VILLAGE

The Rhythm of My Day

                              THE IMPORTANCE OF RITUALS!

Your time together in Village is 45 minutes of one-on-one time with your baby - a reprieve from the everyday direct care such as dinner time and bathing. In our busy lives, it is so easy to forget the POWER of such magical time together.  Research is showing that the lack of rituals is becoming THE MOST IMPORTANT topic in Early Childhood parenting.

I Love You Rituals by Becky Bailey is a fantastic resource!  I think it is worth reading even just for the first 56 pages. It opened my eyes to the ramifications of constant praise (not a positive ramification) and instead of praise she reports the importance of just noticing your child and vocalizing your observations. If you take the advice of the first 56 pages and then utilize your Kindermusik songs, finger plays and dances in your day, you have a perfect formula to give your child the BEST start in life.  Becky lists four basic goals of I Love You, See-Feel-Hear rituals:

Goal One: I Love You Rituals optimize your child's brain for success at school and in life.
Goal Two: I Love You Rituals increase your learning potential and effectiveness through touch.
Goal Three: I Love You Rituals create loving rituals that hold families together even through the roughest times
Goal Four: I Love You Rituals strengthen the bond between adults and children that insulate children form drugs, violence, and peer pressure laying the foundation for mental and emotional health.  Discipline made easy!

I love to have Dancing Together as the Beginning of the NIGHTTIME STEP-DOWN RITUAL. It triggers the beginning of a series of activities that lead to bedtime slumber in a joyful and loving way.

  • Begin with a Dance:  Sing Sing Together
  • Follow the dance with a MANIPULATIVE ACTIVITY like our Jingle Go The Baby Bells we did earlier,
  • Then a LAP BOUNCE like our What Will I Do With My Baby-O
  • To READING TIME with our new book Rhythm of My Day (Insert your own pictures)
  • To ROCKING TIME like our Golden Slumbers

Committing these 10-12 minutes of loving RITUAL time together will rid you of many an issue now and later in life!

THIS WEEK'S ADDITIONAL LEARNING POINTS FOR PARENTS

BAREFOOT IS BEST
Barefoot is best for Baby.  Baby learns so much about the world through touch.  The skin on the bottom of the feet is especially sensitive, allowing lots of sensory input for Baby.
-Anne Green Gilbert, interview by Kindermusik International, 1997

BONDING BETWEEN ADULT AND BABY
The human face is of great interest to babies, especially to infants.  The eyes, eyebrows and mouth fascinate them and keep their attention.  Being in position to focus on the adult's face helps your Baby feel calm and secure and can foster bonding between Adult and Baby.

INTENTIONAL TOUCH COACHING
1) If Baby begins to vocalize or fuss during the intentional touch activity, try taking a deep breath and relax your body.
2) Try to make eye contact with Baby.  This can be reassuring to him/her.  Some babies prefer a firm but gentle physical touch for their calming.
3) Observe Baby's mouth and eyes, as well as body language for cues as to ways to help him/her relax.

FINE MOTOR FUN!

Multi-sensory Learning Environments - those that are rich with sensory experiences, allow freedom to explore, and have engaged parents - increase the potential for learning and are the "three major factors...(that) lead to competency in adulthood."

- Smart Moves, by Carla Hannaford

"The brain pays closer attention to things that don't fit an established pattern.... Anything new causes the body to release adrenaline, and adrenaline acts as a memory fixative."

**Start Smart!: Building Brain Power in the Early Years, by Pam Schiller

According to a leading brain researcher, Arnold Scheibel, "Unfamiliar activities are the brain's best friend." We know that routine and familiarity are conducive to learning because they allow a child to relax and focus without stress, and also to strengthen newer neural pathways by wrapping myelin around the sheath.   However, the unfamiliar is also important for developing new skills, as new neural pathways are created.

ADDITIONAL VALUE FOCUS INFORMATION

Multisensory Allows for New

SEE, FEEL/TOUCH/MOVE, and HEAR are the senses which are most often integrated into a Kindermusik class, allowing your child to explore both the NEW and FAMILIAR .  Smell & Taste we achieve on occasion, but are more difficult to bring into the classroom environment.   These senses can be integrated into your home play much more easily. The key to integrated learning is to combine the senses at the same time!

HEAR:  Every activity in class was a "LISTENING" activity with a focus on Sound and appeals to our Auditory learners while also combining with movement and sight.

FEEL/TOUCH/MOVE: Your child used the sense of "TOUCH/FEEL/MOVE" during every activity from  instrument play-along, our circle dance, being moved in our Hello song, Listening time, Story time, Lap Bounce and more . . .

SEE:  In each of the activities, your child is exposed to SEEING others, seeing new instruments, manipulatives, movements, printed words, etc.

VISUAL ARTS IN EDUCATION

"Rote memorization of a set of numbers is meaningless" (Moore, 1973, p. 67).

One thing we have been incorporating in our class musical play is the development of your child's one-to-one correspondence skill.  The children have counted how many times they sang the word 'eat' in Apples and Bananas, and today we counted how many tolls of a bell they heard, and how many blocks they used,  the number of preps in picking up our blanket.etc.

A child can begin counting as early as late one year of age. However, "Rote memorization of a set of numbers is meaningless" (Moore, 1973, p. 67). There is a difference between the act of counting that is a rote activity and the act of counting when "one-to-one correspondence" is understood. Read on to learn how to continue building your child's math skills . . .

DEVELOPMENTAL FOCUS

MATH SKILLS:  ONE-TO-ONE CORRESPONDENCE

One-to-one Correspondence is the ability to assign numbers and understand that each number counted corresponds with an object, and to be able to match one set of objects to another set of objects. Along with Basic Numeracy and Conservation skills, the understanding of One-to-One Correspondence is necessary before your child can carry out meaningful counting and higher calculations. This is an important concept because it is the basis for understanding mathematics.

For example, you will often see a preschooler be able to count to 100, but when you place a set of objects in front them scattered in a circle, they have difficulty counting them (matching the number to the object - hand touch to counting). Another fun thing to watch children learn is to have your child count a set of ten objects that have been placed in a tight circle first. Then place those same 10 objects in a much larger circle and ask your child "are there more or less items." Many preschoolers who have not yet learned One-to-One Correspondence and Conservation skills will answer, "MORE." Count away, using one-to-one correspondence for the fun discovery that there are exactly the same number of objects as the first time.

Since music is fun and allows us to expand on activities and therefore learning, in class we use finger counting and resonator bar ringing to sounds as well as objects to reinforce one-to-one skills. Finger counting works well because it is a concrete experience that is both physical and visual, so it easily demonstrates the relationship of numbers from 1-10 to objects(or sounds) being counted  See the Home Activity Suggestions below for more  one-to-one correspondence fun!

 HOME ACTIVITY SUGGESTIONS

1) Week #8 Family Activity: "I am a mathematician. I can count sounds and objects with my fingers." P.11

  • How many times does the microwave buzzer beep?
  • Is there a clock at home that chimes on the hour?
  • How many chimes can you play on your Kindermusik Resonator Bars?
  • Number an egg crate and drop in the matching number of buttons (at right)

2) Luckily you can find many opportunities in your child's daily life to experience One-to-One Correspondence:

  • How many socks do you have on?  How many shoes? Can you put one sock inside each shoe?
  • Can you get a napkin for each family member? How many family members at the table? How many napkins
  • While making a Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich: How many jars? How many lids? Can you put a lid on each jar?

3) Here is how you can extend the set of activities above by adding "music."

  • After you count the socks - you play the resonator bars that number of times counting aloud - same with shoes.
  • After you set the table and match up the people set with napkin set you play the resonator bar that number of times counting aloud.
  • Count the lids and jars and play your resonator bars, matching the number of sounds to the number of lids and jars.

4) Click here for more FUN CORRESPONDENCE GAMES, and more info as well. Games summarized below.

  • One Fish, Two Fish, Three Fish, Clown Fish
    - This is a fabulous one-to-one correspondence game that includes tremendous "fine-motor" dvelopment as well.  FUN!
    • The Fishing Game - To prepare the game, draw and cut out a number of fish. On each fish write a number between 1 and 10 or draw a number of dots. Place a paperclip over the mouth of each fish and tie a magnet to a piece of string. Children take turns rolling a ten-sided die or pulling a number from a bag and then fishing for a fish that matches that number.
    • The Picket Fence - Trace around Paddle Pop sticks to create a picket fence. On the palings of the fence write the numbers you are teaching e.g. 1-10 or 10-20. Write a corresponding number onto each Paddle Pop stick. Have the children place the Paddle Pop sticks onto the corresponding fence palings to build their fence. When the children become more confident, draw a fence that is not numbered and have the children place the Paddle Pop sticks onto the fence in the correct order.
    • The Mystery Box - In a shoebox, place a set of cards numbered 1-10. For each card place a matching number of objects e.g. 1 feather, 2 pencils, 3 bottle tops etc. The children group the matching objects together and then label the groups with the numbered cards. Change the objects regularly to keep children motivated.

EXPLORING ECHOES and THE NEW NOTE "f"

VALUE OF SINGING

"Singing is a child's most direct form of musical experience. ...In a sense,

when we sing, we become the music. This immediacy is becoming

less and less available in other musical experiences, in which the music is performed for us

by professional musicians or is mediated by electronic means."

 *Songworks 1, by Peggy D. Bennett and Douglas R. Bartholomew, p. 8.

Such fun we had singing this week!

  • Ten in the Bed is a favorite, with easy repetitive phrases, fun gestures, and even a glockenspiel part to play!
  • Mouse Mousie is a rollicking singing game-played with gusto!
  • Circle Round the Zero is a great Partnering game with timed movement.
  • Che Che Koolay is a longtime favorite echo song and echo game of children from Ghana, Africa, requiring focus/concentration, singing, movement. TERRIFIC!

Sing, sing, and sing this week!  When you & your child are PLAYING with the Home Activity Card, have them sing the melodies on note names and memorize them before playing and singing on the glockenspiels. Help encourage your child's singing through example. Let them see you singing on note names and then playing the glockenspiel while singing the note names. Research shows that you are your child's best teacher and your example is PRICELESS!!!!!!

HOME ACTIVITY SUGGESTIONS

1) Music At Home Card #24 - "Singing and Playing and More . . ."

  • Mouse Mousie: Sing and memorize your two Mouse Mousie phrases on "note names" and then play and sing on the glockenspiel.
  • Che Che Koolay and Circle Round the Zero: Enjoy singing and doing the motions together to these fun movement songs.
  • Ten In The Bed
: Enjoy taking turns with your child playing the "C-A-F" pattern on the glockenspiel when you sing "roll over."

2) Watch this great African Music Dance Video

3) Write a "2 Measure" Composition this week

  • 1 measure = 4 beats", he/she can use as many as "8" notes if they were all assigned the "ti-ti" rhythm. FUN!   Review:  tah = 1   beat, sh = 1 beat    ti-ti = 1 Beat
  • Encourage the use of the 4 notes your child now knows. "c", "d", "a", and "f"
  • Encourage use of Dynamic Markings:"p" - piano (quiet)"f" - forte (loud)"<" - crescendo (gradually louder)">" - decrescendo (gradually quieter)
  • Now that we know about emotion, perhaps your child can indicate:
    • Happy:  Fast, Bouncy or
    • Sad:  Slow, Smooth
  • REMINDER:  Bring Your 2-Measure Melody to Hang on Wall for Next Class

Just a little reminder that arrival @10 minutes before class if possible is your best bet.  Plenty of time for a potty stop prior to class, and for the children to get their wiggles out!  Class entry time @2 minutes prior as a group is an important piece of your child's classroom success.  The extra  "5 minutes" allows plenty of time for warm-up and transitioning for your child.  We understand that circumstances do not always allow you to arrive 10 minutes before class, but we appreciate your efforts in general.

Semester 4

AFRICA (WEEK 2)

This week we focused on the music of the African continent, discussing the importance of music and dancing in many African cultures. The children learned that percussion instruments are of particular importance in the rich African music heritage, and practiced organized drumming. We looked at pictures of and listened to instruments called the sansa, axatse (pronounced "ah-hot-say"), and bata. Be sure to watch the African Dance/Singing YouTube link in the Activities section below.

We enjoyed watching the children's faces light up as we began singing a favorite Ghanaian song from last year, "Che Che Koolay." Use of music from varied world traditions opens ears to a world of sounds we might not otherwise hear. At the same time, the familiarity of this particular song provides the children with a sense of well-being, comfort, and confidence!
