On the Development Front:

At WSRF, like most independent schools, tuition does not cover the full cost of educating our students.  Every year about 30% of our operating budget is underwritten by contributions from generous parents, alumni, faculty, staff, grandparents and friends. We depend on the generous contributions of our donors to help meet our annual budget.

The Annual Fund provides supports a variety of needs, including:

  • Funding for teacher enrichment, salaries and benefits
  • Tuition assistance
  • Maintenance of our 13 acre straw bale, solar campus

... and many, many other needs.

In addition to the Annual Fund, here are some other to support WSRF:

  • Whole Foods Cards - available for purchase at the front office; 3% of each card comes back to the school.
  • Target Red Cards - register under "Aspen Waldorf Foundation."
  • City Market Cards - Please sign up at an upcoming Class meeting.
  • 2nd Hand Clothing Stores - WSRF has accounts at a variety of Valley second-hand children's clothing stores.  Please consider donating your child's old clothing, toys, books to help support Parent Council initiatives. Please bring donations to First Friday's Honey Bee Café.
  • Collect Box Tops and bring them to the front office!

Colorado Gives Day!

WSRF will be participating in Colorado Gives Day this December 10, 2013.  A statewide initiative, Colorado Gives Day raises awareness of philanthropy and non-profit organizations in Colorado.

We will have our own web page on the Colorado Gives site (www.coloradogives.org). WSRF families will also be able to create a personal family fundraising page, encouraging friends and family to support WSRF.  Last year Coloradans donated $15.4 million dollars in just 24 hours to nonprofits throughout the state.  Anne Menconi would love to work with you to set up your family page for Colorado Gives Day!

However your family chooses to support WSRF, thank you for helping to ensure that WSRF remains the vibrant, healthy center for Waldorf education that it is today.

From the Business Administrator

The office staff would like to thank all the parents who helped with the timely submission of the new All-in-one forms.  We appreciate your efforts in getting this to us quickly.  If you have yet to turn in your form, please do so promptly.

Traffic Flow and Parking

Please see the attached depiction of our parking lot here, and note the one way direction of traffic flow.  Vehicles entering the main entrance are to travel one way in front of the school and then around to the parking lot.  For the safety of all, please do not pull directly into the main parking lot.

To assure the smooth flow of vehicles, drop-off and pick up is permitted directly in front of the school when it can be accomplished quickly, otherwise please park your vehicle in the lot.  To drop off or pick up quickly, please pull your vehicle to the right side of the driveway and stop just before the crosswalk to drop-off or pick up.  Vehicles wishing to pull into the parking lot may proceed to the left of vehicles lined up on the right.

All vehicles traveling to the Kinderhaus are to proceed directly to the left when pulling into the main entrance, and around to the parking spots on the North side of the school.

Please also note the two disabled parking spaces and do not block these.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Parent Council Update

On behalf of Parent Council, we would like to welcome all parents this Friday morning, Sep. 6, to the Honey Bee Café. We'll be serving coffee drinks and chatting with friends in the Sunroom, just beyond the office in the big school.

The Honey Bee Cafe was started a few years back as a Friday morning coffee bar and was an excellent opportunity to get all jazzed up with coffee and chat with WSRF friends.  Parent Council has decided to bring it back on the First Friday of each month, thanks to the efforts of the grades school and the Oldham family: Nelson, Julie, Kate (6th grade) and Ben (2nd grade.)

The Oldhams, proprietors of Dos Gringos burrito and coffee bar, will be bringing their yummy strong coffee, and Nelson will make us all fancy coffee drinks to order from 8 - 9:30 AM.  Thank you for this wonderful gift, Oldham family!  The eighth grade parents are hosting this month's café by bringing complimentary, homemade baked goods.

For those of you new to WSRF, every Friday morning all the grades students gather in the eurythmy room for an informal assembly. Parents are welcome to attend, but please leave your coffee outside! So bring a few bucks for coffee, bring a friend, and see you this Friday!

Please check the WSRF website (www.waldorfschoolrf.com) for more activities sponsored by the Parent Council!

Finally, a reminder that Sunday, September 15th, Dos Gringos is hosting a Waldorf Night - an evening night when mom or dad doesn't have to cook but it feels like a dinner party anyway!   No need to RSVP - just head on down to Dos Gringos with your family on Sunday, September 15 at 5:30 for the best burrito around!  By the way, that's Blue Grass Night at Dos Gringos as well, so it's sure to be a lively night!  Thank you again to Nelson and Julie Oldham for your hospitality and generosity!

Sincerely,

Holly Richardson                   Dawne Vrabel

Weekly 'Calendar of the Soul' Readings

with Hartmut Schiffer:

Rudolf Steiner gave weekly verses that follow the ebb and flow of the seasons as well as the inner life of the soul of the human being called the Calendar of the Soul Verse. They are short verses with amazing depth. Many teachers and those interested in the anthroposophical path have taken up the reciting of these verses.

This year, Holly Richardson and Hartmut Schiffer, both former class teachers, would like to invite you to share with them a weekly reading and pondering of these beautiful verses together. Holly and Hartmut will be gathering in the Conference Room on Thursday mornings from 8:30 - 9:15 for a reading of the verse in German, an English translation, and an open conversation around the verse to ponder it's meaning.

Copies of Steiner's Calendar of the Soul are available to purchase online at the Rudolf Steiner College Bookstore website. It is recommended to read the verse to oneself prior to the gathering to squeeze the most juice out of these amazing verses.

Please contact Holly at holly@waldorfcarbondale.org or at 963-0140 with questions. Any and all are welcome to join Holly and Hartmut on this spiritual journey.

This weeks reading:

The Light from world-wide spaces

Lives on in me with strength;

It turns to light of soul

And shines into the depths of spirit

The fruits to liberate

Which in the course of time will ripen

The Self of Men out of the Self of Worlds.

Hartmut Schiffer came to the U.S.A.  in 1960 to become a Waldorf teacher. He has taught in numerous schools in Germany and Liechtenstein and as well as in the U.S.A. including Waldorf schools in Los Angelos, Sacramento, Washington, DC, San Diego, Denver, Maine, and here in Carbondale.  He has given to our school in many ways as a volunteer and has been a beloved member of our community here in Carbondale since 1999.

Exciting Schedule Changes for the 2013 - 2014 School Year!

After much study and careful consideration, we are instituting three important changes in our school schedule this year. These changes arise from the Pedagogical Planning process in which the Faulty engaged throughout the 2012 - 2013 school year.

Early Dismissal Day Changed to Wednesday
Early dismissal has been moved from Thursday to Wednesday. Dismissal on Wednesdays will be at 2:00. Other days of the week the dismissal time will still be 3:00. The start of school will still be 8:15 each day. This is a change we have instituted in response to the requests of some parents whose children participate in after school activities on Wednesdays. This will also bring our school into alignment with many of the other schools in the Valley who dismiss early on Wednesdays. In addition, this will support the teachers by providing an opportunity for full-faculty communication earlier in the school week.

Specialty Classes Changed from 40 Minutes to 55 Minutes:
Three Specialty Classes per Day and the Creation of "A" and "B" Weeks
Following in the footsteps of some other Waldorf schools, we are providing the students with time to go further into depth in each of their specialty classes by reducing the number of subjects they experience from four to three each day. By keeping the school hours the same, and with the creation of "A" and "B" weeks, the students will spend the same amount of time with their specialty subjects over the two weeks, but in a different format. In addition to greater depth within each period, this schedule reduces the frequency of transitions between subjects and classes. The students will still have morning and lunch recesses of the same length. The schools that have moved to this format have noticed not only an opportunity for greater depth in working with material, but they have also experienced a calmer atmosphere and fewer difficulties that arise between classes - we hope to experience the same!

Middle School Main Main Lesson Moved Later in the Day
Based upon our own experience, and research into the learning patterns of middle school students, we will begin the school day for grades 6 - 8 with a specialty class, ideally one better suited to their learning needs at that time of day. After an earlier snack and recess, main lesson will take place from 10:00 am. to 12:00 pm. Beginning at 12:00, their schedule will align with grades 1 - 5. By making this change, our striving is to support the middle school students by providing them with learning opportunities better structured to their learning patterns and needs.

Good Shepherd assistance for the Sakson Family

A dear friend of the school, longtime WSRF parent and devoted staff member is in need of our help. It is possible that many of you don't know our wonderful school cleaner Stevi Sakson. With great devotion and care she cleans the school in the wee hours of the morning like a magical house elf!

Stevi is also an alumni parent -- all three of her children, Jake, Sophie and Andra attended WSRF. This summer her children's father, Drew Sakson, suddenly passed away leaving Stevi solely responsible for her daughters' school and life expenses. Andra is hoping to continue at CRMS as a sophmore and Sophie is hoping to continue at Franklin College in Switzerland.

At this time the Sakson family needs financial support. Tuition deadlines are fast approaching and the continuation of their education is in question. In supporting Stevi and her children it's an opportunity for us to extend a full circle of love and support, giving back to her in the way she has so generously given of herself to our school.

In lieu of the typical Good Shepherd meals, which often cost $10-$30 and time to prepare, we ask that you will consider a monetary contribution to the Sakson's education fund. Contributions can be made to the Drew Sakson Children's Benefit Fund at Alpine Bank. Donations can also be left at the front office. Any amount is welcome and met with great gratitude.

Our cat China needs a home.  She is a ten year old Seal Point Siamese that we adopted from a shelter in New Hampshire when she was a kitten.  She is very affectionate with adults and older children, but is wary of small children.  She stays inside most of the time but likes to bask in the sunshine and roll around on the sidewalk on occasion.  She is healthy and all her shots have been updated.  She had an infected fat cell in her belly a few years ago and as a result has a saggy pouch that hangs down (it's pretty funny).    We are looking for a loving family to take her in.  If you are interested in adopting China or know of someone who is able and willing please call Sarah Jane at 970-404-2632.

Enzo Nastati Biodynamic Farming Method Seminars

Dates in the USA confirmed!

The dates for the two seminars with Enzo Nastati from Italy have been confirmed. The first will be in Paonia, Colorado from Oct. 10-14, 2013. The second will be at Foxhollow Farm near Louisville, Kentucky from Oct. 18-22, 2013.

For those unfamiliar with Enzo's research and publications, please visit

http://www.moodie.biz/enzobooks.html

Click on the Adobe Acrobat symbol to the left of the title for sample pages.

In these two seminars Enzo will give an introductory course into the Homeodynamic Method of agriculture. The Homeodynamic method was developed using Steiner's Biodynamic preparations as the basis and following Steiner's instruction to each and every one of us to develop these preparations and bring them into the future in an appropriate way considering the individual farm organism, the specific challenges of our region and locality, and the changing dynamics within the earthly and cosmic realms.

We have asked Enzo to place a specific emphasis on water vitalization and dealing with drought conditions as well as humus building.

Please respond to this email to receive a registration form which can be printed out and returned by mail to the appropriate location, either Paonia or Louisville. We encourage everyone to do this promptly both to help us with our planning and to secure a space. Because of the very special nature of this course, spaces will be limited to 35 at each location.

We are grateful to the Biodynamic Farming and Gardening Association for their support with this seminar both logistically and with some scholarships. Please apply directly to the Association through their website: https://www.biodynamics.com/scholarships

Please forward this email to others who may be interested.

If you have any problems with the forms, please contact Caren at adivg@skybeam.com. Many thanks for your patience and we hope you can all attend this very unique opportunity.
