Police and Fire Sharing Facilities:  

Like Oil and Water or Like Cookies and Milk?

 

Consolidating public services, such as fire and police, can result in savings to taxpayers and increased efficiency in emergency response.   Sounds simple - but it's not. Saving Energy - Saving Money

 

 

 

After five years of effort, Monroe Township Fire District #1 (NJ) is going forward with construction of a new fire station.  It will be a 16,700  sq ft  station on a 2.94 acre parcel.   The building is designed to be energy efficient and low maintenance. 

 

An innovative, high-efficiency, wood framing system for the office areas will result in R-values of 28.8 for he walls (instead of the 19 common in other buildings) and 38 for the ceiling.  The double deep four-bay apparatus bay is constructed with a high R-value double-wythe masonry wall system that results in a wall R-value of 19.4 (instead of the 12.6 common in other buildings).  The building has heat recovery ventilation and condensing boilers.   These energy-saving features will save the District money for the life of the building.  The skin of the building will be of non-corroding materials that will resist deterioration and will easily last more than 75 years.  

 

This approach to energy use and materials reflects our building design goals: to design & build efficient and durable facilities that serve the community and that save money for future generations. F.I.E.R.O. Fire Station Design Symposium
                         

We will be presenting once again at the FIERO Fire Station Symposium.  This year the Symposium will be held in Raleigh, North Carolina, from March 17-19.  The topic will be How to Create an Energy Efficient Fire Station.  Participants will learn what energy savings measures are the most cost effective for both new and existing stations,

 

Our presentation will cover: insulation, windows, air filtration, furnaces & boilers, heat recovery, ground source heat pumps, day-lighting, HVAC controls, impact of occupancy patterns, climate variances, and an explanation of energy modeling.
