What's New at Alliance on Aging?

*Get a Benefits Checkup*
Coming in December, the Alliance on Aging offers the Benefits Checkup Program.  If you are aged 60 and over, you may be eligible for benefits that can help to stretch your income.  These include: CalFresh, a debit card for groceries that can be used at most grocery stores and many farmers' markets, Medicare's Extra Help program, home energy and assistance, or a free cell phone with inexpensive minutes, and more.  To schedule an appointment, beginning December 1, call our Benefits Checkup hotline direct at 831-655-1149, or the Alliance on Aging main line at 831-655-1334, and say, "I'd like a benefits checkup".

*Tai Chi: Gentle movements for your mind, body & spirit*
A new Tai Chi class, cosponsored by the Arthritis Foundation at the AOA Salinas office begins in January, preceded by an introductory seminar, "Living Well with Arthritis".  Tai Chi is an ancient practice proven to improve your mental and physical wellbeing. Using gentle Sun-style routines, the program is suitable for every fitness level.  Check the listings in next month's issue of @aoa for details on the series.  For additional information, contact Michelle Lopez at 831.655.4241.

 There's Still Time

Part D Open Enrollment season is in full swing and you still have time to make the necessary changes to your drug plan. Attend one of our Drop-In Days to have your plan evaluated.  We have times scheduled in Salinas and on the Peninsula.

Still need to learn about your options and changes in plans?  We have a number of Medicare Update seminars scheduled for the coming weeks, too.

Whatever your question or concern, our Medicare specialists are here to help.  Click here to learn about the program.

Transit Need in Spreckels

In response to concerns from seniors about the lack of a bus stop in Spreckels, we are distributing a questionnaire from the Transportation Agency of Monterey County (TAMC) about unmet transit needs.  If you believe there is an unmet transportation need in Spreckels or elsewhere in Monterey County, complete an Unmet Transit Needs Questionnaire and make your needs known.  Remember, your voice counts!

You Made it Happen!

We made our goal of $106,000 for this year's Annual Support Campaign.  It's time to celebrate.  We are very grateful to those of you who participated and supported our efforts.  We thank you.  If you would still like to make a gift, it's never too late.

There is a great deal to do with follow-up, finalizing pledges, and thank you notes but we want to again thank the leadership of this campaign: Sally Green, Sallie Savage, Allan Marcus and Vearl Gish.  Kudos to Team Captains Ron Kihara, Laura Lasnik, Sandi Thibodeaux, Jackie Woods Sarah Guzman and team members Perry Flicker, Roger Powers, Dave Potter, Randy Rios, Stephen & Paula Doolittle, Pam McCrumb, Gracie Rubio, Louann Raras, Sue Netzorg, Margie Sokotowski, Diane Gsell, Bill Sullivan, Tracy Burke, Allan Vasquez, and Kathy Grainger.  A special thank you goes out to Sharon Gish for her willingness to share her immense campaign knowledge to benefit Alliance on Aging.

We will soon meet to wrap up our campaign and start planning for 2013.  Should you have interest in serving on our Campaign Cabinet for 2013 or have ideas for us, please don't hesitate to contact

Michelle Noseworthy, Development Director at 831.655.4243.
