Musical Pathways Foundation

Newsletter February 11 - 17

                 Heart & Motto Transparent

Dear (Contact First Name),

This week a veteran parent who has been with the Foundation for years asked,

Isn't the Parent Orientation

just for New Parents joining this semester?

The answer,

The Parent Orientation is for EVERYONE

who has yet to have the chance to attend.

New parents and Veteran parents alike!

This meeting is a once-in-your-Kindermusik lifetime attendance.

Even if you have attended, your spouse or  new

                                                      babysitter/nanny may benefit.

Our PARENT ORIENTATION is offered once each semester.  This Sunday, the Spring orientation will be held upstairs in the "FIREPLACE" Gathering Place, from 2-3:30 pm.  Babysitting will be supplied to those unable to find a sitter.  Please let Miss Andrea know if you would like us to watch your little one, as we will want to provide adequate coverage.  We have so much exciting information we want and need to share.  The classroom experience - as you know- does not allow us the leisure of chatting during class.   We will discuss the philosophies at the heart of Kindermusik, and show you how we plan to accomplish Total Child Development with your child from now through First GRADE in our music and movement program.   You will also learn about our other Foundation offerings, including our unique Elite Artistry program which is the next private studio step for your child after Kindermusik graduation.  You also will get a chance to meet the staff, and get to know us a little better individually and as a team.  Our team always enjoys the meeting as well!

Have a Musical Week!

Hickory Dickory, Tickle & Bounce

              LANGUAGE:  ASL & PHONEMES

Throughout Hickory Dickory, Tickle and Bounce, you will learn various signs in American Sign Language.  New research shows that even hearing children who learn sign language know more words than hearing children who don't know sign language. Typically babies are ready to respond to signs at around six to nine months of age, but they may be recognizing signs as early as four months. They can begin to sign and talk to you as early as six months of age!  Now that's exciting!

As you go through your day, you may be surprised how often you can incorporate the signs we've explored thus far: "Book," "Love," "You," "Where," "Up," and "Down." Watch closely and you may find that your baby creates new signs for things such as "all done," "more," "sleepy," and others.

Our signing class, "Sign & Sing" by Kindermusik, will be offered two times this semester, and our first session begins this coming Monday at Noon.  The five-week session is supplemental to your Kindermusik class, and we offer a $15 discount to families already enrolled in our program.   We would love for you to take advantage of this incredible signing curriculum that will teach you how to quickly and prolifically teach sign language to your little one.  Click Here to email Miss Andrea of your interest.

And how about the Phonemes we explored this week?  The benefits of singing with phonemes are numerous when it comes to developing early language with your baby. A phoneme is the smallest unit of sound in language (e.g. a vowel and a consonant).  We usually use our voices to speak, and that is the primary way your baby hears your voice. But she uses her voice in many other ways, such as crying, cooing, and babbling.  By humming and making different animal sounds, you encourage your child's vocal skills, giving him/her assurance to explore the different ways she can use her voice.  Ah - budding young singers and speech-makers!   Animal sounds make great "first words" for your baby, and Mother Goose supplies a plethora of animals.. By listening to you, your child may try to make those sounds as well. So go ahead, make your own animal sound. If anyone asks, say that you are just being a GREAT PARENT!

Baaah for now! Ha!

THIS WEEK'S ADDITIONAL LEARNING POINTS FOR PARENTS

VISUAL SPATIAL SKILLS:   Come Along and Dance with Me!
The more experiences your child has with movement, the better his/her brain can interpret and integrate sensation from her eyes and body.  Later on, these visual-spatial skills will manifest in Baby when she:  - Can match shapes, letters, and numbers. - Can pick out objects in the fore- and background. - Has developed spatial awareness and an awareness of form constancy, directionality and position in space.
- The Out-of-Sync Child, by Carol Stock Kranowitz, M.A., pgs. 112-118.

BABY GAMES:   Peek-a-boo
Peek-a-boo is a favorite game of babies everywhere.  Pat-a-cake is another.  What other games toes your baby enjoy?   Why not share a game at next weeks Gathering Time.  FUN!

WHEN TO START & WHEN TO STOP:  La Cucaracha
"Offer an activity when your child is alert, calm, and in a good mood. . . . Offer something new when current interest lags.  "It is also important to know when to stop an activity.  "Watch the child closely.  Young children, especially infants, have a limited tolerance for stimulation and new things.  When the infant looks away for more than a moment, turns his/her head to avoid, drools excessively (not teething), or seems less 'together,' it is time to stop. Let the child set the pace."
- Simple Steps, by Karen Miller, pg. 11.

RELAXATION:  Quiet Time:  Cuddle Up a Little Closer, Lovey Mine
Relaxation is a learned behavior.  Setting aside this time each week not to be engaged in an active, thinking activity helps Baby learn to enjoy quiet play and learn that quiet, relaxed moments can include times other than nap time and bedtime.

AUDITORY & VESTIBULAR SYSTEMS:  Hickory, Dickory, Tickle and Bounce
The auditory system and vestibular system work together and are both processed in the ear.  The more opportunities a child has to process vestibular information (e.g. by being moved in a variety of ways in this activity), the better he/she is able to differentiate sounds and discriminate sound and language.

OUR TIME

Fiddle-dee-dee

THE DOMINANCE FACTOR

"Happiness is a warm puppy."  - Charles Schulz

Welcome to Our Time Class this spring and a whole new unit filled with songs and animal friends that are designed to engage you and your child in fun learning and educational musical play.  Have you noticed that it seems like your child is ALWAYS moving? "Movement is the Key to Learning!" We embraced that in class today and will continue to do so in the weeks to come. From birth to age seven, children learn primarily through their senses and movement. Kindermusik Our Time provides varied movement experiences, encouraging your child to learn by moving in class and at home.

This week in class we focused on the movement concept of tempo: As children develop, they learn all the ways their bodies can move, and one important aspect of this movement is speed. In our fast-paced world, children don't often have opportunities to explore slow movement. To that end, we explored "tempo" in several different ways. We bounced fast and slow to our lap bounce, "Dog Went to Dover," explored fast and slow one-bell jingles, and we pretended to be dogs during "Walk Along Rover" and varied the tempo between walking, rolling and wagging.  We learned to move our bodies in new ways using the Movement Chart and then varied the tempo during the Lento y Rapido song.  Lastly we danced to our Fast and Slow Circle Dance, Jing Jang.  We are building your child's vocabulary while we're learning to move.   In addition, we're developing an understanding of the difference between fast and slow - that's cognitive development!  Integrated learning is a powerful tool that we will use each and every week in class!  How exciting that it happens to be GREAT FUN too so your child will be able to use both hemispheres vs. just their Dominant hemisphere.   For more, read on . . .

ADDITIONAL VALUE FOCUS INFORMATION

Moving to Learn  - Using Tempo

Research to consider:

1) Our brains fully develop through movement activities such as crawling, rolling, turning, walking, skipping, reaching, swinging, and much more!  The brain has a plan for development that involves specific and intensive motor activities to make full use of our complicated nervous system."  - "Movement and Music:  The Keys to Learning," by Anne Green Gilbert, Kindermusik Notes Nov. /Dec. 1998

2) Paring language with movements sets the stage for cognitive and kinesthetic learning.  The right hemisphere of the brain is our emotional side where much of our creativity is channeled.  The left hemisphere organizes logical skills, such as language.  When children are engaged in movements determined by the lyrics, the brain automatically cross references both hemispheres, mapping creativity and logic.  (Fishburne, G. 1988)

3) When we ask your child to play along or dance along to an activity that has both FAST & SLOW sections, your child will not only learn what the term tempo means, but your child will be learning to control their movements and match their movements to an external sound source.  This is high level cognitive functioning.   Keep up the fun play grownups!

7-Year Continuum: How Kindermusik fosters your child's development using Tempo

Village: Those of you who have taken Village, experienced moving your child to different tempi to make it easier for your child to recognize the difference between fast and slow.

Our Time: In our class now, we will introduce and model a variety of new movements to your child, both fine and gross motor, because he/she learns through imitation. The 2-3.5 year-old child is learning to move his/her body in new ways that foster physical development, inhibitory control, and self-esteem. Tempo adds the excitement of contrasting FUN!

Imagine That: Children ages 3.5-5 years will then use their creativity and freedom of expression to suggest and create new movements and new labels to match. We invite this creativity and include turn-taking so that each child's idea can be considered and enjoyed! Plus, we will begin to label musical concepts such as tempo and accelerando.

Young Child: In Young Child for ages 5-7, we will use movement concepts like tempo to introduce musical concepts that we will transfer to instruments during ensemble play and to paper as we learn the written language of music.

 HOME ACTIVITY SUGGESTIONS

1) Continue to listen to your new CD's

Listen to Tracks 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 11, 12, 13, 14, and 25. . If you have an iPod or MP3 player, you can make a playlist and loop these songs.  Love new technologies!

2)  Enjoy playing with your new Doghouse - Make a Doggy Door for your little one's stuffed animal
What a great way to extend the play at home.  All Stuffed animals are welcome! This little doghouse will amuse your little one for hours on end, and you can take turns "singing Bow-Wow-Wow" at the same time.

3) Walk/Run/Roll/Wag with your little one this week to "Walk Along Rover" on your CD

This is great repetition of a new skill introduced in class - tempo.  The bonus is that it has great cognitive benefits of form and patterning and spatial awareness

Cities! Busy Places - Friendly Faces!

           THE DOMINANCE FACTOR

I hope you and your child left the first class of Cities! Busy Places ~ Friendly Faces as energized as we were  The combination of singing, movement, instrument play, and pretend play certainly is a favorite for one and all at this level.  Our classroom was a busy place as we visited the pretend city-full of sights, sounds, and fun-educational experiences.

                                                    DEVELOPMENTAL FOCUS

THE EMOTIONAL PROFILE OF THE 3-5YEAR OLD

                                                             SEPARATION ANXIETY INFORMATION

The preschool child is learning to be self-sufficient in a group setting of peers, while many times still needing the affirmation and emotional security provided by you, the parent. Children at this age are at various stages of comfort when separating from parents or caregivers; some children may need their adults with them a bit longer than others as class begins, and maybe they may even need you to STAY WITH THEM for the entire class. This is perfectly fine!  We want to honor each child's needs and help them to build rapport and trust in their ongoing emotional journey.  Remember a common exit strategy is:  Parent In the Circle Participation, Parent Outside the Circle Watching, Parent Watching from Wall, Parent Exiting.  Parent and teacher as partners can work together to develop the best plan for each individual child where separation anxiety is a concern.

In order to be available for your child should he/she need a reassuring glance or hug during the their time alone in class, we recommend that adults remain in the hall waiting area just outside the door.  This is particularly important at the start of the semester, when the children are just learning what to expect from our weekly class routines.  Note:  Children, who adjusted to the separation by the end of last semester, may need to repeat the adjustment process again this semester as new stimuli and new classmates are present. That's not only ok, but it is very normal!

 HOME ACTIVITY SUGGESTIONS

1)  Week #1 Family Activity: "I am a game player. Look at all the ways to play my city game!" P.4

For information on the Game Board, first read Family Activity #1 on page 4 of the Family Activity Book
  • I know your child will be eager to play with your new Game Board Set at home this week. See page 26 for a listing of ways to play your "CITY GAMES."
  • Your "CITY GAME BOARD" can be found on Pages 24-25, our "CITY SONGS" can be found on Pages 27-37
  • Feel free to play any or all of the games listed. However, you might find that the Match It Up! - City Faces gamewill help familiarize your child with the theme of this semester's unit. In this game you will match pictures on the cards to pictures on the Game Board.
  • Another great game to play at the beginning of the semester is the Listen and Match - City Sound game. This game uses your Home CD and asks you and your child to match the "sounds" on your CD to "pictures" on your game board.

NOTE: Please ignore the "reminder' to bring resonator bars back to class next week. We will distribute them during class next week.

2)  Read Social-Emotional Profile and Games document above and consider whether you would like to chat with your educator regarding the specific needs of your child/family
.

3) Continue to listen to your new CD's

Listen to Tracks 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 11, 12, 13, 14, and 25

4) Practice your I LOVE YOU RITUAL together at home.

  • Reminder: 3 Elements:  Eye Contact, Touch, Poem or words specific to this moment of reentry (versus "I Love You" or other phrases used generally).
  • Discuss when you will do this ritual (upon your reentry to the classroom.)
  • Chat about how excited you will be to hear all about what happened during their playtime while you are out of the room, etc.
  •

     YOUNG CHILD

    Semester 2

    MUSIC FOR SPECIAL TIMES

We discovered that there are many songs that relate to special occasions and times of year today.  Our class this week was full of fun and games-literally-with lots of learning mixed in! Children just love the Musical Baseball game. When each child came up to "bat," he or she received a pitch (drew a melody card) and had three chances to either sing or sing & play the melody(1-2-3 strikes your out at the Old Ball Game).  Little did they know that they were honing their integrated skills while playing a team game!

    • Single = Sing or Play
    • Double = Sing and Play

An important concept explored today was the concept of dynamics-the term which refers to how loud or quiet music is. Several activities dealt with identifying loud (forte) and quiet (piano) sounds.

     HOME ACTIVITY SUGGESTIONS

    1) Music At Home Card 17

    • Music at Home 17 offers some creative ways to explore dynamics with the glockenspiel and objects you can find at home
    • Please - please - please listen to the YC2 CD.  Many of the children were struggling with singing our new songs and they indicated they had not listened to the CD.  Listening to the CD creates an "EASE" in the classroom that your child will enjoy.
    • REMINDER:  Search for 2 objects in the home to bring to class next week: one that makes a piano sound and one that makes a forte sound.  Have fun searching!

    2) Play "Musical Baseball" together - Click Here for a Complete Description of this fun game!

    3) How about writing a "c-a" composition this week with Dynamics!

    • Draw the staff (5 lines and 4 spaces)
    • Write a 4-beat melody using "c" and "a"
    • Indicate your dynamic marking for each note as either "f - forte" or "p-piano"

     YOUNG CHILD

    Semester 4

Music of the Pacific Islands and Japan

Today we began our adventure to the Pacific!  The rhythms of the Pacific allow us to explore more complex ensemble play, while incorporating our newest instrument as we grow our piano and percussion skills as well.

The children were very excited today to learn the note a' on their recorders! And not only did they learn to play the a', it was incorporated into a special story they are learning to tell with music accompaniment. This story, Momotarosan, is a Japanese folk tale about a brave and generous little boy. Through the telling of the story with instruments, your child learns to watch a conductor (me), listen for a cue, play in an ensemble with specific rhythmic patterns, and focus her attention on one activity for several minutes - even when his/her part is not engaged.  Priceless focused-attention!

     HOME ACTIVITY SUGGESTIONS

    1) Prepare the Momotarosan melody on Glockenspiel

    • REMINDER:  Children will sing & play on note names for me during warm-up next week.

    2) Review RHYTHMS & NOTE NAMES

    • Many children thrive with this review: Name of symbol?, Name of pitch/note?, How to Count?
    • Can you make it a fun game?  Here is an idea called "MATCH GAME":

-Make up a set of cards with one Note Name on each card:  a,b,c,d,e,f,g

    -Make up a set of cards with one Count-value on each card:  1/2, 1, 2, 3, 4

-You will need your Note-tote rhythm symbols:   Eighth-note, Quarter-note, Half-note, Dotted-Half-note, Whole-note, Quarter Rest, Half Rest, Whole Rest.

-You will also need a staff which you can either draw or make on your floor using masking tape.

-Place a note from note-tote on the staff.  Your child chooses matching cards from the "count" and the "note name" cards.

-Place a rhythm from the note-tote on the staff.  Your child chooses the matching card from the "count" cards.

    3) Transfer a portion of the Mallet Dance melody - or the entire melody - to a keyboard.

    • "c" is the WHITE key just to the left of  "2 BLACK KEYS."
    • Now say your musical alphabet to find out where the keys are in your song.  a-b-c-d-e-f-g

    4) Help your child review the proper way to hold and play the recorder.

    • Practice speaking the "too" sound before actually playing into the mouthpiece!
    • Pick up with Right Hand on the bottom "foot joint" first, and then Left on Top joint.
    • Please read Music at Home 46 for more ideas on how to begin with the recorder.
    • This is a very important week for your child.  Play - Play - Play (take turns with your child)
    5) Review rhythms.  How about making your own flashcards for the note and rest symbols.

    6)  Click here to go to "play.kindermusik.com" and download your Lyric/Activity Packet and Free Songs

    7) Continue to listen to your new CD!!   Burn copies for bedrooms, cars, etc.

    8) Review proper holding of mallets and play Mallet Dance together.
