New Jersey Projects in South River & Monroe Township
Our two new projects in New Jersey include a new fire station for South River in an area that was hard hit by Hurricane Sandy last year. The project was initially anticipated to start two years ago on a site that proved unacceptable to the neighbors. This led to a lengthy analysis of other sites and a close look at flood plain maps. The lucky outcome is that the newly selected site is better than the original location. Groundbreaking is anticipated for 2014. This story will soon be featured in an article and video in an upcoming issue of Fire Chief Magazine.
Monroe Township in New Jersey has also spent several years gearing up for their building project. They've worked to identify an appropriate site that avoids having to settle for additions and renovations to the current station, which is located on a very tight site and which fronts on a narrow street shared with many homes. The Department has been able to obtain a 3 acre site with frontage on three roads. This will allow them to have drive-through bays with generous aprons and room on the site for training and recreation. Groundbreaking for Monroe Township is expected in 2014.
Schoharie Fire Department
Plans for a new fire station in Schoharie, NY, are moving along. The facility will replace the Niagara Engine Company #6's fire station that received heavy damage during Hurricane Irene. The original building dates from the 1950's and was condemned and abandoned after being 8-feet under water. With FEMA support, the new station will be located out of the 500 year flood plan. Part of the project has been to build a temporary structure that will house the apparatus during site work and construction and then be re-purposed. Mitchell Associates has designed a new building that brings the facility up to modern codes and accommodates today's apparatus while complying with the zoning requirement that it be similar to the adjacent historic stone fort. This is a complex project that meets the needs of the Department while working within FEMA requirements and NYS guidelines for a historic overlay site that includes an archaeological study of Native American artifacts.
