Version 7 and Windows 10

Thayer Birding Software STRONGLY recommends that you start using Windows 10 as soon as possible.

Microsoft released their new operating system on July 29th. It is called Windows 10 and it is free to those using Windows 7 or Windows 8. It is a big improvement over previous operating systems.

I am running version 7.0.3 of our birding software on Windows 10 and everything is working perfectly. Installing the new operating system update was extremely easy. It took about 60 minutes.

I have a lot of custom photos and songs I have imported to make quizzes when I go on birding trips overseas. The Windows 10 update does not affect anything like this at all. My custom media and my sightings are still working fine.

Here is a well done review of Windows 10:

Microsoft XP No Longer Supported

Microsoft stopped supporting Windows XP over a year ago. As of August 1, 2015 we will also stop providing technical support for any version of Thayer Birding Software if you are still running this extremely outdated and obsolete operating system.

Mac Version 7 Coming Soon

The Mac version 7 (with 3,000 additional photos) should be available in September 2015. We hope to begin beta testing of the Mac version in mid-August. Let us know if you would like to be a Mac beta tester!

There are a few differences between the Mac and Windows versions. Most are very minor. But the ability to import your own images and make custom quizzes on anything is a really valuable feature found only in the Windows version. This feature is not available in the Mac version.

Therefore, we recommend that Mac users install Windows 10 on their Mac computer, using the free Mac software called Boot Camp. In this way you will be able to run the Windows version on your computer. We will be releasing a new YouTube video next week showing how to do this.

Survey Results for Bird Names

We thought we would have a little fun and ask folks that subscribe to any one of our newsletters how they would like to see bird names appear. The choice was Bald Eagle or bald eagle. Over 83% of you recommended sticking with Bald Eagle - so we will.

Surprisingly this is a very controversial topic! Most birding and ornithological publications favor capitalizing bird common names. But the general press (and now Wikipedia) do NOT capitalize bird names.

As my friend Bill Thompson III, editor of BirdWatcher's Digest wrote in his response

"Yes it's correct to say that the birding mags typically capitalized all bird names. Interestingly they only do this for birds in most cases and not other non-bird species. So they have sentences like this:

The Red-tailed Hawk dove toward the eastern cottontail rabbit, missed its target, barely avoided a collision with a cocker spaniel, and landed in the red maple, next to a Great Horned Owl.

No, BWD isn't changing. We stick to the larger rules of the English language and capitalize only proper names. Like Pete Thayer's gull."
