ONEWORLD, STAR ALLIANCE AND SKY TEAM: WHO IS SIGNING UP IN 2014?
Each of the three big airline alliances - Oneworld, Star Alliance and Sky Team - will welcome new members in 2014. These new members will give Business travellers more choice of connections, lounges and ways to earn and burn frequent flyer points.
OneworldOneworld alliance will gain three new members, giving Qantas an additional three partners for codeshare flights. On 31 March 2014 Brazil's TAM Airline and US Airways will be joining Oneworld Alliance. Shortly after, Sri Lankan Airlines will join the alliance. US Airways will improve connections to and along the US east coast due to its hubs in Washington, Philadelphia and in North Carolina. TAM Airline will join Chilean sibling LAN and LAN Colombia as Oneworld's South American members, making it easier for travellers to Brazil to tap into TAM's domestic and international network. Sri Lankan Airlines will be useful for Australians heading to India for work and is one of the best ways to get yourself to the relaxing resorts of Maldives. Sky Team Garuda Indonesia joined Sky Team this month. This is the seventh Sky Team airline in Australian skies alongside China Airlines, China Eastern, China Southern, Delta, Korean Air and Vietnam Airlines. Star AllianceAir India could officially join Star Alliance as early as June this year. This will be Air India's second shot at joining Star Alliance after the airline's previous application to join was suspended in July 2011.
