HEATHROW PREPARES FOR DISRUPTION AS EBOLA SCREENING STARTS

Ebola screening has begun at Heathrow Airport, with Gatwick Airport and Eurostar terminals following next week. Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt said passengers from at-risk countries will have their temperature taken, complete a risk questionnaire and have contact details recorded.

The Chief Medical Officer said the risk to the UK is low, but expects a 'handful' of cases.

Screening at Heathrow Terminal 1 has already begun before being extended to other terminals.

The Department of Health estimates that 85% of all arrivals to the UK from affected countries will come through Heathrow. Border Force officers will identify passengers to be screened. Nurses and consultants from Public Health England will carry out the testing. Passengers deemed at high-risk due to contact with Ebola patients, but with no symptoms, will be contacted daily by Public Health England.

'Highly visible information' will be in place at all entry points to the UK, Mr Hunt insisted.

A Heathrow spokesperson said: "The welfare of our passengers and colleagues is always our main priority and we are working with Government to support the implementation of the screening measures as announced by the Health Secretary today.

"We would like to reassure passengers that the Government assesses the risk of a traveller contracting Ebola to be low. We would encourage anybody with individual questions or concerns to refer to guidance from Public Health England and the Foreign Office."

QANTAS - NEW AUTOMATED PASSPORT CONTROL KIOSKS AT LOS ANGELES AIRPORT

Qantas has unveiled forty new Automated Passport control kiosks at Los Angeles International Airport.

These new kiosks will fasten the entry process for passengers arriving internationally into Los Angeles. Automated passport processing is available for U.S. and Canadian citizens arriving from abroad, as well as travellers from the 38 Visa Waiver Countries who are also registered with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection's Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) program, are eligible to use the new machines.

International travellers, including family groups will be able to submit their customs declaration form and biographic information electronically, reducing the time they spend with a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer.

International travellers can select from 13 languages to use. Easy-to-follow instructions guide the user through the process, which includes scanning your passport, taking a photograph using the kiosk, answering questions, and fingerprinting for non-U.S. citizens.

QANTAS NON STOP TO VANCOUVER

In January 2015, Qantas will operate six return flights from Sydney to Vancouver. With this offer, Qantas will take advantage of an increased demand during the northern hemisphere winter holiday season.

Qantas also unveiled a code-share alliance with Canadian airline WestJet, to offer passengers connections to Calgary and Edmonton. The six seasonal flights will operate between 03 January to 22 January 2015, departing Sydney on Wednesday and Saturday. Flights will depart Vancouver on Thursday and Sunday evenings.
ETIHAD AIRWAYS PARTNERS

Etihad Airways has launched a new brand called "Etihad Airways Partners", which will operate in a similar way to the three existing global airline alliances.

This partnership will incorporate six airlines including, Etihad, Air Berlin, Air Serbia, Air Seychelles, Jet Airways and Darwin Airline.

In the new partnership, Etihad says their goal is to focus on "strong commercial partnerships and shared values." The charter of the newly founded group is to simplify the experience for the passenger and offer customers more than route sharing opportunities. In its statement, Etihad emphasized the opportunity to create a better flying experience for customers.
VIRGIN AUSTRALIA ANNOUNCES MELBOURNE LOUNGE PREMIUM EXIT

Virgin Australia is pleased to announce that the Melbourne Lounge Premium Exit is now open.

Similar to Sydney's Premium Entry, Melbourne's Premium Exit offers lounge guests the ability to fast track to the gate with an exclusive security screening area that is linked directly from the lounge. The Premium Exit is open Monday to Friday, 45 minutes prior to Virgin Australia's first departure.

The Premium Exit gives lounge members access to two private screening lanes, connecting them seamlessly with a direct path to gates 1-10.

DEPARTURE eGATE TRIALS AT BRISBANE AIRPORT

At Brisbane International Airport, Australian Customs and Border Protection Service and the Department of Immigration and Border Protection are trialling eGates to work towards automating the departure process.

Travellers on board who selected Air New Zealand and Qantas international flights will be invited to use the trial eGates when departing Australia. The eGates work by scanning the traveller's passport and matching the passport image with the travellers live image at the eGate. If the two images match and the passenger passes other Immigration checks, the eGate will open and the passenger is allowed to exit.

According to the Minister for Immigration and Border Protection, eGates will be rolled out at each of Australia's eight major international airports from mid-2015.
