Bikram Yoga For Runners

Whether you like to run the odd 5k or a full marathon,
Bikram Yoga can be a wonderful way to prepare.
BYCer Laura Turner, who is an ex GB sprinter & Olympic Athlete, says:
'Bikram Yoga has been a fantastic tool in my training and competition, allowing me to be at my best and compete against the best. I strongly recommend Bikram Yoga to all runners as an excellent cross-training and recovery tool. I will certainly never be without Bikram Yoga in my life, even after I hang up my running shoes and retire from international athletics.'
So why is Bikram Yoga so useful for runners?*
One of the most common conditions runners are prone to is 'Runner's Knee'. This is the irritation of the cartilage on the underside of the patella, aka kneecap. Bikram Yoga can help strengthen your quadriceps, which will improve patellar tracking, as well as stretching your hamstrings and calves, which will prevent over-pronation. Charlie Merrill, M.S.P.T., a physical therapist, also highlights the importance of strengthening weak hip and glute muscles, to ward off runner's knee. So: Awkward, Triangle, Camel, Standing Separate Leg Stretching and Tree Pose (to name but a few) are all great postures to help with this.
However, if you have already been struck down, then, initially, some post run ice and rest will help with the early stage of pain relief. If symptoms persist, always consult your GP.
The fabulous BYC heat and stretching come into play as the injury starts to heal.
Don't worry, we have plenty of postures to flush that knee with fresh oxygenated blood, helping to heal and repair, ready to pound those pavements again in no time
(you mad things)! ;)
Other injuries runners are prone to, such as Achilles Tendinitis, Hamstring Issues, Plantar Fasciitis, Shinsplints and Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS) can all be kept at bay with regular Bikram Yoga practice. The 26 postures systematically strengthen and stretch your entire body. The yoga improves your alignment, therefore, when running, any imbalances won't be exacerbated, or cause injury, as the body compensates for our misalignment.
For example, in an article she wrote for us last year, Laura mentions that: 'Working on my foot strength and isometric strength in my legs is extremely important for me, having suffered 3 stress fractures in my feet. Runners will put their feet through a lot of pounding so it is important they are strong enough to avoid injury. The balancing series has proved to help strengthen my feet and legs.
In an article entitled 'YOGA FOR RUNNERS: A HOT LOOK AT YOGA'
JERRY ARMSTRONG talks about how, after many years battling with overuse injuries, he finally discovered Bikram Yoga and
it has been invaluable to him and his running.
'I have not had any overuse injuries, since I began practicing (Bikram) Yoga. The nagging running injuries that sidelined me years ago, like IT band tightness, lower back pain, and runner's knee are just distant memories. If I feel anything in my body that amounts to a possible running injury, I visit the studio and get my 90 minutes of practice. On almost every occasion, the pain subsides within 24 hours of my session and I regain my regular training as if it never happened. '
So, runners, pop off your trainers and we'll see you on the mat!
*If you have an injury we would always recommend consulting your doctor.

Aaaccchhhhooooo You I'm ill, should I still come to class?
When in doubt - DON'T sweat it out!!! Starting to feel under the weather? Bad cold, flu, a nasty bug? Your body is telling you to stop, rest and recover.
Hopefully, one of the first things our practice gives us, is respect for our incredible bodies.
So, just as Savasana teaches us stillness and gives us space to heal, when you are ill, give yourself the opportunity to recover, before jumping back into your practice.
Get well soon and we will see you on the other side!
