SENIORS' LUNCHEON RE-SCHEDULED TO OCTOBER 5

Because of severe parking problems in downtown Kirkland this weekend, the Irish Seniors Lunch originally scheduled for tomorrow, Saturday, September 28, has been re-scheduled to Saturday, October 5. The re-scheduled luncheon will be at 12 noon at the Wilde Rover Irish Restaurant in Kirkland. All seniors and their guests are invited to attend, but please re-confirm your attendance or make a new reservation for the October 5 luncheon (with the names of guests) to 206-915-1878 or Seniors@irishclub.org.


SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, BOYS OF ST. COLUMB'S

At 7 pm tomorrow, Saturday, September 28, at the University of Washington in the WalkSt. Columb'ser-Ames Room in Kane Hall  (i.e., Kane Hall Rm. 225), Maurice Fitzpatrick will introduce his documentary film, 'The Boys of St Columb's. The film (and book of the same title) covers the story of St Columb's, the small Catholic high school in Derry, Northern Ireland, which, since free education was introduced in 1947, lists among its extraordinary roster of accomplished graduates the late Seamus Heaney (poet, playwright, and recipient of the 1995 Nobel Prize in Literature), John Hume (politician and recipient of the 1998 Nobel Peace Prize), Brian Friel (playwright, "Translations", etc.), Seamus Deane (poet, author, and Professor at the University of Notre Dame), Martin O'Neill (former Glasgow Celtic Soccer team manager), Bishop Edward Daly ("Bloody Sunday" in Derry in 1972), Lord Chief Justice of Northern Ireland Sir Declan Morgan, politicians and activists Mark Durkan, Francie Brolly, Raymond McCartney and Eamonn McCann, singer & songwriter Phil Coulter, etc. The documentary follows the lives of eight of the school's graduates to tell the story. Admission is free and on-campus parking on Saturday is also free.


MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, BRIAN FRIEL'S TRANSLATIONS

Maurice Fitzpatrick, who is a Lecturer in English at the University of Cologne, will speak at the University of Washington on "Nationhood and Statehood in Brian Friel's Translations". The talk is Monday, 30 September, from 3:30-4:30 pm in the Simpson Center for the Humanities (CMU 202). Light refreshments will be available following the talk. This event is free and open to the public.


NEXT MONTH'S EVENTS

FRIDAY-SUNDAY, OCTOBER 11-13

SIFF Film Center at the Seattle Center

 Now in its 16th year, the Irish Reels Film Festival kicks off on Friday night, October 11, at 6 pm at the SIFF Film Center at the Seattle Center (just south of the Seattle Repertory Theater, FREE parking) with an Opening Night Reception and screening of Steph Green's authentic, unconventional love story, Run and Jump, a recent winner of the Best First Irish Feature at the Galway Film Fleadh.

Then on Saturday, October 12 at 2 pm, there's a special family screening of Eliot & Me followed by a Short Film Program at 4 pm featuring new award winning live action and animated films. Saturday's feature presentation at 7 pm is Made in Belfast and Director Paul Kennedy will be present to introduce his feature debut.

Sunday afternoon, October 13, features Tapestry of Colours at 12:30 pm. It's an emotive feature length documentary that explores the fusion of cultures in Northern Ireland. That is followed at 3 pm by Silence, and the last film of the weekend at 7:30 pm is the documentary Men at Lunch, telling the story of "Lunch atop a Skyscraper," the iconic photograph taken during the construction of New York's 30 Rockefeller Plaza. WEEKENDS, OCTOBER 11 - NOVEMBER 3, IRISH PLAY

Sea Marks, an old-fashioned, sentimental play about a lonely, middle-aged Aran Islands fisherman who strikes up a pen-pal relationship with a similarly lonely Welsh woman, will be performed at Seattle's Freehold Theatre, 2222 2nd Ave in Belltown, starting Friday, October 11. MONDAY, OCTOBER 14, MATT TALBOT DINNER

The Matt Talbot Center and Seattle Seahawks Team Up to Restore Families at a Dinner and Auction on Monday, October 14, in the new Don James Center at UW Husky Football stadium. At the dinner, Seahawk's quarterback Russell Wilson will be presented the 2013 Shawn Alexander Community MVP Award. Meet members of the Seahawks and also support the programs of Seattle's downtown homeless program that is named for the Dublin saint. Tickets $175 at MTCenter.org.

OCEAN SHORES IRISH MUSIC FESTIVAL

This is the 10th year of the Galway Bay Irish Music Festival in Ocean Shores. Enjoy music and fun for four days starting the evening of Thursday, October 24 through Sunday, October 27. Headlining this year's festival are the Young Dubliners while also featuring Young Wolfe Tones, Molly's Revenge and Tillers Folly, and an eclectic mix of twenty-five (25) Irish bands, choirs and dance groups from across the US, Canada and Ireland. OPENING SATURDAY, OCTOBER 26, CHIHULY IRISH GLASS

Northwest glass artist Dale Chihuly opens an exhibition entitled Chihuly's Irish Cylinders on October 26, at the Museum of Glass in Tacoma. Created in 1975, the 44 minty and milky cylinders feature drawings from Chihuly collaborators that draw on quintessentially Irish emblems, topography and fiction, with specific focus on James Joyce's classic novel Ulysses. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 25, GAELIC MASS OF REMEMBRANCE

At 7:30 PM on Friday, October 25, a Mass of Remembrance in the Irish language will be celebrated at St. Patrick's Church, 2702 Broadway Ave E (just off I-5 at Roanoke St), Seattle. Mass booklets in English and Gaelic are made available to all in attendance. All hymns and readings are in Gaelic with only the Homily in English. This Mass commemorates the deceased members of Seattle's Irish community, especially those who have passed away in the past 12 months whose names will be read out during the Mass. SUNDAY, OCTOBER 27, IRISH NIGHT AT THE SOUNDERS

Irish Night at the Seattle Sounders is Sunday evening, October 27, for the game vs. the LA Galaxy whose star player is Robbie Keane, Irish international soccer team captain. This game is a sell-out with almost 60,000 tickets already sold. 300 Irish Night seats are reserved in the Hawk's Nest section in the north end zone of CenturyLink Field. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 30, SKARA BRAE CONCERT

At 7:30 pm on Wednesday October 30, Seattle's Ceol Cascadia Irish Music Association presents wonderful traditional Irish music with Skara Brae members Tríona and Maighréad Ní Domhnaill with Fiddler Dáithí Sproule, at the Phinney Neighborhood Center, 6532 Phinney Ave N. Singer, pianist, and composer Tríona Ní Domhnaill is considered to be one of the most influential female vocalists in the history of Irish music. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 6 - KEVIN BURKE CONCERT

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 9, IRISH GLASS EXHIBIT OPENS

Consul General of Ireland Philip Grant will join Ireland's best known glass artist and educator, Róisín de Buitléar, at the Museum of Glass in Tacoma on Saturday, November 9, 6-8 pm to help open a major Irish Glass Exhibit called CAUTION Fragile! - Irish Glass: Tradition in Transition.
