Older Americans Act Finally Reauthorized

After 6 long years, President Obama signed the 2016 Older American Act (OAA) Reauthorization into law last month. This law authorizes programs that provide critical services to seniors in our local communities. Alliance on Aging's HICAP (Medicare Counseling), Ombudsman for Long-term Care, and Outreach & Benefits Checkup programs are among some of the local programs that receive funding. They provide critical services to seniors, ensuring access to Medicare information and optimum health care savings as well as advocacy to vulnerable residents in our local nursing homes and assisted living facilities. It funds outreach to seniors and families to help them access the resources and benefits that provide other kinds of support and financial relief.

Thank you for your generous financial support that helps Alliance on Aging leverage the Older American dollars that do not cover the cost of these vital services. And many thanks for your support for this ongoing reathorization effort.

May is Older Americans Month. This year's theme is 'Blaze a Trail". Click here for tip sheets you can use to blaze your own trail to: Civil Engagement, Reinvention, Securing Your Finances and Wellness.

I REMEMBER MAMA
Did you know that Mothers' Day can be an especially lonely occasion for hundreds of women living in skilled nursing and assisted living facilities? These elderly women have little to no communication with anyone from outside the facilities.

Alliance on Aging's
"I Remember Mama" event has changed that.

This event has brightened the lives of senior women for the past 21 years. On Mother's Day weekend, community volunteers will visit each of the 76 senior care facilities in the county to deliver a flowering plant to a senior woman. Over 1,200 flowering plants were delivered last year.

A $35 donation will provide a flowering plant for one of these senior women on Mother's Day. You can also designate the plant in honor of someone special. Your donation also supports the important work of the Ombudsman Program, the program that advocates for the best care possible for seniors living in nursing homes and residential care facilities.
