MISHE MISHE MISHE As our tradition teaches us "Mishenichnas Adar Marbin Besimcha" therefore, we would like to wish you a very happy Rosh Chodesh Adar with lots of joy. Students loved donning funny hats and dancing around the school and classrooms to celebrate Rosh Codesh and the joyful month ahead of us.
SEPHARDIGRAS This past Rosh Chodesh we were excited to celebrate Sephardi style. The chairs were uniquely arranged in a circular fashion and we invited Rabbi Masri and Rabbi Soussan to join us and lead the festivities. Students of Sephardi descent shared passionate stories including Tania and Joseph Blanga who spoke about their father from Lebanon, Avi Passy spoke about the Jews of Greece and their part in the Holocaust and Salvi Bentolila spoke about his mother's special Moroccan soup called Adafina. Students then enjoyed a delicious Sephardi style breakfast including Shakshuka that was generously underwritten by the Kleiman family in honor of Jacklyn's Bat Mitzvah.
RECHARGED In honor of the birthday of Alessandro Volta who invented the first battery, our 4th and 5th grade students created their own batteries in class with a little help from some vinegar and coins.
ALL SHAPES AND SIZES EC 15 students are working on their brush stroke techniques with water colors while incorporating shapes into their paintings, notably the triangle which is symbolic of Purim and Hamantashen which we all love to eat!
EMPOWERING THE FUTURE
11th and 12th grade students enjoyed a presentation from Rabbi Jeremy Stern who is the Executive Director of ORA, Organization for the Resolutation of Agunot. Rabbi Stern discussed the core issues of what a classical Agunah is, what it means for someone to be denied a get and the halakhic solutions that are available to resolve this issue and educate students about one day signing a Halakhic Prenup. HAMANTASHEN TREATS EC 3 students are eagerly learning about the story of Purim and created their own giant hamantashens on paper. First they outlined the shape of a large triangle and a smaller triangle inside of it, painted inside the larger triangle and then used tissue paper to create their favorite fillings!
PARTY TIME 4th graders celebrated the culmination of learning Parshat Vayeshev from the book of Bereishit with a siyum and enjoyed Israeli snacks such as Bissli and Crembo, the "winter ice cream" of Israel while acting out scenes from the Parsha.
HOT TOPIC The high School debate club were at it again discussing whether intelligent design had a space for instruction in education. This was a challenging topic for many, especially those that had to debate against what they truly believe but naturally this will only make them more skilled in debate.
WHAT LIES BENEATH THE SURFACE Elementary students enjoyed a feast for the senses while learning about the crust of the earth and tectonic plates. Teachers created clay models depicting layers of the earth and allowed students to create their own wearable models. Following instruction about the properties of these layers, a fun experiment was conducted to replicate molten lava and the tectonic plates with students using graham crackers and strawberry flavored icing. Naturally students could eat their delicious experiments when all was said and done. |
