@aoa . . . e-news from Alliance on Aging

AOA Logo
Dear Friends,

As the Alliance on Aging approaches its 44th year of service to seniors in Monterey County, the holidays provide a good time for reflection, gratitude and inspiration. The lives of hundreds of thousands of seniors and their families have been made better through the selfless dedication and hard work of the volunteers and staff of Alliance on Aging. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them and recognize their contributions to our local seniors. Our volunteers are an interesting and diverse group of individuals from all parts of the county and all walks of life, but they share at least one thing in common - a desire and commitment to help seniors. The Medicare Counselors help seniors navigate and negotiate the complex and dynamic Medicare world. Ombudsmen visit and advocate for dignity and optimum quality of life for the most vulnerable seniors in our local nursing homes and assisted living facilities.  The Senior Peer Counselors offer emotional support and difficult changes that come with aging. Our Tax Counselors assist with the preparation of tax returns and facilitate tax refunds which help buy groceries, medications and other basic necessities. The Outreach Specialists reach out beyond the walls of our offices into the community to make our services and other senior services known and accessible to seniors and their families. Our Luncheon Crew serves a hearty lunch and big smiles to a very grateful crowd of local seniors. Our Spirals Team keeps our benefit store in pristine condition and creates a warm and welcoming environment for customers and visitors. Our Annual Support Campaign team enthusiastically shares our message and helps raise money to support our work. The members of our Board and Committees give of their time and lend their valuable expertise to provide oversight and guidance to ensure the implementation of our mission.

These volunteers rely on our very talented and hard working staff who bring the passion to their work and humanity which inspire their continued commitment. None of this would be possible without the "non-human" resources: the dollars that it takes to support our mission. Thank you to all of you who give so generously throughout the year and to our local foundations and organizations that support seniors in our community through their funding to the Alliance on Aging.

May your holidays be peaceful and joyful.

The use of psychotropics for people with dementia has come under increased scrutiny from policymakers and the long-term care industry. The symposium sessions will review the recent efforts to end the misuse of psychotropic drugs in dementia care but more importantly, explain a different form of care based on comfort, engagement, and human relationships. Particular attention will be paid to initiating and sustaining comfort-focused care in long term care facilities.

This symposium is designed to teach non-pharmacologic interventions for the treatments of people with dementia and why such options are often superior to psychotropic drugs.
