WHERE'S CHRIS?
ASPCA's response is inadequate!
Chris, the carriage horse who was involved in an accident on September 26th, has not been seen working since that date. Probably because of all of you who reached out to the ASPCA, they decided to issue a statement about Chris. This is an excerpt with the most important information:

Thank you so much for contacting the ASPCA. We always encourage open dialogue and the thoughtful exchange of ideas, and I appreciate you sharing your concerns about Chris, a New York City carriage horse. Here are the facts as we know them:

  • On September 26, ASPCA agents, the NYPD and FDNY responded to a carriage horse incident in Manhattan. Agents suspended the horse, named Chris, from work pending a veterinary exam.
  • An equine veterinarian subsequently examined Chris and ordered three days of rest and recuperation before he could be returned to work.
  • The NYPD investigated the incident and found that the driver had not committed any legal infractions.
  • We understand that Chris did not return to work and was relocated to Pennsylvania on September 30.

We want to know exactly what "relocated" means. The ASPCA has no jurisdiction over the "farms" outside of NYC. The furlough locations are not subject to inspection by any City agency or the ASPCA and the Department of Health does not have a list of these locations.

The ASPCA statement above is worthless and does not tell us anything. The ASPCA is giving up humane law enforcement by the end of the year and this is an opportunity for them to do the right thing and find out where Chris is and let the public know. NY Class has previously said that they and the ASPCA, their "partner," will find homes for all the horses. Well - let them put their money where their mouth is and provide one for Chris. We tried but were turned down. Please write to Stacy Wolf - stacyw@aspca.org - she is the Sr. VP of Humane Law Enforcement. If your e-mail bounces, there is nothing I can do about it. They will change them if they do not want to be contacted. I have already written to her but have not received a response. Thank you.

REAL HORSELESS CARRIAGES FOR NYC?
New article in DNAinfo by Amy Sacks
High-Tech Carriage Company Imagines Industry Without Horses Writer Amy Sacks reports on a company in Michigan that has perfected converting horse carriages to battery operated ones without horses. This is a viable alternative to horse carriages in NYC. It would keep the same business model; the same number of carriages and assure the drivers' jobs.

The comments on the site, however, indicate the owners are not interested and will fight to the end to keep their unpopular, outdated, inhumane and unsafe business. This is link to Andres Carriage Tours LLC.

IS THIS THE END OF HORSE CARRIAGES IN NYC?
One Green Planet article by Alexis Croswell
10/11/13 - Is this the End of Horse Carriages in NYC? Horse carriages have long been used to add the feeling of "romance" to a city, but they also have been under the scrutiny of animal lovers who don't see a crowded city as the right place for a horse, among other issues. We're happy to report that the future of NYC carriage horses is looking good. Bill De Blasio, the democratic candidate for mayor in NYC, stated the banning of carriages horses " - will not be my first act, but it'll be something I'll do right away - I believe that the existence of the horse-carriage industry in this city is no longer appropriate. I don't think it's fair to animals. I don't think it's something necessary for this city. I think there is a good viable alternative, which is to have replica antique cars with electric motors that are clean and will provide tourists with a good experience and will provide the same people who now have horse carriages with an employment opportunity. So I do care deeply about making sure there are jobs for working people. They'll just be different and they'll be more humane." We like that answer. De Blasio's GOP rival, Joe Lhota, told a radio host months ago that, he too, would eliminate the $15 million carriage industry - but not because of animal cruelty. "The smell that they drop there is unfortunate," he said on the AM 970 radio station last spring.

It's good news for the horses in New York this election season, and we hope the politicians follow through on their promises. We've featured articles on the issue of carriage horses extensively over the years, so here's a quick recap of the issue at large: A Horse of a Different Color - "In the age before the automobile, horses were notoriously overworked, and many died in the streets. In NYC, they pulled wagons loaded with people and goods, and they served as the power for the City's street trolley system. Between 100,000 and 200,000 horses lived in the city at the turn of the century." This article provides an excellent breakdown of the life in a day of a carriage horse along with more information about the business itself. Where do all the NYC Carriage Horses Go? - Breaks down the myths and facts about what happens to a carriage horse once it can no longer prove "helpful" to its owner. NYC Fails its Carriage Horses - Reports on the death of carriage horse Charlie, and the public's reaction to the event in 2011. NYC Carriage Horses Never Have Happy Holidays - Adds some perspective to the carriage marketing gimmick of a romantic holiday stroll with horses. NYC Carriage Horses Don't Get What They Really Need - Analyzes a ruling at the time to give horses "vacation" time when what they truly need is to be free from captivity in the city.

MY COMMENT ON FACEBOOK IN RESPONSE TO THIS ARTICLE
As the author of the five other articles listed and president of the Coalition to Ban Horse-Drawn Carriages, I have been following this issue for many, many years. Bill deBlasio knows that the electric cars are a myth. They do not exist and are too expensive to produce - @$200,000 a pop - we are talking over $13,000,000. Please think logistics. Phase out is not something that is even possible. There are other alternatives like battery operated horse carriages - sans horses - that are a fraction of the cost and very doable -- it would be the very same business model and would assure that everyone keep their job. However, this is all assuming that the driver/owners are willing to cooperate. Otherwise there is no need for an alternative. Bottom line is that a ban of this inhumane and unsafe trade should NEVER be dependent on the success of a private industry. NEVER!
