Memorial Day is primarily a day to honor and remember those who have died in service to our nation, but is also a day to remember all who have died.
This Monday, Memorial Day, May 26, at 10:30 am,
Seattle's Irish community is invited to remember at St. Patrick Cemetery in Kent at S 204th St & Orillia Rd. Fathers John Madigan and Tom Marti will concelebrate Mass, a Knights of Columbus Honor Guard will be present and a Bagpiper will play. Mass will be followed by a Wreath Laying Ceremony and the Playing of Taps.
Join us as we remember all Americans who have served their country, and especially those of Irish birth or extraction who are buried at St. Patrick Cemetery and elsewhere.
____________
ST. PATRICK CEMETERY
St. Patrick Cemetery is located on Orillia Rd at 204th Street in Kent, 1 mile east of the Orillia Rd exit off I-5 (Exit # 152), and east of Sea-Tac Airport. It is located in an area once called O'Brien that was settled in 1868 by brothers Morgan and Terrence O'Brien for whom the area was named. Both brothers were born in Co. Tipperary.
The small 4½ acre cemetery was founded in 1880 by Richard O'Connell from Co. Limerick who is pictured at left with his family. He set aside a small plot on his farm to be a cemetery for the Irish families in the area and many of the original Irish-born O'Brien pioneers were later buried there. The first burials at St. Patrick were in December 1880, those of Morgan O'Brien and his wife Catherine, a native of Co. Clare.
On file at the Seattle Public Library is a nine page tombstone inscription list from 1960 entitled: "St. Patricks Cemetery, O'Brien, Wash. (near Kent)." That complete listing of Tombstone Inscriptions can now be viewed online.

ST. PATRICK STATUE
Members of Seattle's Irish community are joining with members of the Knights of Columbus to raise funds to erect a statue of St. Patrick at St. Patrick Cemetery. The planned six foot tall granite statue on a 30 inch granite base is expected to cost about $18,000 and much of the money has already been raised, but more funding is required. If you can help, please make your tax-deductible donation payable to "St. Patrick Cemetery Statue Fund". Mail to: Getmsemane Cemetery, 37600 Pacific Highway S, Federal Way, WA 98003. Click St. Patrick Statue for more information or call 253-838-2240.
