Greetings!
We wanted to let you know that the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and Audubon are getting ready for the 16th Great Backyard Bird Count this Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday (February 15-18th.) This is a really big deal and you can help!!
Participation is free and all you have to do is go to their web site and check off the birds you see. The idea is that if tens of thousands of folks from all over the world do this, the scientists can get a better idea of how the birds are doing. After the huge winter storms and the droughts this year, results might be quite different than last year! That is why it is especially important to get as many participants as possible this weekend.
For the first time this program is open to anyone in the world! Tell your friends living overseas about this birding event - or hop on a plane and let us know what you see in Rio de Janeiro this weekend!!
As a thank you, when you enter your bird sightings you will receive a special discount code for all Thayer Birding Software DVDs and Cornell Lab audio guides - so look for the special promotional code!

Fill Your Bird Feeders! Suet, Thistle and Sunflower Seeds
Now would be a great time to visit your local wild bird store to stock up on bird seed and suet cakes. Ask them what the best seed mix is for your area - they know!! If you are not sure if there is a specialty store like this near you, click HERE for a map that will show you where to find them.
Did you know that there are actually specialized feeders for different types of bird seed:
Suet Feeders (Woodpeckers like these)
Seed Feeders - (Birds love sunflower seeds)
Hummingbird Feeders (in southern states)
Thistle Feeders (Goldfinches like these)
Heated Water Baths (Everyone likes these)
