WEEKLY VIDEO FROM OUR HEAD OF SCHOOL |
The first 10 weeks of school may seem to have flown by but we have experienced and accomplished so much in that time.
Enjoy this slide show below capturing the ruach (spirit) of our school.
| RMBA presents a taste of the 2014/15 school year... |
|
We are delighted to welcome returning 11th grade student Daniel Morgen to Robert M. Beren Academy. Please join us in welcoming Daniel and his parents back into the RMBA family!
We currently have 298 students enrolled this year!

FLIPPING THE SWITCH
Judaics teacher Rabbi Ari Kellerman has introduced an innovative teaching model in some of his classes known as Flipped Learning. The concept requires students to review videos created by Rabbi Kellerman introducing them to the material prior to class, allowing for more in depth discussion and profound understanding during the class. IPad use is also heavily incorporated into this advanced learning experience. Check out this article about Rabbi Kellerman's class featured in the Jerusalem EdTech Solutions (JETS) Blog here.
ARK OF CREATION
Grade 2 students enjoyed a cross disciplinary unit where Rabbi Levitt researched the size of the Tevah (Ark) of Noach with the students and then used Math to calculate the measurements from cubits into feet (1.5:1 ratio) and then used the RMBA fields to measure it with yard sticks. Students also enjoyed enjoyed an Augmented Reality Tevat Noach puzzle where they pointed their IPads at a puzzle of the Tevah and the story came to life in 3D.
ANIMAL HOUSE
In honor of Rosh Chodesh and the Parsha of Noah, elementary school students could enjoy a special dress day and were encouraged to come as their favorite animals. We had plenty of cats, dogs, frogs and even spiders wandering our hallways with students embracing this fun and creative way to honor Torah.
LOOKING AHEAD
Our Juniors and Seniors have much to think about as they near the end of the Jewish Day School experience. College applications are being submitted while students ponder if spending a year studying in Israel is the right move. Based on a recent Alumni Survey conducted earlier this year, 75% of our graduates opt to spend a year in Israel following graduation. Our 11th and 12th grade students received an informative visit from Rav Shaul Feldman on behalf of Midreshet Torah V'Avodah and Yeshivat Torah V'Avodah.
TWINKLE TOES
We offer a variety of optional after care activities for our early childhood students to choose from. A highlight for many is ballet with young students enjoying their first foray into the world of dance.
THE FUTURE IS NOW
Our high school students received a visit from Rachel Shandalov and Matthew Schwartz on behalf of Yeshiva University Undergraduate Admissions to discuss the possible opportunities that lie ahead at their school. A YU parent reception was also generously hosted by the Gelman family this week to address parent's inquiries.
MIX IT UP
As part of our "No Place for Hate" Coalition, Upper School students participated in a Mix It Up program during lunch. Students played a game of 22 questions at tables where students had been randomly assigned moving out of their comfort zones and connecting with someone new or different.
SAVVY SHOPPERS
Our Men's Seminar students have been learning about Kashrut for a few weeks, but as the Talmud says, "Eino Domeh Shmiyah L'Re'iyah - Hearing about something is nothing compared to seeing it." Walking the supermarket aisles and going into the kitchens at Randalls with the HKA representative really brought to life many of the issues the students had been studying. It helped them appreciate the practical applications of Kashrut and the reasons behind the mitzva. Afterwards, students were treated to delicious burgers and just hung out.
BEGINNING OF BEAUTY
The theme for last week in many of our early childhood classes has been learning about creation. Students have been learning about the different stages of creation and EC two students enjoyed making colorful butterflies to symbolize the creation of the earth and all the animals.
ISRAEL HERE WE COME!
Our seniors are buzzing with excitement as they prepare to embark on their Senior trip to Israel for 2 weeks. Meetings are being held to discuss the goals and logistics of the trip that will be led by Rabbi Aharoni Carmel and Elisheva Levitt.
MAINLY THEATER EC4 and Kindergarten students were treated to a field trip to Main Street Theater this week to enjoy a hilarious performance of Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse. SHABBAT SHALOM HEY!
Our weekly early childhood Oneg Shabbat celebrations have officially begun. We invite parents and family to attend this fun celebration which includes stories, singing and dancing every week followed by Shabbat celebrations in the individual classrooms.

BEREN ACADEMY STARS
Middle School Basketball
Middle School Basketball will start playing games next week. Here are a few reminders for all parents.
- All girls MUST wear an undershirt under their jersey. This shirt must be the same color as the primary color of the uniform (Home games - white; Away games - Royal blue). Boys don't need to wear an undershirt, but if they choose to do so, the same rules apply.
- All players (boys and girls) need to purchase a royal blue pair of shorts if they do not already have. The shorts need to be completely royal blue with no stripes down the side. They can be purchased at Academy for about $6.00.
- Some schools will charge admission at their schools to watch the game (most will not charge). We do not charge admission at Beren for middle school games.
- Transportation to and from away games are the parents responsibility. The middle school girls do not have any away games until January. Both boys teams play away for their first game next week.
- There will be games in which the middle school players will need to leave their last class early to make it to the games on time. I will send out a list of what games those are and when you are able to pick them up from school.
- A list of Away game locations will be posted on the website this week and emailed to each of you.
- Updated practice and game schedules will be sent out this week and can also be found on the school website and calendar.
- The gate code is 233# for anyone picking up their child from basketball practice or games. Please use the Greenwillow gate.
