to welcome the new season. The front garden is lined around a sycamore tree with red and white petunias, geranium, begonia and knockout roses.  This is accented with a potted yucca plant. The surprise is a cable box under that rock.
Deercreek Bird Bath
The corner garden is for the birds. Along with the statues, there is a birdbath, birdfeeder, a hanging "supertunia" plant, potted impatiens and boxwood schillings.
Deercreek Door
The bunny rabbits at the door are under a large potted fern plant.  Other landscaping includes pansies, mums, pittosporum, hollies and mondo grass.
