Greetings!

Happy summer!

I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable July 4th as well as enjoying summer (which finally arrived).  Once again our family was able to enjoy the Waupaca July 4th parade. For those of you who have not heard of this, it looks like a Norman Rockwell picture.  Years ago, Donavan Lane (our founder and owner) built a train from recycled barrels and pulls it with his riding lawn mower, delighting the kids that get to ride!

Even though our staff are spread out across a few states, enough of us attend each year that we fill the train with our kids and help hand out candy and freezee pops to the crowd.  My kids all had a chance to ride when they were younger but have graduated to walking and helping with the candy and freezee pops - and plenty of help is needed. We have 800 pounds of candy and 3,000 freezee pops!

It is quite a sight and such a neat experience - a great reminder that small efforts can have big impact.  I, personally, have seen how excited the children are to ride in the train, as well as even being in a parade.  The camaraderie amongst the staff, many of whom are spread out and don't typically see each other, is a great benefit.  The impact on the community is so rewarding - seeing the excitement in the kids' eyes with all the candy being thrown to them, and especially the "older" kids (parents and grandparents) so thankful for a freezee pop on a hot day.  Simply showing our patriotic support for our country is an honor for us to do.

I'd like to say thank you to Donavan for beginning this tradition, as well as encourage anyone reading this to look for opportunities to give back to your community.  I hope you enjoy the rest of your summer!

Sincerely,

Beyond Cortana: My Favorite Features of Windows Phone 8.1
By Jeffrey Pergolski

Since signing up as a Windows Phone developer and getting the bits to upgrade my Nokia Icon back in April, I've had plenty of time to decide if I like Windows Phone 8.1.  If you read my previous post, you know I'm a real fan of the added functionality and productivity enhancements that Cortana offers. But what about the rest of Windows Phone 8.1? Is there anything else there? Of course the answer to that question is "Yes" and here are my favorites:  Read More.

The Business Case for Windows Phone

By Ben Bolte

Let's face it, if you've had a Windows Phone historically you've been the red-headed step child of the smart phone family that's filled with iOS and Android siblings.  While the Windows phone is gaining some success globally the US market seems to have blinders on and is completely focused on Apple and Google.  Ironically, Microsoft was one of the first to the phone market but they were there before the users were.  When the adoption of users came Microsoft was late to the game and struggled to get anyone to take notice.

An App that Could Replace the Scanner
By Kristina Nor
OneNote has introduced an app that could replace the scanner in offices around the globe. I admit that that was a slight exaggeration, but this new application will definitely prove to be a great alternative when a scanner is not readily available.
Office Lens, which acts as a small scanner using nothing but the camera on your phone, is now available in the Windows Phone Store (the same functions are on the OneNote app for Windows 8 and iOS7). Read More.

Avoiding a Credit Card Data Breach: 5 Tips for Securing Your Data
By Karen Tran, ChargeLogic
The news of data breaches is a regular occurrence, raising concerns not only among consumers but among businesses that process credit cards. The Identity Theft Resource Center reports that there were 614 breaches in 2013, an increase of 30% from 2012. Of those breaches, approximately 15% exposed credit or debit card information. Included in that report are recognizable names like Target, Adobe, and Travelocity.  Protecting your business from a data breach takes a comprehensive approach. You can avoid the biggest vulnerabilities (as identified by Visa) by achieving PCI compliance and by following these tips. Read More
