Deercreek:
We Care
By Patty Tomka

"Our" Marines in Helmand Provence, Afghanistan are now drinking 'Dunkin Donuts' coffee instead of government issued swill and are so grateful for the care packages coming to them from Deercreek.  Two shipments have gone out so far, with the third scheduled for January 16.  The tin boxes we sent have kept the snacks safe from the rats and a new litter of kittens should help keep the problem in check!  The guys are especially pleased with the razors, protein bars and cigars, which are a rare treat for them.
To remind you of the danger our guys face daily, there was an article in the Florida Times Union on 1-8-14 which reported that a Taliban commander wrapped his 10 year old sister in an explosives-packed vest and sent her to blow herself up at a checkpoint in Helmand province!  When she refused to set off the bomb, her father was arrested and they are still searching for her brother.  The Taliban denied any involvement, of course.  This is the daily reality in Afghanistan!  Our guys never know when or where the threats will arrive.  Who would think to look at a 10 year old girl as an unexploded bomb?

So we are even more committed to sending these Marines a gift from home, to thank them for their service, to encourage them and remind them that they are not forgotten.  On Christmas, Lt Prior surprised his mom with a SKYPE call and they got to talk for ½ hour.  He had to get up at 4:00am to coordinate the call, but it was the best Christmas gift she could have received!  The guys are restricted on the amount of time they can spend on computers for personal use and this was the first time Robin has had contact with Brian since he left in October. We hope the other 39 men got to talk with their families too.
Now we're faced with the logistics of sending the packages.  Shipping costs are high!  The first shipment consisted of two boxes, cost $70 to ship and took two weeks to arrive.  The second shipment had 4 big boxes so they cost $180.  We're going to limit it to 70 lbs boxes in the future so we can use Priority Mail and have budgeted $500 per shipment.  We have enough money in our account to fund two more shipments so we are asking the community to help replenish the account.  Since we buy in bulk to save money, we need cash instead of donations to make sure that each Marine gets the same gifts.  We have promised to send these guys boxes from home each of the nine months they are on this assignment and we want to keep our promise.

Valentine's Day is coming soon.  Instead of buying chocolates and flowers for your sweetheart, consider giving that money to the 'Deercreek: WE CARE fund' to let our guys know we care about them too!  A check can go to Karen Rutland (10294 Cypress Lakes Dr), Patricia Mast (8011 Weatherby Ct) or left at the Golf Pro Shop for pick up.  You can also send e-mail to dccliving@gmail.com for more information.  As we go about our comfortable, everyday lives in Deercreek we need to remember that our troops are all over the world, risking their lives every day.  Aren't you glad you don't have to look at children as unexploded bombs?

Highlights from the Annual Meeting

The DCCOA assembled at Deercreek Country Club on January 9 2014 for the annual meeting. George Partin recognized that a quorum of the Membership was established as required based on Association members present or by proxy in the amount of 272.

Board Members present:  George Partin, Doug Klippel, Danny Becton, Doug Matthews, Chris Phillips, and Margie Blake.

President's Report
George Partin discussed the various projects undertaken by the Association in the past year, with the biggest being the Ashford Crossing landscaping project.
There are areas that can be improved upon, including:
o    Road repairs
o    Pedestrian safety
o    Golf cart safety

Treasurer's Report
Danny Becton
A pie chart was presented to provide a visual where money for the budget is allotted. The
income from Comcast and ARB was also explained as well as citations, late/collection fees to the
members. The area where the majority of the budget is spent is for access control and
landscaping. The bad debt account was also discussed, noting a 95% track record in collecting
bad debt.

Danny Becton discussed the $30/quarter assessment increase per household that will be used
to fund the capital reserve fund. This increase in assessments will prevent "special assessments"
in the near future. The biggest capital reserve item that the Board is planning for is the re-paving
of the roads, which will take place in 2016-2017.

Recycle Pick Up

Recycle bins are now being picked up using the new automated Waste Pro trucks. This means that the driver does not get out of the truck to physically handle your recycle container. The automated claw picks up your recycle container and dumps the contents into the truck. To expedite pick up, please take note of the proper positioning of the recycle bins. Take a look at the picture below and ensure your recycle containers are placed exactly the same way at the curb on Fridays.

Golf Carts - Caution!

Submitted by Tommy Walter

golf-cart-green.jpg There are a number of privately owned golf carts on the streets of Deercreek these days. Unfortunately the owners and drivers of these vehicles do not always obey traffic signs and regulations or operate the vehicles in a safe manner.

Here are the rules for driving golf carts in Deercreek:

  • Being motorized vehicles, they are to be driven ONLY by licensed drivers. Drivers who are not licensed will be cited based on Deercreek Board policy.
  • Golf carts with more passengers than seats will be cited for reckless driving.
  • Golf carts are expected to obey stop signs and traffic lanes just like any other motorized vehicle.
The reason for these regulations is not punitive neither is it meant to reduce the pleasure of owning a golf cart.  These regulations are in place solely for safety reasons.

The Deercreek Home and Garden Club presents: "All About Orchids"

Tuesday, February 25 at 10 am
by Patty Tomka

pink-small-flower.jpg Has this ever happened to you? I won an orchid plant as a door prize at one of the Garden Club meetings. It was gorgeous, with two long stems of creamy white blossoms tinged with magenta streaks. I watered it and set it on a table where I could admire it. But soon it wilted and dropped its flowers and ended up looking rather forlorn, with two dried sticks projecting from five leathery oval leaves. In frustration, I stuck it out on the screened porch to fend for itself and ignored it. But orchids are not as fragile as they look. This one liked being ignored and was only watered when it rained. Eventually, it sent out two new stems and is thriving! Obviously, it isn't because of my care. And so I'm looking forward to the February program at the Home and Garden Club where we have invited John Van Brocklin to come and speak to us. He is the Vice President of The Orchid Society in Jacksonville and can answer all our questions about orchids.

The Jacksonville Orchid Society was formed in 1943 and meets each month at the Garden Club of Jacksonville, 1005 Riverside Ave. They welcome guests and visitors if you are interested. The meetings start with culture classes for beginners and new growers, then the general program features different speakers. Members bring in some of their plants each month to share with the group.

On March 15th and 16th, the Jacksonville Orchid Society Show and Sale will present "A Shower of Orchids". Admission is free and you could win a free orchid! Go to www.jaxorchidsociety.org for more information about the show or the organization. The members exhibit their orchids at shows in Gainesville, Volusia and Tallahassee. They also offer repotting clinics on the 1st Saturday of each month at the Ace Hardware on San Jose Blvd in Mandarin from 10-1pm and can give you advice at that time.

If you have an orchid that needs some TLC or would like to know what kind it is, bring it along to the meeting and get some answers from the expert. John Van Brocklin can tell you where to buy them, how to care for them and who to call when you fall in love with them and want to know more! What a nice way to start the year - learning about beautiful flowers and then staying afterwards to have lunch with friends at the Club.

We have another Field Trip planned for March 11 to the Cummer Museum during 'Garden Month' and we will be going to lunch together in Avondale. The gardens at the Cummer are beautiful and you may be inspired to go out and plant something! Or you can simply admire the gardens and leave the planting to the experts! Either way, it will be a nice day out.

Our annual Fashion Show, "The Days of Wine and Roses", is being presented on March 25th this year and tickets go on sale February 1st. Put this on your social calendar because you won't want to miss it. We'll be showing Spring fashions to give you some ideas on how to brighten up your wardrobe.

DWA Nominations: Charities and Officers

The DWA Board will be choosing the charities for this year at our February 6 board meeting.  If you have a charity you would like for us to consider, please notify Donna Bernard at 464-0910.  We will ask you to attend the beginning of the meeting to present your charity. Our expectation is that you will attend Board meetings as a representative for that charity. The nominating committee will also be looking for nominations for President, Vice President, Treasurer, or Secretary.  We will then present a slate of officers for the members to vote on during the March meeting.  If you are interested in any of these offices, please contact Debbie Grosnick at 519-2927.
