MYSTERY READER
Kindergarten students were overwhelmed with excitement and anticipation as they welcome their Mystery Reader for the week, student Jordan Jaffe's mother in disguise. The class enjoyed her animated story telling of the book "Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs". We can't wait to see who will knock on the door next week.
HIGHER LEARNING
The Torah cafe program is well underway with students meeting on Wednesdays after school for in-depth discussions and study. Students are currently concluding the Story of Yonah and students delved into whether we have a choice in life, as Yonah was forced to do certain things even though he did not always want to do them.
MEET ME AT THE PLAYGROUND
The RMBA PTO generously underwrote the creation of an enclosed play area for our EC 15 and EC 2 classes filled with fun and age appropriate toys and activities selected by Principal Helene Lubel for our smallest students.
CITY ART
3rd grade students have been working on an exciting and challenging art project with art teacher Colleen Bryant. They carved a cityscape into a special printmaking foam to make their own custom "stamp". Then after painting a background of a sunset over the ocean, they inked and printed their cityscape onto their background to show the city and it's reflection in the water.
AIPAC CONFERENCE
A group of 9 high school students accompanied by Mrs. Gila Chen and Mr. Wadler attended the AIPAC Policy Conference held this past weekend in Dallas. The event attracts more than 10,000 community and student activists from all 50 states, and more than half of the Senate, a third of the House of Representatives and countless Israeli and American policymakers and thought leaders. AIPAC's aims are for us "to gain a deeper understanding of the complex issues facing our community, and to rededicate ourselves to involvement in pro-Israel politics." On the last day, the students had the unique opportunity to meet Alon Ben Gurion, the grandson of our first prime minister of Israel, David Ben Gurion. He spoke of the important legacy of his grandfather, especially the day his grandfather declared the establishment of the state of Israel.
GET INTO THE ZONE
EC4-K students enjoyed a fun crossover playdate with their Goldberg Montessori cohorts at The Zone while school was not in session this past Monday.
READY TO LEARN
Although the students were not in session on Monday, our teachers diligently participated in their professional development seminars. Our EC teachers enjoyed a city wide Jewish Day school course off campus while our elementary and upper school staff enjoyed some challenging presentations, discussions and creative collaborations.
THE ART OF LISTENING
Another popular installment of Lower School Principal Helene Lubel's Coffee and Conversation Program took place this week and we welcomed the return of Elyssa Fink, LCSW to lead a session discussion about effective listening skills to utilize as parents.
BAKER'S DELIGHT
As part of the ongoing Ulpan Maasi program where students experience life in Israel while practicing conversational Hebrew, elementary school students were transported to the famous Ma'afiyot Angel (Angel Bakery) where they worked together to bake delicious oogiyot (cookies) from scratch, then decorate their plates followed by creating advertisements in teams as to why their bakery was the best.
ROLLING MOTION
Lower School student's in Mrs. Patti Ross's class have been learning about Newton's Law of Inertia and to test the theory, they paired up and experimented by releasing two balls of varying mass and with a measuring wheel, determined which ball travelled a longer distance down the lower school hallways.
YOUNG LEADERS
This past weekend, Mrs. Levitt accompanied four RMBA teens to the Yachad National Leadership training conference in Stamford Conneticut. There the teens had many great sessions discussing leadership and learning how to advocate for special needs in our communities. It was a great and rewarding weekend and the Beren teens made lots of new friends from across the country who are also involved in Yachad, The National Jewish Counsel for Disabilities.
FALL IS UPON US
Now that the cooler weather is finally upon us, Mrs. Fowler's 1st and 2nd grade students helped clean up the garden in preparation for the fruits and vegetables that will be planted and studied.
YES, WE TEACH ROBOTICS!
In the Middle School Robotics class, students utilize LEGO EV3 kits to solve problems through engineering and programming. For this challenge, they built a small robot to maneuver through a tunnel and engage a pressure plate at the end. They had to program their robots to navigate autonomously by using infrared and/or touch sensors to sense walls and trigger programming to allow their robots to turn and follow the tunnel through multiple right angle turns.
SEARCHING FOR ANSWERS
Geverit Erlichman's 5th Grade class proudly adorned the wall outside their classroom with various challenging biblical quotes and questions the students had posed to one another written in both Hebrew and English.
EVERYDAY IS FUN
1st Grade students are alway using creative and engaging approaches with their Everyday Math curriculum in Mrs. Schneider's class.
EVERY VOTE COUNTS
While the rest country of voted on the Midterm elections on Tuesday, RMBA students participated in their own exciting elections...selecting the proposed design for the school spirit wear shirt! Students anonymously voted for one of three potential designs using our school IPads. We look forward to sharing the results with you all soon...

BEREN ACADEMY STARS
Basketball Season has started!!!
Several teams have already opened their season with some exciting games this past week.
High School Girls opened their season with a tough loss on Monday, but bounced back and got a much needed win in their TAPPS district opener on Tuesday. The girls are 1-1 overall (1-0 in district) as they prepare for two more tough games before the seniors leave for their Israel trip.
High School Boys opened their season with an impressive TAPPS district 9-2A opener against Briarwood. The boys, who are 1-0 on the year (1-0 in district) are also preparing for two more tough games before the seniors leave for their Israel trip.
Middle School Boys JV opened up on Tuesday with an impressive win against Grace. The JV boys are 1-0 on the season.
Middle School Boys Varsity opened up on Tuesday with a tough loss against Grace. The varsity boys are 0-1 on the season.
Middle School Basketball
Middle School Basketball has officially started. Here are a few reminders for all parents.
-
All girls MUST wear an undershirt under their jersey. This shirt must be the same color as the primary color of the uniform (Home games - white; Away games - Royal blue). Boys don't need to wear an undershirt, but if they choose to do so, the same rules apply.
-
All players (boys and girls) need to purchase a royal blue pair of shorts if they do not already have. The shorts need to be completely royal blue with no stripes down the side. They can be purchased at Academy for about $6.00.
-
Some schools will charge admission at their schools to watch the game (most will not charge). We do not charge admission at Beren for middle school games.
-
Transportation to and from away games are the parents responsibility. The middle school girls do not have any away games until January. Both boys teams play away for their first game next week.
-
There will be games in which the middle school players will need to leave their last class early to make it to the games on time. I will send out a list of what games those are and when you are able to pick them up from school.
-
A list of Away game locations is posted on the website.
-
Updated practice and game schedules can also be found on the school website and calendar.
-
Please use the Greenwillow gate for picking up students after games or practices.
-
If you have any questions, please e-mail me at chriscole@berenacademy.org.
