The Joys of Deercreek Living

Could it be
Bert or Ernie?

By Modupe Arubuola

Driving back home from the gym a while back, I went deliberately slow taking in the sights and sounds of Deercreek in the morning. I drove along Deercreek Club Road, enjoying the luscious tree lined scenery, the small bodies of water that gives such a beautiful overall effect and the neat landscape designs in the front yard of each house as I went by.

Then suddenly, I thought I saw a familiar shape (or face?) in the shrub at the entrance of one home. I came to a stop, made sure it was safe and did a quick reverse to take a second look. Sure enough it was an open-mouthed Ernie (or was it Bert?) shaped shrub! Oh memories of 'Sesame Street' and those delightful characters. I let out a rich chuckle as I drove away. Couldn't wipe the smile off my face for a long while.

Almost each time I drive by this house, I turn to catch a glimpse of the open-mouthed Ernie (or could it be Bert?) shrub and smile. Aaahh...the joys of Deercreek living!

Highlights from the BOD Meeting

On August 29, 2013 at 7:02 PM the DCCOA Board of Directors (BOD) met for the monthly meeting. A quorum was established with the presence of seven board members. Only Aaron West and Nick Simonic were absent. The forum then reviewed and approved the July 25th minutes.

Property Management: The meeting started off with the Property Manager's report. The report included an update on the open violations since many are being closed as owners call in for re-inspections. Ten new property violations got approved for referral to the covenant enforcement committee.

The Property Manager reported that Heather Lake had a flooding problem which was resolved by blowing out the storm drain and pipe. Based on advice from an engineer, the pipes connecting the ponds should be cleaned every other year. It was determined that there is no need for a storm drain maintenance program. If a problem arises, the affected homeowner or security patrol will contact the property manager who will take the appropriate action to resolve the problem.

The deadline for the original Ashford Crossing RFP was August 30th. It was reported that only two companies submitted bids for the work at an estimated cost between $47,000 - $51,000. After receiving additional information, the Common Property Committee gave a new scope of work to the two bidders; this necessitates a revised RFP which is due by September 4th. On September 5th the Common Property Committee will meet to make a recommendation to the Board. It was further reported that a wildlife company was hired to trap Nutria (river rats) on a pond located behind Bishop Lake Road. A discussion took place regarding the ownership of the ponds and banks. Plat maps show the property line going into the ponds, which makes it the owners' responsibility and not the Associations.

Finance & Legal: The Board reviewed and discussed the July Treasurer's report which showed a $14,770 surplus through the end of July. The Treasurer then reported on the Associations cash balances stating that, though the balance is around $100,000 most of this amount is funds that have been transferred to the reserve account. It was further reported that expenses are trending downwards with a few accounts over budget. Net Income has increased due to the recovery of collection fees. Next, the Treasurer made a motion to approve the revised Finance & Legal Committee Charter. The motion was seconded and after some discussion, it was unanimously approved. In closing, it was mentioned that the schedules for the 2014 budget have been e-mailed to the committees.

The Legal Liaison reported on the status of outstanding receivables. As of July 31st the outstanding balance was $101,570, which was $10,000 less than the previous month. One of the properties with outstanding receivables was sold; and the Association received a check at the closing for $17,692.74 which was for past due assessments, attorney fees and late fees. On four other accounts further legal action will be taken including de-activating their barcodes.

Access Control: The Access Control Liaison informed the Board that the Access Control committee had a motion to put house numbers on the curbs. The Access Control as well as the Covenant Enforcement Committees are in favor of this. There were many questions concerning this motion that could not be answered such as, who would pay for the project and how would it be implemented? The Board was then reminded that displaying house numbers is a city ordinance. The property manager will write an article asking homeowners to clear and trim tree limbs and bushes so that their house numbers can be seen from the streets. Since more research is needed on this issue a motion was made to table the original motion and send it back to the committee.

The Common Property Committee made a motion for the Access Control Committee to assume responsibility for the Guard house's structure and equipment. The motion was seconded and was unanimously approved. Next the liaison shared information on the revised landscape plan for Ashford Crossing. The plan includes four southern magnolia trees and one live oak tree as well as 280 shrubs and 1249 gals of four different groundcovers. Additional irrigation and lighting will need to be installed to ensure that the shrubs and groundcovers are properly watered. The proposed start date for the installation of the plants will be dependent on the completion of installation for the new irrigation system.

Communications: The Communication liaison requested that an article be written asking for volunteers to fill the three seats that will be open for 2014. The Property Manager will prepare an article for the next newsletter which comes out the first of October. Candidates will need to submit their resumes by the middle of October so that their information can be published in the November Newsletter. As a follow up to a different issue, it was suggested that an e-blast survey be conducted to get community opinion on placing house numbers on the curbs. The survey will be conducted before the next board meeting. A local resident who has served three tours of duty in Afghanistan and will be home in mid September. The Board made a motion to approve that a message, "Welcome Home & Thank You for your Service", be placed on the electronic sign board.

CPAC Report: Danny Becton provided the Board with information he obtained from a presentation given by Waste Management. The new trash containers will be delivered on the first of September and the residents of Deercreek will get the 64-gallon containers. Also the schedules received by the residents indicate a Thursday pick up for Yard Waste items which was an error. The pick-up date remains Wednesdays for Yard Waste. Also the Yellow recyclable containers bins are not to be used until September 30th. Waste Management will be mailing out additional information which will indicate what items can go into the recycle bins . Any large items such as appliances require a request for "special pick-up".

New Business: Danny Becton reported that Jeff King with North Florida Emulsions came in and made repairs free of charge and some areas were patched as well. The Property Manager reported that he would be on vacation from September 9th thru September 18th. Cathy Cox will assume the property managers' responsibilities in his absence.

Board of Directors' Election 2013

Submitted by: Richard R. Curran-Kelley

Well, Deercreek homeowners, it's election time again! Time to get motivated and do your part! What, you think I'm talking about the presidential election? That was last year. The election that I am referring to is for the Deercreek Country Club Owners Association Board of Directors.

As happens every year about this time, we need to find candidates who would like to help keep Deercreek one of the premiere communities in Northeast Florida. The Board has three vacancies this year and needs people to step forward and volunteer to show their community spirit by running for the board.

Now, I am sure that some of you are wondering what the Board of Directors does. The Board is responsible for running the Deercreek Country Club Owners Association, Incorporated. This means establishing the budget, working with the various committees and the management company to keep the Association running smoothly, and attending the monthly Board meetings. The Board meetings generally run between one and a half to two and a half hours long. Board members are also expected to serve as liaisons to one of the committees, which generally meet once a month. As you can see, while volunteering your time, the effort is not burdensome. The reward for this gift of your time comes from knowing that you are doing something to maintain and improve your community.

So how do you get involved? Simply send your resume to the Association by October 15th to get yourself a place on the ballot. When the Association's mail-out announcing the annual meeting of the membership of the Deercreek Country Club Owners Association goes out, your name will included on the ballot and the votes will be cast. I hope to see many of you on the ballot and at the annual meeting.

Barbara Langston's  Road show

Tuesday, October 22 at 10:00 am

Drag out that whatchamacallit that your Great Aunt Ellen passed down to you which has been sitting on a shelf for years because you have no idea what to do with it.  Barbara Langston is coming to Deercreek to tell you what it is and if it is worth more than sentimental value.  She has been entertaining us with stories about the unique items brought in for appraisals over the years.  Her knowledge is vast and she is both fun and interesting.

people_shopping.jpgBut there is a very serious side to her business also.  B. Langston's Antiques & Liquidations was established in 1978 as the result of the deaths of her parents, when she was faced with settling the estate and clearing out the house.  In the years since, she has taken many classes and added to her qualifications and is now a licensed antique dealer and appraiser for insurance claims, moving damages and probate purposes.  She helps liquidate estates, downsize households and reduce the number of items that need to be moved.  She handles about 35 auctions a year, doing all the initial valuing and set up through to the public sale days and final clean up.  If you check her web site www.blangston.com you can find future estate sales and auction sites to attend, along with photos of the items offered.

We know her best in her role as an Antiques Expert when we bring in old, strange things and she knows what they are and how much they are worth. She's given countless public lectures and presentations and participated in many 'Trash OR Treasure' programs in the community.  She has been featured on First Coast News and in many newspaper articles.  She knows her stuff so plan to bring along a treasure for appraisal at the October 22 meeting and prepare to be amazed!
Cheryl Rowan will also be hosting a Silpada Jewelry Sale there, so come with your Christmas list in hand.  She always gives a percentage of the sales back to the Garden Club to fund our projects, so we all benefit.

The meeting starts at 10:00 am and you can pre-order lunch if you choose to stay after the meeting to visit with friends. We hope to see you - and your treasures - there.

Said and Samira Samaan

What makes Deercreek Country Club so attractive is driving in and seeing our beautiful landscaped gardens like this one belonging to Said and Samira Samaan. The combination of Mexican petunias, sagos, knock out roses, and the yucca type plants contrasts so nicely with the pampass grass and crape myrtle behind. This property has meticulously hedged shrubs including Indian hawthorne, viburnum, schilling boxwood, junipers, podocarpus and Nellie Stevens hollies which line the periphery of the house. Included in the garden are robillini palms, hydrangeas and nandina.   Some of the flowers are pentas, marigold, vincas and very large caladiums.   While relaxing on the pool deck surrounded by many beautiful potted plants, one can enjoy views of the golf course and nature.

New Trash and Reycle Program

By Carol D'Onofrio

By now you have all received the new trash and recycle bins that will be utilized by Waste Pro, the contractor who provides services to Deercreek on behalf of the City of Jacksonville. Please note the handy dandy magnet schedule that was supplied with the bins contains some incorrect information. It shows our yard waste day as Thursdays, this is not correct. It appears the wrong magnet schedule was inadvertently included with our delivery.

As you may recall, the Board elected to have 64-gallon bins delivered to the entire community instead of the 96-gallon bins that was initially proposed. Each resident has received one trash and one recycle bin. Knowing the covenant restrictions and limited garage space in our neighborhood, the Board felt the 64-gallon bins would be a better fit and help individual home owners to abide by the regulations. As you know, you can upgrade to the larger size by requesting through the COJ web site or call 904-630-CITY. This will be done one time for free, after which a processing fee will be added. If you feel you need additional trash or recycle bins, these are available for a fee. Please note that you cannot interchange the bins.
The recycle (YELLOW TOP) bin is to be used only for recycle products while other trash / garbage goes in the solid GREEN BIN.

Pick up for YARD WASTE is every Wednesday, this will not change.

Implementation begins the week of September 30.

  • Friday, October 4   TRASH and RECYCLE
  • Friday, October 11 TRASH
  • Friday, October 18 TRASH and RECYCLE
  • Friday, October 25 TRASH

And so the calendar cycle continues.

In October the Book Club will read Folly Beach by Dorothea Benton Frank. The meeting will be on Monday October 21st at 10:00am

Folly Beach - Lowcountry Tales

Author: Dorothea Benton Frank
Folly Beach, South Carolina, with its glistening beaches, laid-back Southern charm, and enticing Gullah tradition, is the land of Cate Cooper's childhood, the place where all the ghosts of her past roam freely. Now, thanks to a newly deceased husband whose financial and emotional perfidy has left her homeless and broke, she's returning to this lovely strip of coast.

Once, another woman found comfort here: an artist, writer, and sometime colleague of the revered George Gershwin. With her beloved husband, DuBose, Dorothy Heyward enjoyed the greatest moments of her life at Folly. Though the Heywards are long gone, their passion and spirit linger in every ocean breeze.

To her surprise, Cate is about to discover that you can go home again, for Folly holds the possibility of unexpected fulfilment-not just the memories of the girl she was, but the promise of the woman she's always wanted to become. . .

The ARB would like to remind everyone that all exterior changes to their home (including tree removal and planting) must be submitted for approval prior to work commencing. You have a very valuable resource at www.deercreekcc.com under the ARC section, for submittal forms, submittal requirements, etc. As an ongoing resource in the monthly newsletter we are going to provide some "frequently asked questions" which may be of help to you.

Did you know...
Q. Since the worst Month of hurricane season is here, do I have to have permission to trim my trees?
A.  No, you do not need permission to trim your trees. However, it would be helpful if you would notify May Management that you are doing so in case any questions arise. Trimming your trees is one of the most helpful things that you can do as it allows air to flow between their branches.

Q.  Do you have any reminders for my contractors concerning the approach of a dangerous storm?
A.  Yes, all debris, dumpsters, pavers, scaffolding, building materials, etc., are to removed from the premises or stored in the owner's garage at least 12 hours before the storm is predicted to hit. That way your contractors can be home taking care of their own families.

If you have any questions please call at 273-9832 and ask for the ARB office.

Please Note:  MAY Management has moved their offices.  The new address is 240 Canal Boulevard, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL  32082

To help celebrate this fun holiday the DWA will be collecting these donation items during the month of October. As you are shopping, please consider picking up a small item that could be utilized by the RMHC for Halloween.

Summer Team Pro-Lady Victory is ours!
By Tom Maxwell

On Monday, August 26, a team of Deercreek ladies (Terry Templeton, NenetteBanzon and Mary Choe) and I drove to Long Point at Amelia Plantation to compete in the year-end Summer Team Pro-Lady. With a birdie on the first hole by Nenette, the day started off in the right direction. Terry birdied a tough par three a few holes later and Mary came through on some clutch pars. To give you an idea of how well these ladies played and represented Deercreek, I gave it all I had and was only able to help the team on one hole. At the end of the round, we were 21 under in the format of Two Net Best Balls to win the 2013 Summer Team Pro-Lady. With this victory, Deercreek brings home the trophy for one year waiting for our next chance to repeat the title in 2014. Congratulations to our Deercreek Ladies.

Help, Mushroom Menace
 By ModupeArubuola

Driving out on a Saturday afternoon, everything looked good with the lawn or so I thought. I threw a satisfied gaze round the front yard as I drove off thinking once again; I've won the battle!

Sunday morning as we were leaving for Church, my husband commented that it seemed our mushroom frenemies had moved to the neighbor's yard. What? It was all I could do to restrain myself from dashing over there to start rooting out the ugly things. I still did not like seeing those little umbrella-like shapes on the lawn across from us. I wondered if I should tell them about my simple method of attack?  Who knows, they may have their own approach. Later in the afternoon driving back home from Church, I was shocked to see a couple of white blobs on the east side of my yard! I thought I was free of these things? Who spends time and money on their lawn to make it look beautiful, lush, green and even only to have the place invaded by mushrooms?

Yes, I call it an invasion and I've been trying to figure out a safe way to get rid of them for a while now, but I'm still stumped. First, they show up as little white blobs and then within a day or so, they transform into these monstrous umbrella shaped lawn-defacing entities that just send me into a fit! I've tried rooting them out before they balloon but new ones spring up before I know it.

I noticed the mushrooms for the first time last summer, and after uprooting them a few times (new ones kept springing up, always around the base of the tree in my front yard) I consulted my lawn maintenance guy, who suggested dusting some baking soda into each spot that I remove a mushroom from. He said this was his mother's way of getting rid of the silly things back when he was little. Off I went to Walmart, grabbed a box of baking soda and did as I was told. What a simple and safe way to solve the problem I thought. Hurray! The recurrence fizzled out and by the fall there were no more mushrooms. I didn't even use half of my box of baking soda. Was I glad!
{Insert mushroom pix}

I was so sure I had won the battle, until this summer when the ugly monstrosities started showing up again; in the same area they did last summer.  This time I was prepared - so I went on the attack, carefully rooting each one out and shaking some baking soda into each spot. Within a week however, I had gone through two boxes of baking soda; the shrooms seemed to have returned with a vengeance this time. Just the other day, I happened to glance at the back yard through the patio screen and was dismayed to see the shrooms on my back lawn too! Thank goodness I had not gone to boast to my neighbors about my fail-proof baking soda method before now.  I give up, this is no longer a battle I can wage on my own. I'm going to call NADERS to see if they can help rid my lawn of this menace, arrrgh!
