From the President

Spring is almost here! Which means that the Spring Conference is right around the corner. Check out the MHVRP website for more details and to register for the conference and your hotel.

We did not have a large response to the Program Resource Exchange. Please take some time to review these volunteer roles, check off the volunteer programs that you have in your hospital, and send to Rachel.Jonaitis@mercyhealth.com. Click here to access the template.

Many of our members had the opportunity to attend the Healthcare Advocacy Day on Tuesday, March 17 in Lansing. Thank you for everyone that was able to attend as this shows a great partnership with MHA and MAHA. Colleen Sweeney was, of course, a huge hit and brought me back to focusing on the patient experience every day and every time. She reminded us of the importance of the first three seconds of an encounter and how this will determine a person's impression. It makes me re-evaluate my volunteers in our front lobby areas and the scripting, tone and eye-contact that we expect from them. We are always looking at ways to improve our patient experience and I am so thankful that our members of MHVRP are able to share their knowledge and their best practices with our organization.

Members who have not yet submitted information for the Program Resource Exchange should please do so with the link below. After information is complied, this document will be posted on our website.

Have You Completed Your Hours Report?

It's that time of year when MHVRP requests information from its membership on the number of volunteers, volunteer hours and the money raised by your Auxiliary or Guild. If you have not already provided Sarah with the above information, below is a link to the template. Email the completed information directly to Sarah at sknochel@chs-mi.com.

2014 MHVRP Hours Report

MHA Legislative Update

Gov. Rick Snyder's Fiscal Year 2016 executive budget recommendation proposed to eliminate all support for GME, totaling $163 million, and all funding for the small and rural hospital access pool ($36 million) and the obstetrics stabilization pool ($11.2 million). In response to the executive budget recommendation, the MHA issued two Advocacy Alerts that asked members to contact their local lawmakers and urge them to explain that the cuts proposed by the governor are unacceptable and have a direct, negative impact on patient care. The proposal for the budget cuts was challenged by the MHA and hospitals before two legislative committees, both the House and Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Community Health. Lawmakers heard why increasing hospital taxation is a complex, unfair and unsustainable solution; that the programs at risk provide access to millions of Michigan residents every day; and that the MHA and its member hospitals find the proposed healthcare cuts unacceptable. The MHA also continues to educate news media and social media audiences about the impact of the proposed cuts. For more information about the MHA's Advocacy efforts, such as bill tracking or a brief advocacy overview visit the MHA website

Google Groups-In Case You Missed It...

Below are just a few of the recent postings on Google Groups. If you are an MHVRP member and have not yet signed up for Google Groups, please contact Kristyn Ireland at Kireland@noch.org. Google Groups is a great resource for finding policies, procedures, job descriptions and so much more from your fellow MHVRP members. Looking at creating a new program, but want to know how other DVS's did it? Having issues with a program or volunteer and want advice? Need to create a position description? Don't start from scratch. Ask membership. It's highly likely another organization already has something you could edit to suit your organization's needs. Post the question on Google Groups and find out what our members have to say on the topic.

Have Something You Would Like to Share?
Members, if you have a volunteer program or topic that you would like me to share with the group as a feature in the newsletter, please do not hesitate to contact me. We all know how difficult it is to be out of the office to attend conferences and educational days. This will give us an opportunity to network and update each other on what's new or working well in our facilities.

Respectfully,

Shelly Weaver,
