Ten Thousand Birds
Ornithology Since Darwin
Ten Thousand Birds provides a thoroughly engaging and authoritative history of modern ornithology, tracing how the study of birds has been shaped by a succession of visionary and often-controversial personalities, and by the unique social and scientific contexts in which these extraordinary individuals worked.
Drawing on a wealth of archival material and in-depth interviews, this fascinating book reveals how research on birds has contributed more to our understanding of animal biology than the study of just about any other group of organisms. Just published - ARRIVING SOON!

The Sibley Guide to Birds

COMING MID-MARCH!
A best seller for more than a dozen years, and now: the completely revised and updated second edition of the most comprehensive, widely acclaimed bird guide available.
Larger illustrations, re-digitized art, and 600 new paintings are just a few of the changes in this edition. Click here for more information on the guide and what's new. We anticipate availability around March 11th, but we'll be sure to send out an announcement to let you know when you can order!
"I have had my order ready to go ever since David Sibley announced he was working on his 'new and improved' Field Guide. I can't believe it is almost here!! Both copies of my Sibley first edition are really getting dog-eared! I am getting copies for each of my favorite grandchildren too. " - Pete Thayer, Thayer Birding Software and Online Nature Mall

Binoculars Are For The Birds!
We've refined our binocular selection to focus on highly recommended models for birding, covering different price points. We've weeded a few out and added three new models this month. Crossfire II 10x42 and 8x42: We strongly recommend these if you are on a tight budget or you want a second binocular to keep handy at the kitchen window or in the glove compartment. The 8 power will let in more light. So they are better at dusk. The 10 power has a higher magnification - ideal for those with steady hands. The new Diamondback 10x42 is a step above the Crossfire II but still will not break the bank. Higher powered than the 8x42 to "bring the birds in a little closer."

Pete's Binocular Golden Rule:
"ALWAYS buy the very best binocular you can possibly afford. You will never regret paying for quality when it comes to seeing the birds!"
|
One last note - in case you forgot (or didn't know), the Great Backyard Bird Count is THIS WEEKEND! It's a great opportunity to help researchers learn more about what the birds are doing today, and you can participate from your own backyard. Perfect for any birder - young or old, beginner or expert. We hope you'll join the fun!
Sincerely, Pete and Kara
