Medicare Open Enrollment is Upon Us

Open Enrollment is the one time of year when ALL people with Medicare can see what new benefits Medicare has to offer and make changes to their prescription drug coverage.  It's worth it to take the time to review and compare, but you don't have to do it alone.  We're here to help.  Call HICAP - the Medicare Program at Alliance on Aging. 800.434.0222.

There are also a number of Medicare Update seminars being held in the coming weeks.  Click here to see a list of scheduled dates and be sure to check the News and Events page on our site for updates.

Flu Ends with You

On Friday, October 18 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., the Central Coast VNA will hold a flu shot clinic at Spirals. In addition to flu shots, the T-dap and pneumonia vaccines will also be available.

Spirals Has Furniture Galore

Stop by and see the wonderful furniture we have received recently.  There's the rattan sofa and ottoman, perfect for the sun room; or the unique oversized coffee table made of reclaimed barn wood by The Wooden Duck in Berkeley.  If your design tastes are more formal, look at the wingback chair from the Lillian August Collection, the Chippendale style table or the beautiful 9 x 12' Karastan rug.  Come by and see what's new.  There are new arrivals every day.

Cleaning out your closets?

Bring those lightly worn clothing, jewelry and accessories (men's and women's) to our donation drop-off in Salinas.  Donations will be accepted the last Friday of every month from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Alliance on Aging office at 247 Main Street in Old Town Salinas.  Your generous donations will go toward supporting the vital programs of the Alliance of Aging.

What You Need to Know

It's a busy time in our county.  As always, we need to remain aware and educated in the up to the minute news.  One of, if not the biggest news stories of the week, is the government shutdownClick here for an explanation of just what this means and how it will affect you.

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) is the hot topic and as with any new system there is a lot of information out there. It's imperative that you know what's what. Most important is that those with Medicare do NOT need to buy insurance through the new Health Insurance Marketplace. The new options are completely separate from the Medicare Open Enrollment period and we strongly encourage you to contact a HICAP representative prior to making any decisions about your Medicare coverage.

Click here for a fact sheet that discusses the difference between the Affordable Care Act and the Medicare Open Enrollment period.

2013 Annual Support Campaign Update

In the first week of our Annual Support Campaign

we have raised $19,380.  With an incredible team of volunteers, led by our Campaign Chair Sally Green, and the support of many generous donors in our community, we have every intention of meeting our goal this year.

If you are contacted for a donation to the Annual Support Campaign,

please be generous to our volunteers - they are working hard to raise the money needed to ensure that our programs and services stay alive for the many seniors who are courageously struggling in these tough economic times.  This is your opportunity to celebrate the wisdom and achievements older adults in Monterey County have made.
