May 2013

Greetings!

Spring is in the air, well sort of, not sure with the crazy weather we've been having.  Our staff survived another great year at NETA, where we got to visit with over 400 teacher, techs and administrators.  NETA is always a great chance for us to see everyone and to also share the latest and greatest tools for classrooms across the midwest.

The end of the year brings not only warm weather, but tons of activities as well.  Don't forget how your tech tools can be a life saver this time of year.  Whether you're looking to record a lesson using your IWB software, snapshot lessons done in class with your doc camera, or save time grading using your SRS, please let us know how we can best help you close out the year putting your tech tools to work for you.

Igniting Learning at NETA 2013

Bright orange safety vests, Minute To Win It games, and fun classroom signs all could be found in the Engaging Technologies booth at the NETA 2013 conference in La Vista, Nebraska, where a fun time was had by all!

The Belkin Stage seemed to be just the thing that people had been looking for to allow them to use an iPad as a document camera, and many were WOWed (and successful) at the ability to use GradeCam to grade 25 tests in under a minute. If you missed out on seeing these new technologies, make sure and contact us so we can WOW you too!

Livescribe Sky Pen: Archive Notebooks But No Pencast PDF

Livescribe announced recently that you can now archive notebooks with your Livescribe Sky wifi smartpen so that you can clear memory on your smartpen and use the same numbered notebooks again.

However, they made that announcement seeming to deliver some good news before delivering the bad. Although Livescribe had made it clear that it fully intended to develop Pencast PDF for the Livescribe Sky wifi pen, that seems not to be the case as noted in the the latest news direct from Livescribe.  The ability to create pencasts in the form of PDF files is of great benefit to schools that want to keep confidential information out of the cloud and in their own server space.  This can now only be done with Livescribe Desktop, which is used by both Livescribe Pulse or Echo smartpens.

The newest Livescribe model, the Sky wifi smartpen, uses Evernote, and it is now being suggested by Livescribe as the method by which to share pencasts as they evaluate other options.

Good news?  Well, not to us and not to many of our education customers.  We'll continue to keep you informed, but please don't shoot the messenger!  For now, we are still recommending the Echo smartpen and just recently received access to 4GB and 8GB smartpens available for a limited time (see pricing updates above)!

Mimio Gallery Tips
Spending more and more time customizing your Mimio Gallery?

Below are some tips that will help you find things quickly and with the least amount of work...
  • Create a new Gallery folder with your name that contains files you have uploaded.  Put an asterick in front of your name to make the folder go to the top of the folder list within the Gallery, making your folder easier to find.
  • If you add things to subject area folders rather than your named folder, add your first or last name to the name of the Object. This is simply a failsafe so that if you can't find the item you are looking for, you can search for your name and the choices you have to search through will be filtered down to only things you have added.

  • Make sure that each time you
import an object you take the time to name the object and to apply the appropriate properties and keywords to it. You can do this by right clicking on the object in the gallery and clicking Properties
The more keywords you add per item, the more effective your searching will be.

MIMIO -
Q:  How do I backup my Mimio Gallery that I have worked all year to customize with imported content packs, images and templates?

A:   If you've spent time importing templates and content and making your Mimio Gallery your own this year, you'll definitely want to make sure and back up your Gallery before summer.  After backing it up, make sure you place it on a flash drive or other external backup source that is in your possession, rather than on the same machine that your Mimio installation is on. This will ensure that you have your Gallery in your possession when IT staff takes your computer to do summer maintenance or ghosting.

Watch the video below to see just how easy backing up your Mimio Gallery can be.  However, the important part is that you take the time to complete it before you leave for the summer!

A:  To help you prep for the end of the school year, eInstruction has created some helpful Best Practices documents.  These will help you ensure you're are on the latest versions of eInstruction products, run through check lists for storing classroom technology over the summer months, and more.
