Letter from the Associate

Director

  Annie

As we wind down another semester, as always, it's hard to believe that another year is over. It's been an eventful year with many strategic planning meetings, and continuing change here at Tufts. The shock of the Marathon bombings and ensuing events were unsettling and unifying at the same time. It has reaffirmed for me the strength that comes from being in community, given me a renewed appreciation for the strong faculty community we have here at Tufts, and reminded me "not to sweat the small stuff." I wish you all a summer where you can focus on what is important in your lives, and that you return in the fall refreshed and prepared to continue all the good work that you do.

Warmly,

Annie

We encourage you to borrow from our collection either by stopping by, or by emailing us.

Returning in fall of 2013:

The next CELT faculty book group...we chose

Whistling Vivaldi: How Stereotypes Affect Us and What We Can Do by Claude Steele from Stanford and this year's graduation speaker as our fall book, and it has also been chosen at the community read for incoming undergraduate students. To see an interview with Professor Steele, click here. We invite you to join us for this discussion and a nice lunch on October 25th from 12:00 - 1:30pm. Some of you may have the book, but we have purchased a dozen copies for those who do not. To register, please email us, let us know whether or not you will need a copy of the book, and if so, where to mail it.

CELT introduced a new program this year offering mid-term evaluations for faculty. The program has proven very popular, and we were at full capacity for this semester! Keep you eyes open for the fall announcement inviting you to take advantage of this opportunity to get feedback on your course while you still have time to make improvements!

New in fall of 2013:

We will support a Faculty Learning Community of 8 - 12 faculty on the topic of teaching for inclusive excellence. The group will be self-directed, meet over the academic year to explore the topic and best practices in teaching our richly diverse undergraduate students, and have a small budget for speakers and materials to support the group's learning. For this first community, we will invite Arts, Sciences and Engineering faculty to join. If you might be interested, please email us, and we will follow up with you when we form the community in September.

CELT will offer a four day course design / redesign workshop for faculty in January. Using a "backward design" method, this Course Design Institute (CDI) is an efficient and collegial way for faculty to build a new course or tweak an old one.

We will expand this year's pilot program offering mini-grants for faculty who want to expand their networks through Mutual Mentoring. Mutual Mentoring allows faculty to set up networks of colleagues including peers, senior faculty, near peers, administrators, librarians or students. CELT will be offering mini-grants for faculty who wish to set up their own network of colleagues to provide support in their career. Applications and informational workshop will held in the early fall.

Hold the date:

This year's December Teaching Conference will be on the Medford Campus, and will focus on the science of learning. Mark your calendar for what should be a very interesting topic! December 10, 8:30 am - 4:00 pm. Registration will open in the fall.
