IS THIS ANYWAY TO TREAT HORSES?
No - not if you care about them
feeding carrots Cute picture -- little girl feeding a carrot to a NYC carriage horse? See below why this is very dangerous. A typical response from the carriage trade when they are confronted with criticism is to say that the person making those comments doesn't know anything about horses and they have no right to an opinion. Don't fall for it. Although there are many people who are horse experts, including rescuers, horse owners and veterinarians who want to see the NYC horse carriage trade shut down, it is not necessary to be a "horse expert" to have an opinion about this inhumane and unsafe business. After all - slavery was abolished in the US because of the movement started with the Abolitionists who knew it was morally wrong but did not have any personal experience with this vile business.

That said - these are two videos to see this week. The first was taken very recently on 10th Avenue on the way to Central Park. The traffic is typical. This is what the horses have to go through every day. Is this anyway to treat a horse? Click here.

The second - click here - is taken at the hack line and shows the concierge from the Ritz Carlton Hotel with a little girl allowing her to feed carrots to the carriage horses. This is both dangerous to the horse and to the child. There are proper ways to feed carrots to a horse and this is definitely not one of them. The driver is not interacting with the child and is on a cell phone. It is dangerous to feed a horse a whole carrot with green carrot tops. It is too big and the horse can choke on the carrot and the greens. The horse is also wearing a bit. Anita Gerami from Chateau Stables comments correctly on the site :

  • Anita Gerami - I agree with cheshirecatalys62,treats are best fed in small pieces to horses, especially w/ bits in their mouths, better safe than sorry. [horse-carriage owner]
  • Karen Keirstead - This is such a sweet video. Stop knit-picking.[horse-carriage supporter]
  • Heather Clemenceau 1 year ago They should instruct the children to let the horse take small bites, especially since they have a bit in their mouth. Yes, choking is a concern when horses are fed whole carrots.
  • Anita Gerami - really the carrots should be broken in half to prevent choking.

So let's add this to our growing list of bad horsemanship/driving skills - allowing their horse to be unattended and untethered creating an opportunity for the horse to spook and bolt; pulling the horse by the bit - a common practice when the driver is trying to "park" the horse; leaving the carriage before customers dismount; ignoring how people feed carrots to their horse; dangerously standing up in the box seat throwing their center of gravity off; not paying attention to the road - turning around, being distracted while driving - using cell phones, reading publications, turning around to take pictures while driving; throwing feed for their horses on the dirty streets covered with pigeon feces, glass, and garbage; making illegal u-turns.

WHAT'S NEW IN THE NYC MAYORAL RACE?
This week the NY Times ran an article very critical of Speak Christine Quinn who is the front runner in the race. It told of her temper but also her disrespect for others and her vindictiveness in punishing other Council Members by holding back funds from their project to help children and seniors. Click here. If you have time, please read the comments that follow.

Quinn has been trying to spin it by calling those who criticize her as sexist - that if a man displayed this behavior, he would be seen as strong. Some people are buying it. It is just another overused case of identity politics. When former Congressman Anthony Weiner ran into difficulties because of inappropriate photos he tweeted, the NY Times wrote about his disagreeable personality and how his colleagues did not support him because of that. NY1 TV - Road to City Hall discussed this issue on March 26th with the "Wise Guys" - former governor Elliot Spitzer, former Senator Al D'Amato and former Public Advocate Betsy Gottbaum. Click here for video - and listen to what they all have to say - particularly Al D'Amato.

BILL TO BAN HORSE-DRAWN CARRIAGES IN NYS LEGISLATURE
Please make calls - Bill Numbers: S667 and A997 + Sign the petition
carriage horse in traffic The only bill to support in the campaign to ban horse-drawn carriages in NYC is the Avella/Rosenthal bill in the State Legislature. It is a pure ban. There are no strings attached. This is a link to a petition we have on change. org. Please sign it if you have not done so already.

You can read the legislation by clicking on the bill numbers, S667 and A997 . Text in CAPS is new. Text with a strike through is deleted.

PLEASE CALL MEMBERS OF CITIES COMMITTEE
to support S667 and A997 - The horses need your help!
The horses need your help. The best way to lobby your representative is to meet in person. If anyone wants to do that, please contact us at coalition@banhdc.org. The next best thing is a snail mail letter. Please see our newsletter from last week for the names of all the Cities Committee members and the links to their pages. Then comes phone calls. They are effective also. The telephone list is divided into Senate and Assembly - please make as many phone calls as you can. All you have to say is: My name is ______ and I live in ______ (borough or other city if not New York.) I am calling in support of S667 (or A997 if you are calling an Assemblymember.) I would like to know if Senator ______ (or Assemblymember _______ ) will sponsor this bill, which would prohibit the operation of horse-drawn carriages in New York City. Please get back to me on this issue. I will call back in a few days if I do not hear from you. " You should leave your e-mail , telephone number and/or address. If you live outside of New York City or state, please call anyway. This issue has resonated around the world and the carriage trade is frequented by tourists. If they ask for any information and they generally do not - and if you are not able to provide it - tell them you will get back to them and then contact us - coalition@banhdc.org. Please note changes in BOLD.
