A NOTE FROM TIM
Strategic Partnership Formed

Tim Crum promotional shot
It's been an unusual start to our Spring, hasn't it?  Here in the desert Southwest we have already experienced our first 100' day - about three weeks earlier than the average first 100' day.  But many of our friends in the Rockies, upper Midwest and northern Plains have been dealing with freakishly cold weather.

Spring is a time of "renewal".  Flowers, plants and trees "spring" back to life and display vibrant hues of colors that we've all missed.  And that reminded me of an artist friend that I had the pleasure of working with many years ago while I was at PetSmart Charities.  The artist's name is Gregg Valley and his work showcases brilliant splashes of color.  We've stayed in touch through the years and I have always admired his paintings that have adorned the side of buildings and more recently he was commissioned to pat the interior of a cat clinic. I'm featuring a short article on Gregg and his talent in this issue in the hopes.  If you like his work, perhaps he can be commissioned to produce an original piece of work for your new animal shelter!

ANIMAL ARTIST PAINTS HIS WAY INTO THE HEARTS OF PET LOVERS

Gregg  Valley has been creating vibrant, lively and unique images ever since his graduation in 1986 with a BFA in illustration from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA. After working in the publishing industry for many years using a colored pencil style, he developed a digital technique that he calls "facetism." This is achieved by blocking out large shapes within an image, then cutting them into many smaller shapes, which are then individually colored. This unique style lends itself well to a wide variety of national clients including the National Wildlife Federation, National Public Radio, PetSmart Charities, as well as many other magazines, newspapers and publishers.

PetSmart Art

Gregg has done work with a few animal groups and is available for hire if your animal shelter needs an original piece of art work for the interior or exterior, Gregg would be happy to commission an original one-of-a-kind piece for your group.

Gregg painted this in a Cat Clinic in California..

Cat Clinic6  If you would like to be introduced to Gregg, please contact Tim Crum at 623.975.1234.  He would be happy to facilitate a personal introduction.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Due to the high demand for Gregg, he is not available to donate his time or work for events or other projects.

STOP BY OUR BOOTH
 A FABULOUS FACEBOOK WELCOME

Many nonprofits have a plan for welcoming new donors or even email subscribers, but few have nailed down how to extend the same experience to their fans on social media. If social is part of your outreach, don't miss the opportunity to build a personal connection with these potential donors. Arts of Life, a Chicago-based nonprofit offering services for developmentally disabled adults, is a shining example of an organization that understands the value of a warm welcome.

I was pleasantly surprised by a message I received from Arts of Life, a Chicago-based nonprofit I recently "Liked" on Facebook:

"Hi Caryn!

Thank you for 'Liking' The Arts of Life!

We do paintings and drawing and we clean up the studio every day of the week! Not only do we clean up the studio but we do yoga, dancing and gardening! The Arts of Life is the best because I like it here. The studio is like the second family we never had. The Arts of Life is a home to live, to work, and to play!

I want to talk about The Arts of Life Band! I was on the front of the Chicago Reader in my soldier outfit! Check it out...http://www.chicagoreader.com/chicago/arts-of-life-teaches-developmentally-disabled-to-rock/Content?oid=4920488

To receive an original birthday card from The Arts of Life, join our mailing list!https://www.facebook.com/artsoflife/app_100265896690345Come tour either the Chicago or North Shore Studio to see what it's like to be an artist ..."

The message went on to describe what I might see on a tour of their studios and offered a specific point of contact, with a name, phone number and email address. This welcome note was sent through Facebook from David Krueger, an artist and musician who benefits directly from Arts of Life's programs.

I'm already a big fan of Arts of Life and what they do, but this surprising touch only helped solidify my warm feelings for them.

Here's why this works:

  • It was unexpected.
  • It was personal and genuine.
  • It made me want to find out more.
  • It invited me to connect in other ways.
  • It thanked me.

In our social media outreach, it's tempting to want to "set it and forget it", but for long-term success, nonprofit fundraisers must create an ongoing positive experience for their audiences. Just as you'd welcome a new donor or email subscriber, take time to create a special welcome plan for new social media followers to set the stage for the wonderful experience they'll have with your organization.

Kudos to Arts of Life for showing us how to get it right!
