KVMR Lightbox
Martin Luther King Day Special Programming

The tradition continues. On Martin Luther King Day, Monday, January 18th, the Bethel Ame Choir of Marysville, comes to Nevada City for KVMR's annual King Day Celebration Concert.

We're excited to announce this very special, traditional event takes place in the historic Nevada Theatre for the very first time, which includes a new backstage large enough to hold both the Bethel Choir and the Trinity Choir of Nevada City and legendary acoustics to make the event a wonder to hear.

Admission is free to all of the community. Doors open at 11:30am for the concert at Noon. Come and join this joyous celebration of the civil rights movement and dedicated to the nonviolent ideals of Martin Luther King.

In addition, special programming comes your way all day on KVMR which will also broadcast the concert live at noon and bring you an hour of the concert Monday night at 6pm for those who can't attend live.

We shall overcome...

Bridge to a Million

The  "Bridge to a Million" campaign-launched in November by KVMR and the Nevada Theatre to raise $1 million-got off to a strong start as $287,525 was raised last month in donations and pledges for the new building housing the community radio station and a new backstage for the historic theater.

The yearlong initiative was created to help pay for the Bridge Street Project, a four-level 8,000-square-foot building at the corner of Bridge and Spring streets in downtown Nevada City, across from the Miners Foundry. The $4-million project contains KVMR studios, offices and a Community Room, in addition to the new 1,600-square-foot backstage.

Houston Jones and Susie Glaze & the Hilonesome Band

Houston Jones and Susie Glaze & the Hilonesome Band perform a very special concert at the Sutter Creek Theatre on Saturday January 16th.

This concert will be dedicated to the memory of our great friend, the late Dennis Friis, a longtime resident of Sutter Creek. It was Dennis and Karen Friis who got us hooked on the wonderful town of Sutter Creek many years ago, whose warm hospitality and love of music welcomed Houston Jones into their home as a house concert venue numerous times, and who encouraged the band to pursue a booking at this great venue, The Sutter Creek Theatre, years ago.

The concert will be broadcast live on KVMR, hosted by

KVMR Underwriter of the Month

"Sustainable, Recycled & Native Hardwoods"
1980 Grass Valley Highway Auburn, CA  95959
530-888-8191

For the last 15 years, California Harwood Producers (CHP) has continued the tradition of the CAL-IDA lumber company and sawmill, formerly located on the current mill site. Unlike most lumber yards, which are primarily resellers of softwood products made by corporate giants, California Hardwood Producers mill their wood products on site and carry recycled materials from deconstructed buildings and manufacture products from trees that have been removed from urban forests. Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. Resell. Sustainability within the lumber world it at the core of their business model.

California Hardwood Producers specialize in woods native to California and carries many imported exotics for flooring, moulding, lumber, slabs, beams & timbers. Softwoods are available, too.

Amateurs, hobbyist and professional woodworkers, alike, are welcome. The sustainable wood products are perfect for crafting furniture, cabinets, toys, interior decorating and artisan works large or small.

The lengthy list of CHP hardwoods include English Walnut, Claro Walnut, Eastern Black Walnut, Australian Lacewood, Osage Orange, Yellow Heart, Canarywood, Ribbon Mahogany, Paduak, Phillipino Teak, Mahogany, Camphor, Rosewood, Red Gum Eucalyptus, Blue Gum Eucalyptus, Applewood, Pearwood, Madagascar Ebony, Chesnut, Silver Maple, Pacific Coast Maple Birds Eye Maple, Spaulted Maple, Hardrock Maple, European Red Elm, Chinese Elm, Beech, Birch, Catalpa, Monterey Cypress, Purpleheart, Zebrawood, Alder, American Cherry, Jatoba, Hickory, Poplar, Tulipwood, Mulberry, Myrtlewood, Liquid Amber, Sitka Spruce, Spruce, 1/4 Sawn spaulted spruce, Red Oak, Black Oak, Tan Oak, White Oak, 1/4 White Oak, Madrone, Mango. But CHP also carries softwoods include Redwood, Aromatic Cedar, Doug Fir, Ponderosa Pine, Sugar Pine, Alaskan Cedar, Italian Rock Pine, Yellow Pine, and Spaulted Pine (Blue stain).

On July 10th, 1997 the entire California Hardwood Producers mill
burnt to the ground.  The cause of the fire went underdetermined, but that did not stop owner Dave Parmenter from continuing forward with his passion and success. Today, California Hardwood Producers employs 10 people, locally. And Dave has a continued passion for working with reclaiming wood for artisans and art co-ops - collecting beautifully colored waste wood to be reused.

Dave and California Hardwood Producers "Love KVMR!" And as a self-proclaimed "old hippie" Dave noted, "We are local people supporting local stuff," whether that be those gorgeous native hardwoods they work with or KVMR Community Radio.

"We are just trying to do good work. . ." And so is KVMR. . .
