WHERE'S CHRIS?
NYC carriage horse not seen been since accident on September 26th
Chris, the carriage horse who was involved in an accident on September 26th, has not been seen working since that date. The Department of Health was not able to provide any information on his whereabouts. The ASPCA said they could not furnish any information. The Coalition to Ban Horse-Drawn Carriages contacted a representative of the horse and carriage association and offered to take him. Once a horse like this spooks on the street, there is a chance he will do it again. It would be foolish for the owner to put him back on the street and risk another accident. As Assemblymember Linda Rosenthal said - they dodged a bullet this time - but next time, they may not.

I was told that I was "positively delusional" and that they would never "consider any real interaction with me regarding any of their horses." We do know that in 2010 when Shamrock Stable was closed because the building in which they housed their horses was sold by the City to a private developer, driver Ian McKeever refused help from NY Class and the ASPCA to help place his horses. There was about five or six who were sent to a "farm." To this day, only one is still on the registry. We do not know what happened to the others.

The ASPCA is giving up humane law enforcement as of December 31st. Until then, they should reveal what they know about the horse. Please contact the president, Mathew Bershadker at mbershadker@aspca.org - with a cc to Stacy Wolf , head of Humane Law Enforcement at stacyw@aspca.org. Ask them to make an official announcement about Chris telling us where he is, if a veterinarian examined Chris and what the report revealed.

CARRIAGE HORSE DIES IN NEW HOPE, PA.
while pulling carriage with tourists
Horse dies as it pulls carriage through New Hope A draft horse died Friday night as it pulled a carriage through the streets of New Hope, said police. Bett, a Percheron that weighed between 1,400 and 1,500 pounds, was taking two adult visitors up West Mechanic Street when she collapsed near New Street, said Sgt. John Goss. "This is an absolute tragedy. We all mourn the loss of such a beautiful spirit," said Wendy McCook, owner of Bucks County Carriages, where Bett, and her daughter, Betty, worked. McCook said she believes the 16.2-hand-tall horse had a seizure and died quickly. "It was just terrible." Bett was 13 years old, said McCook. Percherons can live to be 30 years old. The horse was removed by a company that handles large animals. Goss said Mechanic Street was closed for about 90 minutes.

So let's have some real reporting here. What was the cause of death?

KARMA
what goes around comes around
The carriage owners are complaining about losing their jobs if (when) a ban goes through. But instead of thinking constructively about what they will do, they are demonizing all of us who have worked on this issue for the horses -- including Mayoral candidate Bill deBlasio. However, DID YOU KNOW that in the fall of 2005 - just a few months before we started our organization - they introduced a bill into the City Council to BAN PEDICABS. Thankfully it failed. They did not like the competition and thought they could use their connections at City Hall to kill this growing industry.

When that bill went nowhere they introduced another that would have relegated the pedicabs to below 34th street to make sure they had no business. It sounds like a good dose of karma coming back to them. Unlike the horses who are enslaved to pull carriages, pedicab drivers choose to do this kind of work. They are not hurting anyone.
