Greetings!

Greetings! Just when I think spring is here, the temperature drops and it actually snows a little! Sure, it doesn't last long, but I'm really excited for some warm weather!

Earlier this year I shared that we started something new with our management team - sprinting (to clarify, not running, but rather an aspect of agile approaches to work). We've been through a couple of 'sprints' and they have felt great. After each one everyone comes away excited because we accomplished quite a bit in a short amount of time. One of the struggles we are working through now is that, often times, when we "complete" something, it is a critical piece of a bigger item and, therefore, there are follow up steps that need to be taken. We are attempting to consider these items as complete and have new topics for our next meeting; however, the follow up then falls to our time outside of the sprint. As a team, we then start to do sprint-related tasks outside of the time allotted, which defeats the very reason we are trying to sprint.

I look at the work of our leaders as both working 'in' the company (the tactical execution, the day-to-day activities) as well as working 'on' the company (the strategic initiatives, the big picture, defining and execution on the vision). I believe we are like most companies in that everyone tries to do both all the time, which is extremely challenging and generally not successful. The sprint concept is to take one week a month to focus 'on' the company and use the other 3 weeks doing work 'in' the company in order to to be more focused and efficient at both. I truly believe that this technique will work and that we are on the right path. We are simply running into new challenges along the way in our quest to be more disciplined and separate the 'in' and 'on'.

One of the next steps we are taking that we believe will help, and is certainly shedding more light on the task at hand, is to properly define those strategic initiatives through project scoping and planning. My guess is that most companies skip past this essential step and do not understand how significant the impact can be. We have just started this process, but I believe that this will be eye-opening and allow us to set better expectations on just how much can be accomplished alongside the tactical working 'in' the business.

So, we will continue our sprints, keep evolving our approach, and I will give updates on the progress as well as new challenges. Again, drop me an email if you want more details. And here's to warmer weather!

Sincerely,

null NewMicrosoftCompetencyLogo

Life Hack: Cellular Gateway

By Craig Rogne

The problem is that smartphones, as good as they are, can still have limitations. Charge limits, signal limits, or a ringer turned off and not turned back on. A great solution to help alleviate some of these issues is a Bluetooth Cellular Gateway, a simple device that offers people additional flexibility when using a smartphone. A Bluetooth Cellular Gateway is a device that will connect to your smartphone using a Bluetooth connection and will allow you to have your calls routed to other land line phones in your home.

RTC Personalization

By Joe Draeger

Personalization is one of the single most important features in the NAV RTC environment. The Role Tailored Client (RTC) is designed to give users everything they need right at their fingertips. Defining and assigning Role Centers is only the beginning of what you can do as a user to customize your pages to fit your needs.

The Magic of Calculating NAV Maintenance

By Joshua Arndt

In the 1950's the CEO of GM, Harlow Curtice, was reported to have said, "If a business is not moving forward it is falling behind".   In today's world that means adapting to the requirements of the mobile world.   Business has become increasingly aware that freeing staff from the constraints of the desk or office leads to better productivity.   Whether providing ways for sales people to be in front of the customer more or allowing managers to be on the production floor more, access to business data and systems is a requirement for this mobile world.   With the advent of tablet versions of NAV on many platforms, Microsoft is taking the lead in adapting a strong ERP system to provide consistent access to business systems.

Deciphering Simplicity with Wireshark and Fiddler

By Jake Vanderpuy

Everyone likes to keep it simple. Scintillating, I know! But today's modern bring-your-own-device enterprise network has lots of different devices, such as iPads, laptops, desktops, stand-alone VOIP phones, etc. Managing all these devices can be anything but simple because there are so many different implementations of protocols and services.

Cloud Based IT: It's a Matter of Trust

By Alan Wyne

The business world is now at a crossroads with business applications in the cloud. Everyone hears what the industry is saying about up times, redundancies, cost of ownership, ROI, and security but many companies are still not convinced. There is an underlying mistrust of the infrastructure and the security of the cloud. Everyone can recall when the internet connection was down. They see the stories on the news about data breaches, data being stolen, and companies being damaged by these security breaches. But is it accurate to blame these problems on the cloud?
