Why is Sharing Important?
Sharing is a vital life skill. It's something toddlers and children need to learn in order to make friends and play cooperatively. Once your child starts having playdates and going to child care, preschool or kindergarten, he'll need to be able to share with others.
Helping your child learn to share? Children often take their cues from what they see their parents doing. When you model sharing and turn-taking in family life, you give your children a great example to follow, and our Kindermusik Activities highlight turn-taking every week, so that you won't have to work so hard to figure out how to model this important skill!
DEVELOPMENTAL BENEFIT OF THE WEEK
Turn-Taking
Kindermusik class is an excellent place for your child to learn and practice this skill - we all understand how difficult waiting can be for a toddler/preschooler! So many of today's activities offered turn-taking experiences: Our Time Hello, Milk & Cookies- Bell Exploration Warm-up, Milk & Cookies- Wood Exploration while rotating taking turns at buckets, Cupcake Walk, Listening Timer & Ding with Children's imitation, Lead Through that Sugar and Tea Walk, Goodbye stamp and more. Each child waited his/her turn in these activities. Does it surprise you to see the list of just how many activities today involved turn-taking? Well, you are not alone. Sometimes it even surprises us educators as to the depth of planning and scope of childhood development that is written into the Kindermusik curricula. It just feels like FUN and that's the real key! Integrated Learning through play. Since turn-taking is a learned skill, it is something that needs repetition and encouragement from ages 1-7. Whether your child can already share with another child, share the bucket, or not share at all yet, just know that thru repetition with your child, you will bring him/her one step closer to having turn-taking skills be something he/she will enjoy for life. Don't give up, but continue encouraging and teaching this skill. Keep looking for ways to make "sharing with another person" a FUN idea! (e.g. saying "trying a new instrument is exciting - you never know what sound it will make?", or "look at Susie's instrument - I wonder what sound that would make - it looks fun?") Click here for a 2-page document on TURN-TAKING Teaching Tips provided by an Early Childhood Services team that works specifically with SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT. "Games" and "Storytelling" are the two key ways to help your child develop turn-taking skills. You will note in the document, how "right on" the interactive Kindermusik games we play here support learning that skill and much more.

IMAGINE THAT
Hello Weather, Let's Play Together!
|
Knock Knock - Who's there? "Laughter increases white blood cell activity and changes the chemical balance of the blood. This is believed to boost the body's production of chemicals needed for alertness and memory. Laughter reduces stress, and low stress enhances the brain's receptivity to learning. According to researchers, laughing also boosts the body's immune system for three days - the day of the fun and the next two." - Start Smart! Building Brain Power in the Early Years, by Pam Schiller, P. 47.-
DEVELOPMENTAL FOCUS
Learning through Play is a Laughing Matter!
The integrated nature of the Imagine That! curriculum is one of its many strengths. What makes Kindermusik unique? What does it offer that is not readily available in other typical activities for 3-5 year old children? What do the experts say is CRITICAL for learning at this age that isn't present in the majority of activities offered for this age group? See some comments from Experts below:
-Strong and consistent involvement of the parent with the child in class and at home, not only as a chauffeur, audience member, purveyor of refreshments or washer of uniforms and costumes.
-Child-centered with concentration on the WHOLE child versus a specific skill. Integrated approaches which utilize many senses and mediums are most effective for the young child.
-The best educational practices for the preschool-aged child are included: pretend play, ownership of learning, problem-solving approaches, and an emphasis on the development of social skills.
Kindermusik provides all that and more as your child is immersed in a musical environment which presents music as a joyful activity and as a natural part of everyday life rather than a formal art reserved only for the concert hall.
Click here for our handout on Stress management, Laughter, and Learning. As educators with decades of combined experiences, we've come to firmly believe that Kindermusik is the single best choice a parent can make for their young child through Age 7, and the leading experts in Early Childhood Development agree and are big fans of the Kindermusik curricula. We've seen the results of this 7-year program and are consistently amazed at the level of cognitive, emotional, social, physical, language, and musical growth the graduates display. It never ceases to amaze us. We thank you for the privilege of working with you and your children, and look forward to our remaining years together, and sharing the "amazement" with you!
AT HOME FUN THIS WEEK
1) Family Activity Book Week # 14 - "I am a Book-Maker! Page 17
- Speaking of Fun! Have you tried joke-telling to one another as you do your projects, or do you get focused on the end result only, and lose sight of the "fun" in the doing? Here's some jokes you can share!
- "What falls but never hurts itself?" A: Snow
- "What do you get when you cross a snowman and a shark?" A: Frostbite
- "What do snowmen eat for breakfast?" A: Ice Krispies
- This week you and your child are invited to make your own book as a memory of these weeks in Hello Weather. Book-making is a natural opportunity for your child to focus on and simultaneously exercise whole language skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. And, it might become a wonderful treasury of fun memories that your child will review time and time again.
REMINDER: Bring your books to sharing time at our Favorites Class!
2) Enjoy reviewing songs from your CD's as we prepare for your final FAVORITES CLASS next week!

Keeping the "P" for PLAY in "P"RACTICE
"You simply cannot study music and the arts without feeling joy, happiness, sorrow, humor, and so on, and when we allow these emotions to be a part of the learning process, our education becomes richer, more meaningful, longer lasting, and has greater impact in our lives."
- Good Music, Brighter Children, by Sharlene Habermeyer, p. 11.

Writing, Singing, Reading and Playing music is so much fun and great brain development for your little one. I want to remind you of the steps to take when children are learning to sing and play the glockenspiel so to keep play more "simple" and "rewarding."
- READ the music by SINGING while keeping MALLETS IN READY POSITION
- Remove the music, and then your child can SING & PLAY from memory.
It is appropriate at this time to have your child either READ & SING or SING & PLAY, so be sure to turn that music over so your child can concentrate on just SINGING & PLAYING when at the glockenspiel
In these past few weeks, the children have connected with each other in a special way through the study of music. We have gotten to know each and every child - with laughter, conversation, and friendship. the importance of your child "enjoying" their playtime (practice time) with both YOU and ME is critical to retained learning in all regions of brain development: cognitive, physical, social, emotional, language, and a lifelong love of music.
Experiencing music together has opened doorways to relationships as well as to developing skills in math and science, leadership, self-confidence and emotional independence this semester. I hope that you and your child are finding this first of our four semesters of Kindermusik for the Young Child to be a valuable one, and I look forward to Semester 2 as we have only just begun. Next year we will finish the preparation needed for your child's ultimate success in Private Instruction as well. We will begin the process of transferring learning to the keyboard next year, and by Spring next year we will guide you to instruction in either Piano, Violin, Voice or some combination of the three, as we offer all of the above in our Elite Artistry division.
We'll see you next week for FAVORITES class!!
HOME ACTIVITY SUGGESTIONS
1) Music At Home Card 15 "1 Heart a DAY"
- Reminder: Only "1 HEART a day (7 stickers plus 14 Drawn hearts possible) can be earned through SINGING and then PLAYING & SINGING on note names the next 3 weeks. The idea is to reinforce DAILY PLAY with your for small periods of time, vs. a couple long sessions. Repetition is far more beneficial than length of time. If you establish this ritual now - like brushing teeth - it is something that will last a lifetime and is also a practice that will make completing school homework and private studio instruction instrumental practice a success later.
- Preps for Parents:
- 1-2-Find this Melody (Sing one of the melody cards)
- 1-2-Sing with Me (Sing the melody card together)
- 1-2-Sing and Play (Turn Card Upside Down - then sing and play by MEMORY)
- Would you like to purchase a carry bag for your glockenspiel? We will be placing a group order. We will be taking orders at our next class in January. Here is some information on the glockenspiel carry bag
2) Have Your Child Write "c-a" Melodies (Use Chips or write on a 5-line staff)
- Write
- Sing w/ Mallets in Ready Position
- Sing and Play by memory
- One more idea: How about a jump on your FLOOR STAFF?
3) Continue Rhythm Play (Red Envelope - 8 cards) 3 WAYS TO PLAY
- 1-2 Clap & Read (Parent writes Rhythm for child)
- 1-2 Write this Rhythm (1-2 Check your Rhythm)
- Child creates rhythm for parent to Write

WOW - YOUR CHILD CAN LEARN CONCEPTS QUICKLY NOW!
Some of our class foci today were:
- Working with Mallet Crossing (translates to hand positions in piano)
- Three-Beat Meter and the Dotted Half-Note (3 beats)
- Leadership and Ensemble Skills: Team Drumming of your children's rhythms
- Ballet and Jazz dancing components
- Introduce Tap Dancing
- Learning a complete tap dance routine!
I wonder if only one year ago you could have imagined your child learning about tap dance and then learning a complete tap dance all in a few minutes? Amazing little brains you have been growing with your time spent here at Kindermusik!
This has been an exciting semester for us. Thank you for sharing your child with us and with all the other children. Each child brings a unique character and spirit to the classroom-without which the class would not feel complete! We look forward to your final semester of Kindermusik for the Young Child with this wonderful group of children, and the final preparations to transitioning the children to PRIVATE STUDIO piano/violin/voice instruction.
We wonder, will your child choose piano or violin or voice lessons, or perhaps some combination of the above? Our thoughts are that if your child isn't just dying to play the violin, then the piano has additional benefits that will allow your child to transition to any other instrument in the future: two-handedness, wider range (multiple clefs), etc. No matter what your child chooses, we have a fun and comprehensive Private Lesson curriculum customized for every child in our ELITE ARTISTRY private studio program.
HOME ACTIVITY SUGGESTIONS
1) Complete Home Activity #45 "The World of Dance - Ballet, Jazz, and Tap"
- Teach someone in your family one or two of the basic tap steps we learned: Toe Tap, Heel Tap, Shuffle.
- Enjoy tap dancing with the hand positions listed on your MAH45 card. FUN
2) How about sitting at a keyboard and "sounding out our mallet dance melody?"
- Encourage your child to play the piano (or keyboard) in your home, and "sound out" the Mallet Dance melody
- This is called "playing by ear."
3) Continue to listen to your Young Child 3 CD in preparation for our final FAVORITES CLASS next week! FUN!
