A LITTLE HISTORY ABOUT THE HORSE-DRAWN CARRIAGE BAN
We started the Coalition to Ban Horse-Drawn Carriages in January 2006 in response to a horrific accident in which a carriage horse named Spotty was killed on W. 50th and 9th Avenue. The campaign to regulate or ban the horse-drawn carriage trade had been dormant since the mid 1990s. However in the fall of 2005, in response to stiff competition from the growing pedicab industry, the carriage owners got together and introduced a bill into the city council - pushed by Tom McMahon, lobbyist, friend to the carriage owners and husband of Deputy Mayor Linda Gibbs - to ban the pedicab industry. Some of the council members dropped off the bill when they learned more about it. The carriage owners and their friends probably thought it was the time to disable their competition since there was as yet no organized opposition to the horse-drawn carriage trade.
In late 2005 another bill was introduced, which also did not go anywhere. This would have kept the pedicabs below 30th St. - away from the tourists essentially killing their business. Speaker Quinn masterminded these bills. It is interesting now that the carriage drivers are crying foul since so many people want to get rid of the horse-drawn carriage trade on the grounds it is inhumane and dangerous. The pedicab industry has never been involved with our campaign. They have sat this one out. What goes around comes around. A taste of their own medicine - but this time - from us and it's for ethical reasons - not greed. It's Karma!
