FAYETTEVILLE'S WESTAREA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL NEEDS YOUR HELP IN SUPPORTING OUR TROOPS IN AFGHANISTAN Dear Volunteers - The 4th grade students at Westarea Elementary School are embarking on a project that will help them practice their writing skills. The goal of this project is twofold. The students will prepare themselves to excel in the writing process, and at the same time they will demonstrate the character trait of caring. Students will become pen pals with soldiers on assignment in Afghanistan. They will write letters and send thank you cards to express their appreciation of the job our soldiers are doing to protect our peace, security, and safety in a free country. They will also send "bags full of goodness" to the soldiers as an act of kindness, demonstrating the character trait of caring. This project will be important for our students because they will have a chance to practice the writing process and enhance their writing skills in a more focused and exciting way. While their concentration is on communicating with their pen pals and having fun they will be improving writing skills that will remain with them for a life time. Westerea serves predominantly low income neighborhoods, with 90% of the students receiving free or reduced lunch. Most of the students live in single parent homes, and are not always able to access funds for purchasing items needed for special projects. Seldom do these students get to enjoy the opportunity of giving to others, especially to people that they do not know. This project will inspire the students as they meet new friends, and at the same time show how much they care about the important things our military men and women are doing. We ask you to join us in this effort by donating items such as books, paper, pens and note pads as well as toiletries, socks, soup, noodles and other snacks to put in the bags that we will be sending to the soldiers. We will also accept monetary donations that will be used to purchase bags and pay for postage. If you have any questions or would like to assist us with this project, please contact Jennifer McQueen at Westerea Elementary School, 910-488-1705. Thank you in advance for assisting our students in this great effort, and for supporting our troops. ARMY’S ARMY FAYETTEVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA |
