INHIBITORY CONTROL: Stop & Go Fun Week 1 I hope our Village rituals are providing you and your little one a sense of belonging and security. From our hello song, intentional touch, exercise, rocking time, through quiet time, and our good byes, we are building a safe and loving community through our shared rituals. Today we shifted our musical focus to Inhibitory Control, or as we like to call it, "STOP & GO." In many of this week's activities we experienced the physical and musical sensation of stopping and going. By participating in activities that move and stop, your baby is developing the awareness of Inhibitory Control. In the next curriculum, Our Time, you will help your child to begin to learn to stop their bodies on their own - to choose self-control - to choose to listen to cues from music and from you. AMEN! DEVELOPMENTAL BENEFIT OF THE WEEK Self-Awareness, The Beginning of Self-Control
Inhibitory Control is one's ability to stop on a given cue and listen/change what they are doing even though they are enjoying it. This is the beginning of self-control. The brain sends out neural impulses to stop. "Stop" and "Go" were also reinforced this week in class with the use of ASL (American Sign Language). Signing stop is a visual cue that is priceless for both observer and kinesthetic learners, as it makes it easier to SEE and FEEL stop! Click here for Signing Savvy website. Research shows that children who continuously enroll in Kindermusik through their first 7 years of life have much greater self-control and academic abilities than those who never experienced Kindermusik or those who took Kindermusik for short periods of time. Click the link to read a summary of a George Mason University Study about Self-Control & Kindermusik. Read Below to discover how the development of your child's Inhibitory Control will be supported through your child's first 7 years of life in Kindermusik! SUMMER ONLINE RESERVATION It's Not Too Late - Click Here HOME ACTIVITY SUGGESTIONS 1) Complete your Home Journal Week #5 -"Shake, Rattle, Play & STOP!"
- Pot & Pan kitchen bands have been a long-time favorite of Kindermusik families. If you can find one door in your kitchen to leave unlocked, there is the potential for discovery every day as your child opens it and pulls out all of the old pans and wooden spoons you can find.
- GARAGE sales are great places to find these "used musical instruments" we call pots and pans. Your child will enjoy this activity from Village all the way through Our Time and beyond. We hear such incredible stories of how pot & pan play gets very sophisticated as children grow.
- Fabulous timbre exploration, auditory discrimination practice, early composition skills developed..
- Click here to go to Signing Savvy or ASLPro, our favorite Sign Language websites.
- If you would like to learn how to easily incorporate sign into your day while helping your little ones more quickly and prolifically learn "sign," then our summer camp "Sign & Sing" is for you! Written by the leading experts in early childhood sign language development, you are sure to provide your child with language skills that will help them through the frustrating years pre-expressive language, while spring-boarding their verbal communication skills as well. Registration forms can be found on the greeting table, or click here to enroll online today!
2) Click Here or one of the Fall Theme Logos below to read more about your fun
3) Continue to Listen - listen - listen to your RHYTHM CDYour child will be comforted upon entering the busy classroom if they are familiar with the "sounds of Kindermusik." THIS WEEK'S ADDITIONAL LEARNING POINTS FOR PARENTS DAILY RITUALS
"Daily rituals should reflect a family's values and nurture the emotions that matter the most to its members."
- Meg Cox, The Heart of the Family, p. 208.
Rhythm, the rhythm, the rhythm of our class! Rituals are such an important part of all our lives. The rituals associated with waking up, meals, nap, bath, and bedtime give your baby a sense of calm and confidence. Our baby learns to anticipate what will come next and this reassures him/her about many things in his world, especially that he/she is taken care of and loved. This security then "allows for exploration" knowing they have a safe place which to return.

SING, SING, SING!
Singing gives children the freedom to express themselves in unique ways. A child can immerse herself in a made-up song about rainbows, or a young boy can remember his mother by singing a favorite nighttime lullaby. Children socialize through songs and dance, learning how to interact with others through silly nonsensical song play. While you might not understand why your child wants to sing "B-I-N-G-O" or "Baby Beluga" fifty times in a row, at least you know that your child's singing will increase his/her communication and vocabulary, self-confidence and expressiveness.
DEVELOPMENTAL FOCUS
Benefit of Encouraging Childhood Singing
Click this link for an explanation of the Stages of Early Childhood Vocal Development. Interesting & Informative read!
Many toddlers will first attempt a word, phrase, rhythms pattern or vocal inflections while alone or at play. These imitations are called "approximation of singing" It is by "playing with sounds" that the children master the muscular feel of producing a singing sound and come to realize that they can produce these kinds of sounds which are different from speech. We model and encourage children to explore the upper or head voice and to employ their voice for singing tasks as much as possible. Playing with vocal glissandos, singing tasks like "Eggs Away", and pitching songs in the best range for young children help your child learn to become a successful singer. It's no surprise that Kindermusik kids can sing and are able to express themselves so well. The songs on your CD's are specifically arranged so that your child can hear and reproduce them in song, with limited ranges and in on notes they can actually reproduce.
In the next curriculum, Imagine That, many children are experiencing half-singing and half-speaking a few words at a low pitch. We provide opportunities to sing simple-tonal melodies and to sing individually without recordings or accompaniment, which helps your child sing more nearly at pitch level. Research has shown that individual and small-group singing activities have a positive effect on your little one's vocal development and competence. By the end of Imagine That class experience, most children can sing a sentence or a complete phrase at random pitch and many will already be matching pitch!

Cities! Busy Places - Friendly Faces!

INTEGRATED LEARNING
"I hear and I forget.
I see and I remember.
I do and I understand."
- Chinese Proverb
This week we were able to integrate musical terminology and concepts that we have been introducing this semester while adding additional concepts. Remember glissando from weeks 1-4? Now the children are moving, singing and playing instruments with:
dynamics: forte and piano; tempo: slow, fast, and accelerando
A fun new game was introduced this week to the children, Pass the Shoe, with each child contributing one of their shoes in order to play. The object of the game is for your child to "sing" and use their "right hand" and listen to the music and "wait" until the shoe lands in front of them, and then pass "with the beat" to the person on right. Oh - but that's not all - we pass on the beat and the beat gradually "gets faster and faster" (accelerando - pronounced ahchellerahndoh.) Oh - and that's not all either - as the children gradually learn to work in ensemble to manage a "One shoe" pass together, we then challenge them by adding in additional shoes until your child is passing on EVERY beat. At that point the tempo gets faster until we all break out in giggles and stop! SO FUN - and so educational! This game integrates:
- social/ensemble play
- listening to directions
- music cognitive discrimination of tempo
- physical coordination
- self-control
- singing ability

DEVELOPMENTAL FOCUS
INTEGRATED LEARNING
As a parent, I am sure you thoroughly understand the premise of the Chinese proverb above! Children often do not remember something when only told about it, and the experts agree that at this age children need to feel it to learn concepts. Seeing and, even more importantly, "doing," solidifIes your child's understanding. This is one of the reasons the Kindermusik curriculum is so completely integrated. For example, several approaches are used to instill an understanding of our musical concepts from this week: tempo and dynamics.
In summary, Integrated learning allows your child to grasp concepts through several learning methods and across the learning domains, including cognitive, physical, social, and musical. These concepts need to be CHALLENGED over and over through age 7. Young Child
is your child's important and final step in his/her early childhood development in Kindermusik. Those 2 final years in Young Child are priceless brain development that lasts for years to come.
Further integrated learning can take place at home. This week's Family Activity: "I am an architect - look at my city building," will allow your home play and our classroom play to integrate. We will be using your child's building(s) to build our classroom city next week. The city is filled with buildings for different uses and different inhabitants. Imagine That? Who lives in your child's building? Anyone?? What happens in your child's building?
Musical and Dramatic Enactment of a story is one way to expand your child's creative experiences by bringing together elements of guided imagery, music and movement, and the visual arts. Enjoy your play!
HOME ACTIVITY SUGGESTIONS 1) Week #12 Family Activity: "I am an architect. Look at my city building." P.15" -
Child's ideas, Siblings ideas, Parents ideas all merged! WOW - what you may come up with?
- What color, What size, What shape, What materials to use?
- Some have brought in complete cities in past classes after merging everyone's thoughts. We never know where your cooperative play will lead. FUN!
-
REMINDER: Bring building (or buildings) to next class.

PETER AND THE WOLF and more on our NEW NOTE "g"
We know it isn't always easy to get the kiddos to class each week. That is expected at this age. Early Childhood experts try to get the word out to parents of children ages 0-8 to "stay in charge."
We know that children at some point at this age go through a stage of wanting to have "their say" as to "what they will do and when they will do it." They want to be "in charge." This is a natural "test" through which children at this age put their parents, a natural growth moment for them. The true test of a parents decision for ages K-8 is "how the child responds in the classroom." We want to congratulate you on having shown your children that "you are the decision maker," and not giving up your important role of being "in charge." Way to stay strong. You are giving your young one a gift that lasts a lifetime by finishing out these very important final 2 years of Young Child. The minor challenges you face now will reap HUGE REWARDS later! I just want you all to know we feel that "gift" is ours as well!
Musical Pathways Kindermusik Mommy "Jill" whose child graduated from Kindermusik in 2010 has provided this story to help other parents struggling with their child to TRANSITION to class in the evening.
"I would have bet you a lot of money when we were in the first year of Young Child that my child would NEVER have said or acted like she did in the 2nd Year. We fought about going to class in so many ways in the first year - she just didn't want to go! You did say that in class she was enjoying herself and that it was just a stage. You told me that children at this age go through the stage of wanting control of their free time and their transitions, but that the experts say that children under age 7 don't know what is good for them. Well, I didn't believe you and I wouldn't if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes. All of a sudden my daughter was looking for her Kindermusik shirt because she was so excited about going to class, and then was so disappointed when we had a potential conflict. She LOVED it! Now she is taking piano and loving it. She came home from her piano lesson and practiced for an additional 50 minutes. It's amazing. If I had stopped when she wanted to stop, she would have missed out on a lifelong love of piano, and all of the benefits academically that come with private instruction."
As we near the end of the semester, I invite you to look ahead to next year and the many topics the children will cover in Young Child 3 and Young Child 4. They include: - Appalachian music
- African-American music
- Native American music
- Jazz Music of the Pacific Islands
- Music of Europe Music of Africa
- Music of Central and South America
- Basic components of jazz, tap, and ballet dancing
- More music notation (treble clef, half note, single eighth note, half rest, flat sign, sharp sign, etc.)
- Meter Signatures (4/4 and 3/4)
- Musical Forms (ABA, Rondo - ABACA)
- C Major Scale Ensemble playing and Improvisation
- Arranging Music
- Self-Confidence building to get prepare for future performing Piano, Dulcimer-Pre-String, Recorder-Wind integrated with your child's mind learns how to play all three within one class.
- Transitioning your child to Private Studio in Piano, Violin, and Voice
What an enormous amount of learning! Musically, the children also learn to play two more instruments: the dulcimer and the recorder. By the end of two years of Kindermusik for the Young Child, your child will have learned the rudiments of an instrument (the glockenspiel - a prekeyboard instrument) and how to transfer to piano, a stringed instrument (the dulcimer), and a wind instrument (the recorder). In the final semester in YC4 we will be able to transition your child to private instruction in piano, voice or violin (or a combination thereof).

1) MAH #28: "Sing & Celebrate"
- Sing on Note Names
- Play and Sing by memory
- 4-Part Ensemble next week. Enjoy
2) Peter and the Wolf Review - Food Restrictions Anyone?
In two weeks we will be having fun watching and identifying orchestral instruments in the movie Peter and the Wolf. If you would prefer your child to NOT have orange or apple juice or popcorn (no butter - just salt) please let me know, so that you can substitute your preferred snack during our Movie & Music Hour!
- Enjoy playing the "name game" 2 different ways this week:
- Character Side-up: "Which is the flute?"
- Instrument Side-up: "What character is the flute?"
- Sort & Review the 4 Families of the Orchestra: String, Woodwind, Brass, Percussion
- Review Instrument Names: Clarinet, Oboe, Bassoon, Flute, Violin, French Horn & Tympani (or Kettle Drum)
3) Two-Measure Compositions
- 1 measure = 4 beats", he/she can use as many as "8" notes if they were all assigned the "ti-ti" rhythm. FUN! Review: tah = 1 beat, sh = 1 beat, ti-ti = 1 Beat
- Encourage the use of the 4 notes your child now knows. "c", "d", "a", and "f"
- Encourage use of Dynamic Markings:"p" - piano (quiet)"f" - forte (loud)"<" - crescendo (gradually louder)">" - decrescendo (gradually quieter) NOTE: Dynamic marks are written ABOVE the staff
- Now that we know about emotion, perhaps your child can indicate:
- Happy: Fast, Bouncy or
- Sad: Slow, Smooth
- REMINDER: If you have time, please write and bring Your 2-Measure Melody to your Next Class
4) Your Final Year Is Coming This Fall!
The power of the final year of Kindermusik is amazing. It's what you've worked for years. We look forward to traveling the final path with you next year. If you think they can do well now, just wait until next year where they will have more musical knowledge than children entering high school, and in many cases "college." We will be guiding them to the appropriate "private studio" for instruction in piano, violin, voice or combination of the above next year. Studios in our area are CLAMMERING to get our graduates because they far surpass the children who begin taking piano at age 5 or 6. We are excited that we have the ideal transition to private studio right here at Musical Pathways Foundation with our Elite Artistry Private Studio. Like everything else at Musical Pathways, our Elite Artistry program is designed specifically for you and your child to thrive.

INTRODUCING THE MUSIC OF CENTRAL AND SOUTH AMERICA
We are nearing the end of our final semester of Kindermusik together, and I realize that you might have questions such as "What''s next?" As you continue to guide your child's future educational and cultural choices, I hope that you will remember the many benefits the arts, specifically music, can provide for your child.
Musical Pathways Foundation is excited that we now have the PERFECT NEXT STEP for your child! ELITE ARTISTRY: Private instruction in Piano, Violin and Voice or a combination thereof! These lessons are not ordinary lessons. We understand the importance of discovering your child's interest, and utilizing that interest to direct their learning. Where does your child's interest lay: History, Theory, Practicing, Reading New Music, Listening to Music, Going to Performances, Music Theory Puzzles, Performing for Others, etc. etc ? Don't worry - we will discover that and use that interest so they remain motivated on their instrument of choice.
Miss Katherine, Miss Marta, Mr. Heath, and Mr. Ed comprise our Elite Team, and they look forward to instructing your child, helping them to develop the love of their instrument for a lifetime!

HOME ACTIVITY SUGGESTIONS
1) Music At Home Card 58: Don Gato Part 1 and Twinkle Twinkle Rondo
- Enjoy playing Twinkle Twinkle Rondo: ABACA "C = Simple Melody on Recorder"
- Enjoy playing 4 Motives from Don Gato: Motives 1,3,4 on Glockenspiel and Motive 2 on Recorder
2) Consider and practice what your little one (or your family) might like to play or sing at graduation and be
prepared to list the title and who is playing what instrument on the "sign-up sheet" in two weeks.
I so enjoy hearing the children's arrangements for the entire family to play, We encourage you to help and guide your child's discovery of what they would like to play at our Fiesta Graduation Celebration. Your child can arrange a tune they know from class, one they have composed, or another tune they know. How about using one of your child's compositions in a Rondo form piece. Maybe the "A" section might be a favorite song of theirs they have played or sang. Maybe the "B" section can be there own measures of music on another instrument. Remember Rondo: ABACA, or even just ABA form would be fun! We have so much fun at our graduation ceremony when the entire familiy gets in on the fun! Giggles galore!
Example:
Brother plays a percussion instrument to the beat
Sister sings along
I play and sing on my glockenspiel or dulcimer or recorder
Mom plays along on an instrument she knows how to play (flute, clarinet, violin, etc.), or the piano or dulcimer or recorder.
Dad plays along on an instrument he knows how to play(flute, clarinet, violin, etc.), or the piano or dulcimer or recorder.
3) Reserve the Graduation Fiesta Party Date: June 6th 4:30 - 7:45 pm. Arrival time is 4:30 (vs. 4:15) Our Fiest Graduation Celebration is in the style of a true tradition of the Fiesta, where all families bring dishes to pass and help at the party. The sign-up lists will be at your class this week. Please let us know how you might help with this very fun family event. Be sure to invite relatives and friends to this fun affair!
4) Continue to listen to your CD!
