Jane Velez 2 We are proud to announce that Jane Velez-Mitchell will once again be our honored guest at the Coalition's fund raiser to speak out for the carriage horses. Jane has been a very strong supporter of a ban on horse-drawn carriages, having addressed this issue several times on her TV news show Issues with Jane Velez-Mitchell on HLN.

Our fund raiser will be held at:

  • Fontana's - 105 Eldridge St, Manhattan, NY 10002
  • WHEN: Monday night - September 9, 2013
  • TIME: 6:30pm to 9:30pm
  • We chose September 9th because it is the night before the all important mayoral primary and will also serve as a Get Out the Vote Rally for Bill deBlasio for Mayor. (this is Jane Velez-Mitchell at one of our previous fund raisers.)

    HIGHLIGHTING SINGER/SONGWRITER BRIAN GARI
who will perform at our fund raiser
brian at demo We are thrilled to welcome singer/songwriter BRIAN GARI who will perform at our fund raiser. Brian was expected to perform at our April 2012 fund raiser, but shortly before he was hospitalized to have emergency open heart surgery.

Brian will sing his signature song Horse of a Different Color about the Central Park horses. Brian wrote all the songs for the Broadway musical Late Nite Comic and has recorded 12 albums. As a record producer, he has worked on albums by Neil Sedaka & the Beach Boys. He has had his songs recorded by everyone from Margaret Whiting to Lesley Gore. He has authored three books, including his latest "Close Encounters of the Celebrity Kind."

Brian is also a terrific, relentless and loyal activist - always at the anti-carriage horse demos and the Defeat Christine Quinn demos. He is pictured here at one of our demos.

    ... AND HARRIS BLOOM
    our tireless MC
harris bloom HARRIS BLOOM is an accountant by day and a comedian/writer by night. And if that is not enough, he is also an animal advocate who runs his own NYC based rescue - Stewie to the Rescue - 24/7. He has helped numerous animal rescue groups. He was honored by NY 1 as New Yorker of the Week. Harris tells us that he is married to a very pregnant wife, already has a 2.5 year old daughter and a dog. And that "He will sleep when he's dead."

Harris has hosted our last two fund raising parties and we so appreciate the time he has given to this issue. There is a definite resemblance to Stanley Tucci.

DEBLASIO LEADS IN ONE POLL; TIES FOR LEAD IN ANOTHER
PLEASE take action - see below
Debad We ran our first deBlasio ad on Wednesday, August 13th. Coincidentally, it was the day the latest Quinnipiac poll came out showing Bill deBlasio in the lead with 30%, followed by Christine Quinn with and Bill Thompson -several points behind. A few days later a Daily News poll showed deBlasio and Quinn tied for first place. This is all great news and shows that deBlasio's campaign is gaining traction.

    WHAT YOU CAN DO:

    • Volunteer for Bill deBlasio - contact Kicy at kicy@billdeblasio.com or go directly to Bill deBlasio for Mayor web site
    • Anti Quinn Voter Outreach - For Defeat Christine Quinn's and Anybody but Quinn's listing of voter outreach - click here.

HORSE PULLING CARRIAGE COLLAPSES IN SALT LAKE CITY
salt lake city A horse pulling a carriage collapsed in Salt Lake City on Saturday, August 17th. The cause was said to be colic. It was 98 degrees. Click here for the article. As usual, the owners and their friends are defending the "industry." It is time for urban carriage horse businesses to be shut down.
