Looking Ahead to the 2014 Ontario Summer Theatre Season

Ontario Summer Theatre Spring has finally sprung as we reach the beginning of May, and with this change of weather comes the highly anticipated beginning of the summer theatre season.

We are lucky to have a wide ranging and dynamic summer theatre scene in the province of Ontario. Big venue, small space, outside, indoors, lakeside or travelling by bus, there's something for everyone and I'm excited to see what the 2014 summer season brings!

Remembering Anne Wilson

With much sadness, we share the news of the death of Anne Wilson of Woodstock.  Anne was "a card-carrying member" of Theatre Ontario from the beginning, a former chair of our Board of Directors, and a past recipient of the Michael Spence Award for Contribution to Community Theatre.

I had the pleasure of meeting Anne back in 1999 - I was Theatre Ontario Festival Stage Manager that year, she was the Stage Manager of Woodstock Little Theatre's acclaimed production of Orphans.  She and her team received an Adjudicator's Award for a memorable intermission transformation of the set that garnered tremendous applause when the curtains opened for the second act of the show.  Anne was one-of-a-kind.

Ontario Off Stage

In "Ontario Off Stage" on our blog, we curate theatre conversations and news from around the province and beyond.  Highlights from last month include:

From April 25
  • "There is just too much evidence that we are NOT living in a time of scarcity." - The need for more abundance thinking across the theatre ecosystem
  • The changing nature of theatre criticism
  • How this year's U.S. Pulitzer Prize for Drama was an example of artistic producing at its best
From April 11
  • "How Canadian theatre is killing itself - or how to really LOVE our audiences"
  • Models for an ensemble theatre company
  • Bored assumptions about Boards and fundraising
From April 4
  • Lessons learned about audiences while working at a theatre box office
  • 70% of GTA residents regularly participate in the arts by attending events, volunteering, or donating, according to a Toronto Arts Foundation study

Overcoming the "Starving Artist" Syndrome

Lisa Phillips As an artist you are super-talented at so many things, but there is a missing link. Something that causes that self-fulfilling prophecy to take over your thoughts and steer you away from success... Something that just hasn't clicked yet. So why is that? The reason is that there is something that you don't know...YET. There is something that your creative mentors and teachers failed to teach you about how to succeed financially in your artistic career.  Find out at Overcoming the "Starving Artist" Syndrome workshop with Lisa Phillips on May 21.
