ETSY FOR ANIMALS - WE ARE THE CHARITY OF THE MONTH

Etsy for Animals (EFA) aka Artists Helping Animals, is a team of independent artists, craftspeople, vintage sellers on Etsy.com who are dedicated to providing charitable relief to animals by donating a portion of the profits from their shops to an animal charity of their choosing, and/or to EFA's featured Charity of the Month.

We are very grateful to ETSY for choosing us to be Etsy's Charity of the Month.

MAYOR DEBLASIO RETURNS FROM ITALY THIS WEEK
cannot be soon enough
Before he left for a vacation in Italy, Mayor deBlasio reaffirmed his commitment to ban the horse-drawn carriage trade. So far he has done nothing. This is not good. We hope he begins to act quickly when he returns.

This is my Open Letter to Mayor deBlasio, published a few weeks ago. Please read it if you have not. We do not want anymore empty words. We want action.

PLEASE CALL THE CITY COUNCIL
about banning the horse-drawn carriage trade (no e-mails or faxes)
It is almost August and we are no closer to shutting down the inhumane and unsafe carriage trade than we were one year ago. All we have are empty promises. Please contact your council member and ask him or her to support a bill to ban horse-drawn carriages. CALL THEM. Do not e-mail or fax. These methods of communication are likely to be deleted. Calls have much more impact and are less likely to be forgotten.
  • NYC RESIDENTS: www.council.nyc.gov -- Call your Council Member.
  • OUTSIDE NYC: Call Speaker Melissa Mark Viverito's office. 212-828-9800

What should you say? Introduce yourself and say that you are a constituent and tell them your address. Then ask them if you can be connected to someone who deals with legislation. You may get someone else or you may continue talking to the person who answered the phone. Tell them that you want the Council Member to support a ban on horse-drawn carriages -- not a phase out - but an unconditional ban -- and you would like to know his/her position on this issue. If they ask why, which they probably will not -- tell them it is both a public safety issue and it is inhumane. Depending on the answer, you may have to follow up. Do not expect that they will call you back.

We need to move this campaign. PLEASE TAKE THIS ACTION. IT SHOULD NOT TAKE LONGER THAN 5 MINUTES. WE ARE DEPENDING ON YOU.

Thank you to those of you who have already done this. Please report back to us -- coalition@banhdc.org.

REVIEW OF NY DAILY NEWS "CAMPAIGN"
sleazy tabloid secures spot in the history books
The Daily News has never supported Bill deBlasio. They endorsed Christine Quinn for mayor thinking that their endorsement carried weight. Wrong! Quinn came in a distant third. I recall almost every day another article trashing deBlasio would appear in this rag. Even before deBlasio won the primary, one of their reporters reported the outrageous lie that if banned, all the horses would go to slaughter. Starting sometime in April, the Daily News began their crusade to annihilate the campaign to ban horse-drawn carriages. Unfortunately, with all their lies, they have done a pretty good job. These are some reminders.

MORT ZUCKERMAN, OWNER OF DAILY NEWS, AXES 17
something is definitely wrong with this picture.
The NY Post recently reported that 17 people lost their jobs at the Daily News, including an award winning photographer who was at the World Trade Center on 9/11. Star Photographer Axed as Daily News Purge Continues.

This begs the question - why Mort Zuckerman is rallying to save the status quo of 220* carriage drivers when he cares nothing for his own long time employees. Notice I say "status quo" and not jobs. Jobs will be offered to these drivers. My take on this is that it never had anything to do with saving the horses or their jobs but everything to do with winning this fight against Mayor deBlasio - getting him to cry uncle and giving up on his commitment - then getting him to look like a flip flopper, which can easily be used against him in the next election -- by both sides. David Handschu/photographer: "My co-workers who are the most dedicated of creative spirits who are living in an insane asylum." *220 is the number of licenses issued by the Department of Consumer Affairs. It is not 300 and it is certainly not 1,000 as the media would like you to believe.

WE CONTINUE TO ADVERTISE IN METRO + CITY & STATE
please donate what you can for our advertising campaign
We will continue to run ads in Metro as long as we can. We signed up with City & State for a few months. Please help us to continue by making a donation. You may donate here. Please remember we are all volunteer and do not take salaries. Every penny you donate is put back into the organization. We are the organization that began the "ban" campaign in 2006 and we plan to continue our ad campaign until this inhumane, unsafe and abusive trade is stopped. We are hoping Mayor deBlasio takes positive action soon. Thanks to all of you who have donated to our campaign. It is much appreciated. We cannot do it without your help.

This is the ad we are running in City & State. Please read the accompanying article "It's a Safety Issue."
