NYC'S ALL IMPORTANT MAYORAL ELECTION
PLEASE take action - see below
carriage drivers' salute This newsletter reaches people all over the globe - not just New York City. Most of you have heard of Anthony Weiner's latest problems. From a nice lead in the polls, he is now trailing behind Christine Quinn. There are other candidates in the race such as Bill deBlasio and Bill Thompson who are being ignored by the media WHY!!! I fault this ignorance on two things:

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

  • Volunteer for Bill deBlasio - contact Kicy at [email protected] or go directly to Bill deBlasio for Mayor web site
  • Attend this very important meeting and see what you can do to make sure Quinn does not become our next mayor: Anybody but Quinn.
  • Voter Outreach - flyering at subway stops - Just show up: Monday July 29th - 5-7pm 116th St. & Lexington Ave. subway station #6 train (outside) AND Wednesday July 31st - 5-8pm at 181st St. St. Nicholas subway station #1 train. (outside) E-mail Danielle at [email protected]

WE ENDORSE BILL DEBLASIO FOR MAYOR OF NYC
see Alec Baldwin's piece supporting deBlasio in Huffington Post
Bill deBlasio The Coalition for NYC Animals, Inc. aka Coalition to Ban Horse-Drawn Carriages is proud to endorse Bill deBlasio for mayor of New York City. Bill has told us personally and with integrity that he will shut down the inhumane, abusive and cruel carriage horse trade. He gets it about animal issues, which is much more than we can say about any of the other candidates. Bill has a long career in politics - having been in the City Council for two terms and as Public Advocate since 2009.

Please read this piece by Alec Baldwin in Huffington Post - The Right Candidate for New York Mayor [Bill deBlasio] - 7/25/13. This is another good article about de Blasio. Forget Weiner: There's a real progressive for NYC Mayor - by Joan Walsh in Salon - 7/26/13.

MONEY MAKES THE WORLD GO ROUND
Please donate for deBlasio for Mayor ads
Our anti horse-drawn carriage advertising campaign continues thanks to all of you very generous and kind people who want to be part of history and to help ban horse-drawn carriages in NYC. It is so appreciated. Last week we said our pot was full and our advertising campaign will continue through August and September. We are totally volunteer and do not take any money for salaries - it all goes back into the organization.

HOWEVER - this is our new plea. We would like to raise some funds to do advertising for Bill deBlasio's campaign for mayor - much like our carriage horse ads. If you would like to donate to this - and please give what you can - go to our donation page and indicate that it is for Bill deBlasio. The smallest size - but still OK - is $375 per ad.

WHAT'S NEW WITH THE NYC CARRIAGE HORSE TRADE
Horses out in super hot weather & drivers gives the finger when asked about water
nyc driver giving the finger Horse-drawn carriages are not supposed to operate when it turns 90 degrees. But the law dictates that it is only the ASPCA officers who can determine what the temperature is by using a special thermometer at a certain place on the hack line. They are the only entity allowed to make suspensions. There is nothing in the regulations that provides for how a suspension is lifted. For many days these past few weeks it was more than 90 degrees and the drivers did not work. Last Sunday July 21st, an activist was walking through Central Park and saw a horse-drawn carriage - # 1128. He noticed it was 92 degrees on the CNN thermometer in the area. He was on the phone with someone who verified the same temperature from another source. He called the ASPCA only to be put on hold and eventually gave up after 10 minutes. He later saw the ASPCA car in the park but does not know what happened. He also saw many other carriages working. My take is that the drivers decided they wanted to go out and did not care what the temperature was. And they say they love their horses?!

The picture attached here was taken from Carriage Horse Cruelty's Facebook page. They said "One of our supporters saw a horse working in the heat of the night last night. It was in the high 80's and she merely asked the driver if the horse has access to any water. This is the response she got. Yes, these are Mayor Bloomberg's ambassadors for our city."

It was actually picked up by a Facebook page run by a woman who has a carriage horse livery in Louisiana. She said " Would you want to take a carriage ride with this driver? According to an anti-carriage page, this was the response the driver gave to a simple question regarding the horse's access to water while working in NYC at night while the temps were sill in the high 80s. Nothing says, "Welcome to NYC!" like giving someone the finger in response to a simple question. BTW - In NYC, there are 2 working water troughs in the vicinity of Central Park, but NONE in Times Square or other places where the carriages are allowed to travel at certain times at night. In Atlanta, there are NO troughs and NO public sources of water for the horses on the streets there."
