EQUINE ADVOCATES' CONFERENCE AGAINST HORSE SLAUGHTER
Support the Safeguard American Food Exports Act (SAFE Act)
Nelson Equine Advocates held the "2013 Annual American Equine Summit Unites Against Horse Slaughter" in Chatham, NY on Saturday and Sunday, April 27th and 28th. This is a run down of the schedule and participants. People like John Holland, president of the Equine Welfare Alliance, is just one of the leaders of this movement who came to speak. Paula Bacon, former mayor of Kaufman, Texas, also spoke. She was instrumental in closing the horse slaughter plant in Kaufman in 2007.

The resounding message that came out of the summit was to get the SAFE Act - S. 541 and H.R. 1094 passed and signed into law. This bill would prohibit the sale or transport of equines or equine parts in interstate or foreign commerce for purposes of human consumption. Scroll down the Kaurmanzoning.net page to Federal Legislation to learn more about this important bill. Contact your legislators and ask them to support it. bully 3 Although I am not an anti horse slaughter expert, I do know something about the carriage trade and why it should be shut down in NYC. This is also an issue that Susan Wagner, EA's president, strongly supports. I was invited to speak about the carriage horse issue and the Avella/Rosenthal state bill that would prohibit the operation of horse-drawn carriages in NYC. My talk was received with much support and enthusiasm. However, when the carriage trade and their supporters learned that I was on the program, they went CRAZY.

Always bullies, the carriage trolls and their pals sent nasty, bullying e-mails to Equine Advocates, made comments on EA's Facebook page demanding equal time and insulting me. They put out a call on the Internet asking people to pressure Equine Advocates. When they were ignored, they escalated their fight by calling the publicists, board members and speakers. One of them walked into the veterinary office of one of the speakers in New Jersey and demanded she do something about me speaking at this conference. This Summit was a meeting of people who are opposed to slaughter - leaders in the field. It was not a place for a commercial enterprise that exploits horses. Nowhere on the Facebook pages of the groups that were involved in this disgusting behavior is there any talk of the horrors of horse slaughter and what can be done about it. There is nothing on these Facebook pages asking their supporters to contact their representatives about the SAFE Act. Even if I were not speaking, they would have absolutely NOTHING to offer such a conference.

This is a group of bullies who has gotten their way in the past by sheer aggressive, bullying behavior. In 2008, they had our fund raiser shut down by bullying the restaurant owner who canceled one week before.
